Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1988, is a guide to understand and implement the USMARC Format for Holdings and Locations with the goal of making resource sharing of serials easier. Innovative librarians on the cutting edge of technical services and automation offer information on the development of the format, the significant impact it has already had on libraries, as well as discussions about how difficult issues of interpretation have been handled. The contributors to this invaluable volume draw upon their first hand experience with the use of the format, the NISO standards, and the SISAC code to provide other professionals with an introduction to the format and information on how other institutions approached the application of the format to their particular situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the uses of data within a changing knowledge infrastructure, offering analysis and case studies from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. “Big Data” is on the covers of Science, Nature, the Economist, and Wired magazines, on the front pages of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. But despite the media hyperbole, as Christine Borgman points out in this examination of data and scholarly research, having the right data is usually better than having more data; little data can be just as valuable as big data. In many cases, there are no data—because relevant data don't exist, cannot be found, or are not available. Moreover, data sharing is difficult, incentives to do so are minimal, and data practices vary widely across disciplines. Borgman, an often-cited authority on scholarly communication, argues that data have no value or meaning in isolation; they exist within a knowledge infrastructure—an ecology of people, practices, technologies, institutions, material objects, and relationships. After laying out the premises of her investigation—six “provocations” meant to inspire discussion about the uses of data in scholarship—Borgman offers case studies of data practices in the sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities, and then considers the implications of her findings for scholarly practice and research policy. To manage and exploit data over the long term, Borgman argues, requires massive investment in knowledge infrastructures; at stake is the future of scholarship.

Book excerpt: Let the Author's Handbook of Styles for Life Science Journals save you time and trouble by providing a one-stop resource for all your manuscript writing requirements. No more plowing through your journal collection or wandering the library stacks to get those elusive journal pages containing instructions to authors. This unique book contains all the information you need to know: whether the journal will consider your manuscript; the journal's submission address; how to construct the abstract, illustrations, tables, and references; and specific information on copyright, multiple authorship, statistical analyses, and page charges. The Author's Handbook of Styles for Life Science Journals gives all this information for 440 of the most important English-language, life science journals. Titles were selected from the "Journal Rankings by Times Cited" list in the Science Citation Index Journal Citation Report. Because this report is heavily weighted toward the medical sciences, other life science journals are incorporated into the book based on general level of prestige and reputation. In addition, some new titles that promise to be important to their fields, like Nature Medicine and Emerging Infectious Diseases are also included. Organized by journal title, the handbook's entries are uniformly arranged to allow direct comparison between journals. Information is presented in an easy-to-use, easy-to-read format with clear and explicitly stated instructions. The Author's Handbook of Styles for Life Science Journals gives authors in the life sciences all the information necessary for the correct and complete compilation of a manuscript for submission to their journal of choice.
