Book excerpt: High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Composites provides an up-to-date comprehensive coverage of the mechanical behavior of ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures. Topics include both short-term behavior (strength, fracture toughness and R-curve behavior) and long-term behavior (creep, creep-fatigue, delayed failure and lifetime). Emphasis is on a review of fundamentals and on the mechanics and mechanisms underlying properties. This is the first time that complete information of elevated temperature behavior of ceramic composites has ever been compacted together in a single volume. Of particular importance is that each chapter, written by internationally recognized experts, includes a substantial review component enabling the new material to be put in proper perspective. Shanti Nair is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Karl Jakus is Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Book excerpt: The process for making an in-situ whisker reinforced glass-ceramic that is up to 1.5 times as strong as conventional glass-ceramics was developed at Virginia Tech and patented in 1993. This technology has been identified as having commercial potential for use in high temperature heat exchanger applications for the electric power generation field by the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT). This technology was licensed by MATVA, Inc., a small Virginia business, for further development. In particular, the goal of this project was to develop a property database and conduct initial testing of heat exchanger prototypes to demonstrate its potential application. This final report describes how the glass precursor was formed, physical properties of the glass-ceramic, techniques for making heat exchanger prototypes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this program are to characterize the interfacial region in a variety of whisker and coated fiber reinforced glass ceramic matrix composites, and to study how the structure, chemistry, and bonding characteristics of the interface influence composite properties such as strength, toughness, and environmental and thermal stability. During the past year, efforts in the whisker composite area were focused on the investigation of whisker coatings such as carbon and BN on LAS glass ceramic matrix composite properties, fabrication and characterization of calcium aluminosicicate (CAS) matrix/SiC whisker composites, high resolution TEM studies of a variety of techniques, and the evaluation of SiC platelets as an alternate reinforcement to whiskers. Efforts in the coated fiber area were focused on the evaluation of yttria and BN coated NICALON fibers from General Atomics. Results of these studies are presented. Keywords: Ceramic composite interfaces, Whisker reinforced glass ceramics, LAS matrix SiC whisker composites, Coated fiber, Glass ceramic composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the development of ceramics toughened with whiskers, particles or platelets are reviewed with emphasis on the development of both fracture strength and toughness. In the systems described here, the primary focus is on toughening attained by crack bridging processes (e.g., frictional bridging and pullout) in the wake of the crack tip. Examples of the influence of resultant improvements in other mechanical properties (e.g., strength, fatigue, and thermal shock resistance) are also given for whisker-reinforced aluminas. It is shown that similar increases in fracture toughness may also be brought about by the incorporation of platelet phases in ceramics, either by their addition or by their formation during densification. In addition, the development of ceramic matrix composites containing transformable tetragonal zirconia grains is discussed. Here, it is shown that both the zirconia grain size and content, combined with thermal expansion mismatch stresses, influence the transformability of the zirconia and the resultant transformation toughening effects. Examples reveal that by addressing the microstructural characteristics, as well as the reinforcement and matrix properties, high strength toughened ceramics with exceptional damage resistance can be developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whisker reinforced ceramic matrix composites have received a great deal of attention for applications as high temperature structural materials in, for example, advanced heat engines and high temperature energy conversion systems. For these applications, where mechanical reliability is critical, the improvements that can be realized in fracture stress and fracture toughness by the addition of whiskers to polycrystalline ceramics are of great interest. The primary role of the whisker reinforcement is to prevent catastrophic brittle failure by activating mechanisms that dissipate energy during crack propagation. Relevant toughening mechanisms include whisker bridging, whisker pullout, crack deflection, and microcrack formation.

To this end, high-strength single-crystal whiskers of silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sapphire have been incorporated into the matrices of barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate ceramics. Results to date indicate that a whisker reinforced ceramic can be fabricated without destroying its piezoelectric or dielectric properties. Although the activity of the whiskered material is somewhat lower than that of comparable pure ceramic, indications are that further developmental work will eradicate this deficiency. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of engineering-designed polymer matrix composites in the late 1940s has provided an impetus for the emergence of sophisticated ceramic matrix composites. The development of CMCs is a promising means of achieving lightweight, structural materials combining high temperature strength with improved fracture toughness, damage tolerance and thermal shock resistance. Considerable research effort is being expended in the optimisation of ceramic matrix composite systems, with particular emphasis being placed on the establishment of reliable and cost-effective fabrication procedures. Ceramic matrix composites consists of a collection of chapters reviewing and describing the latest advances, challenges and future trends in the microstructure and property relationship of five areas of CMCs. Part one focuses on fibre, whisker and particulate-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, part two explores graded and layered ceramics, while the five chapters in part three cover nanostructured CMCs in some detail. Refractory and speciality ceramic composites are looked at in part four, with chapters on magnesia-spinel composite refractory materials, thermal shock of CMCs and superplastic CMCs. Finally, part four is dedicated to non-oxide ceramic composites. Ceramic matrix composites is a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the interdependence of processing, microstructure, properties and performance of each of the five categories of CMC, with chapters from experienced and established researchers. It will be essential for researchers and engineers in the field of ceramics and more widely, in the field of inorganic materials. Looks at the latest advances, challenges and future trends Compiled by experienced and established researchers in the field Essential for researchers and engineers
