Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a revised version of a doctoral dissertation submitted to the University of Sheffield in 1990, places John the Baptist within his first-century Jewish context by exploring his public roles and activities as a baptizer and a prophet as they would have been understood within the sociohistorical context of Second Temple Judaism. After surveying the relevant traditions concerning John the Baptist (in particular, Josephus, canonical Gospels, and extracanonical sources), the volume turns to the use of ablutions and immersions in the Hebrew Bible, in Second Temple Jewish literature, and especially in the Qumran literature. In light of this context, several functions of John's baptism are proposed both in continuity with his context and in distinction from it. Then, Webb explores John's role as a prophet in two respects. First, after surveying the expectation of eschatological figures of judgment and restoration in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Jewish literature, John's own proclamation of a coming one is understood as describing Yahweh's coming to judge and restore, but through an unspecified human agent. Second, in light of the varieties of prophetic figures in the Second Temple period, John is best understood as a popular prophet who uses the symbolic event of the people's baptism in the Jordan River and their return home to symbolize not only their entrance into the true remnant Israel but also their entrance into the Promised Land. When this symbolic activity is placed alongside John's prophetic critique of Herod Antipas and of Herod's marriage, the social and political implications of this critique become evident. The symbolic activity and strong critique led to the Baptist's death under Herod Antipas.

Book excerpt: Why should you read this book? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him [PBUH]) was the most influential, revolutionary human being - past, present, or future. If you fully emulate his actions and inspiring examples, it could provide a way out of the challenges you face and allow you to lead a life of even more peace and happiness. What differentiates this book from others in its genre? Most books on his life are like history texts, which have appealed to inquisitive readers. This book, "Prophet Muhammad," reads like a story. This narrative aims to be one of the most engaging ways to access, appreciate, and understand his life. It is not intended to cover all details but rather focuses on many of the compelling episodes of his true story. Are there any reputable scholars who influenced this writing? In the first version of this book, Sheikh Omar Suleiman's review helped to strengthen the writing. The lectures of Sheikh Yasir Qadhi positively influenced the second iteration of this book to strengthen many key chapters, and have referenced him as a source throughout. He in turn used the most authentic sources (see below). In this third and current iteration of the book, Sheikh Mohamed Yousef Jendy provided extensive edits to ensure this true, non-fiction story of the Last Messenger (PBUH) resonates for this generation and for future generations. Sheikh Mohamed Yousef Jendy is an Azhari scholar and an Imam in Egypt. What sources did this book draw from? This book is based on the most authentic sources, including the Quran, tafsir, sahih hadiths, and seerah. Who is the author? Al Arqam is the author's pen name. He is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley. At the time of this writing, Al Arqam is a professional working for a mega cap tech company. He has lived in the United States as well as in the Middle East. How are the proceeds of this book used? As a non-profit effort, all of the proceeds of this book are used for charitable and educational purposes.

Book excerpt: "Throughout the history of the Israelite kingdoms there were prophets who prophesied nothing but favorable consequences for the actions of their political leaders. Opposing them were prophets who drew a distinction between the will of Yahweh for his people and the opportunistic aims of the monarchs. In the Micaiah narratives of I Kings 22 are seen two early stages in the development of this ideological conflict. Simon John De Vries examines thoroughly these early stages in order to find and understand the root causes of the conflict that led finally to national ruin."--Back cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey Stackert addresses two of the oldest and most persistent problems in biblical studies: the relationship between prophecy and law in the Hebrew Bible and the utility of the Documentary Hypothesis for understanding Israelite religion. These topics have in many ways dominated pentateuchal studies and the investigation of Israelite religion since the nineteenth century, culminating in Julius Wellhausen's influential Prolegomena to the History of Ancient Israel. Setting his inquiry against this backdrop while drawing on and extending recent developments in pentateuchal theory, Stackert tackles the subject through an investigation of the different presentations of Mosaic prophecy in the four Torah sources. His book shows that these texts contain a rich and longstanding debate over prophecy, its relation to law, and its place in Israelite religion. With this argument, A Prophet Like Moses demonstrates a new role for the Documentary Hypothesis in discussions of Israelite religion. It also provides an opportunity for critical reflection on the history of the field of biblical studies. Stackert concludes with an argument for the importance of situating biblical studies and the study of ancient Israelite religion within the larger field of religious studies rather than treating them solely or even primarily as theological disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most important innovators of the century, Tariq Ramadan is a leading Muslim scholar, with a large following especially among young European and American Muslims. Now, in his first book written for a wide audience, he offers a marvelous biography of the Prophet Muhammad, one that highlights the spiritual and ethical teachings of one of the most influential figures in human history. In the Footsteps of the Prophet is a fresh and perceptive look at Muhammad, capturing a life that was often eventful, gripping, and highly charged. Ramadan provides both an intimate portrait of a man who was shy, kind, but determined, as well as a dramatic chronicle of a leader who launched a great religion and inspired a vast empire. More important, Ramadan presents the main events of the Prophet's life in a way that highlights his spiritual and ethical teachings. The book underscores the significance of the Prophet's example for some of today's most controversial issues, such as the treatment of the poor, the role of women, Islamic criminal punishments, war, racism, and relations with other religions. Selecting those facts and stories from which we can draw a profound and vivid spiritual picture, the author asks how can the Prophet's life remain -- or become again -- an example, a model, and an inspiration? And how can Muslims move from formalism -- a fixation on ritual -- toward a committed spiritual and social presence? In this thoughtful and engaging biography, Ramadan offers Muslims a new understanding of Muhammad's life and he introduces non-Muslims not just to the story of the Prophet, but to the spiritual and ethical riches of Islam.

Book excerpt: Still in its infancy because of the overly conservative views and methods assumed by the majority of scholars working in it since the mid-19th century, the field of early Islamic and quranic studies is one in which the very basic questions must nowadays be addressed with decision. Accordingly, this book tries to resituate the Qur'ān at the crossroads of the conversations of old, to which its parabiblical narratives witness, and explores how Muhammad’s image – which was apparently modelled after that of the anonymous prophet repeatedly alluded to in the Qur'ān – originally matched that of other prophets and/or charismatic figures distinctive in the late-antique sectarian milieu out of which Islam gradually emerged. Moreover, it contends that the Quranic Noah narratives provide a first-hand window into the making of Muhammad as an eschatological prophet and further examines their form, content, purpose, and sources as a means of deciphering the scribal and intertextual nature of the Qur'ān as well as the Jewish-Christian background of the messianic controversy that gave birth to the new Arab religion. The previously neglected view that Muhammad was once tentatively thought of as a new Messiah challenges our common understanding of Islam’s origins.

Book excerpt: Daily Life and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) He was the highest example for humanity. He was the eminence of humanity in morals and habits. He presented humanity's best course of action in every sphere of life. From childhood to youth, youth to prophethood, and from prophethood to death, every moment of his life is worthy of imitation and obedience. Looking at every corner of his life, he is a shining example of truth, trust, honesty, loyalty, and piety. The world knows him as the last Messenger of Allah, Muhammad Mustafa (peace be upon him). Allah Almighty has sent the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as an exemplary model and has instructed people to be themselves according to this model in every field of life, in every era, in every situation, and in worship, affairs, society, and habits as well as try to convince others to follow his example. This verse, "Indeed, there is a good example for you in the Messenger of Allah." That's what it means. As if the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, his biography and blessed habits are a practical Quran. Islam is a comprehensive religion, and the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) teachings and his life are a complete example, shedding light on every aspect of human life and providing us with guidance and solution to all the problems that human beings may face in their lives. Therefore, for humanity to flourish and prosper in the future and progress, it is inevitable to follow Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a paradigm for a perfect human being. This book is written with all the above facts to provide a comprehensive collection of the Prophet’s daily life, habits, traits, dealings, and affairs. It sheds light on the Prophet (peace be upon him) as a father, brother, husband, and friend. It also tells us how the Prophet (peace be upon him) was as a trader, merchant, statesman, ruler, and politician. I hope this book will provide better insight into the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and inspire people to follow in his footsteps in every aspect of life.

Book excerpt: This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Prinslo’s introduction to and concise commentary on Psalms. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.
