Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This text deals with the interaction between intensive laser radiation and clouds and will be helpful in implementing specific laser systems operating in the real atmosphere. The fundamentals of nonlinear statistical optics of aerodisperse media are addressed for the first time in this volume. Scientists and engineers interested in the problems of laser radiation propagation in the atmosphere, as well as postgraduates and senior students specializing in nonlinear optics, laser physics, and quantum electronics, will find the expert research contained within these pages valuable.
Book Synopsis High-Power Laser Radiation in Atmospheric Aerosols by : V.E. Zuev
Download or read book High-Power Laser Radiation in Atmospheric Aerosols written by V.E. Zuev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique properties of laser radiation including its monochromatic properties, polarization, high spectral intensity, coherence, narrow beam divergence, the possibility of controlling the pulse duration and radiation spectrum and, finally, the fact that extremely high power and energy create very favorable conditions for the extensive application of lasers to communi cation systems, systems for the lidar sensing and ultra-high-precision ranging, navigation, remote monitoring of the environment, and many other systems operating in the atmosphere. The operative efficiency of the above systems depends significantly on the state of the atmosphere and the corresponding behavior of laser radia tion propagating through it. This circumstance has stimulated the studies of the above regularities during the passt 10-15 years. For the investiga tions to be carried out the scientists were forced to develop new theories and methods for studying the problem experimentally. Moreover, during such investigations some previously unknown phenomena were observed, among them the nonlinear effects accompanying high-power laser radiation propagating through the atmosphere are of paramount importance. Among the nonlinear effects caused by high-power laser radiation inter action with the atmosphere, the effects accompanying the propagation of high-power radiation through the atmospheric aerosols are of particular interest. Aerosols always occur in the atmosphere. It should be noted that the microphysical and optical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols vary widely, this fact causes a great variety in the features of their inter action with radiation.
Book Synopsis Directed Energy Weapons by : Bahman Zohuri
Download or read book Directed Energy Weapons written by Bahman Zohuri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves deeply into the real-world technologies behind the ‘directed energy weapons’ that many believe exist only within the confines of science fiction. On the contrary, directed energy weapons such as high energy lasers are very real, and this book provides a crash course in all the physical and mathematical concepts that make these weapons a reality. Written to serve both scientists researching the physical phenomena of laser effects, as well as engineers focusing on practical applications, the author provides worked examples demonstrating issues such as how to solve for heat diffusion equation for different boundary and initial conditions. Several sections are devoted to reviewing and dealing with solutions of diffusion equations utilizing the aid of the integral transform techniques. Ultimately this book examines the state-of-the-art in currently available high energy laser technologies, and suggests future directions for accelerating practical applications in the field.“br>/div
Book Synopsis High Energy Laser (Hel) by : Bahman Zohuri
Download or read book High Energy Laser (Hel) written by Bahman Zohuri and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-22 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.

Book Synopsis Systems for Study of Propagation of CO2 Laser Radiations Through Clouds by : P. F. Browne
Download or read book Systems for Study of Propagation of CO2 Laser Radiations Through Clouds written by P. F. Browne and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the design, and progress toward the construction, of systems required for the study of the propagation of 10.6 micrometers radiation from CO2 lasers (both high power pulsed and cw) through clouds, both laboratory generated and natural. The laboratory experiments of highest priority are the study of non-linear attenuation of high power TEA laser pulses (of order 10 J/sq. cm.) through optically thick clouds produced by adiabatic expansion with particular attention to change of pulse shape, and measurements of backscatter. The systems required for these experiments are nearing completion. The field experiments are the study of attenuation, beam quality and backscatter of TEA laser pulses and cw radiation over a return path of the order of 1 km. The systems required are under construction. All lasers and also the transmissometer have been developed within the group. (Author).
Book Synopsis Time Delay and Pulse Stretching Calculations for Laser Radiation Propagation in Clouds by :
Download or read book Time Delay and Pulse Stretching Calculations for Laser Radiation Propagation in Clouds written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer study was conducted to determine the effects of multiple scattering on the time delay and stretching of a laser pulse propagating within a cloudy atmosphere. An effort was made to model the experimental setup and 'cloud conditions that existed during Project CLIPS conducted by Sandia Laboratories on Hawaii Island in the Fall of 1978. The scattering and extinction coefficients and the angular scattering distributions were calculated for several cloud conditions using measured cloud aerosol size distributions furnished by Light scattering, Pulse stretching, Clouds, Mie scattering.

This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces optical wave propagation in the irregular turbulent atmosphere and the relations to laser beam and LIDAR applications for both optical communication and imaging. It examines atmosphere fundamentals, structure, and content. It explains specific situations occurring in the irregular atmosphere and for specific natural phenomena that affect optical ray and laser beam propagation. It emphasizes how to use LIDAR to investigate atmospheric phenomena and predict primary parameters of the irregular turbulent atmosphere and suggests what kinds of optical devices to operate in different atmospheric situations to minimize the deleterious effects of natural atmospheric phenomena.
