Book excerpt: This book complements and extends the author's Writing Arabic and Pronouncing Arabic 1, and completes an introductory trilogy on the Arabic language. The learner, faced with a seemingly boundless variety of living Arabic speech, stands in need of a generalized framework within which to listen and respond. Pronouncing Arabic 2 answers this need. Mitchell familiarizes the reader with regional and stylistic variation in colloquial speech outside the strict confines of Classical and so-called Modern Standard Arabic, and provides a uniquely comprehensive survey of the "accents" of various representative vernaculars. He gives authoritative guidance to consonants, vowels, accentuation, and intonation, paying special attention to Moroccan, Cyrenaican Bedouin, Egyptian, Palestinian, Syrian, Jordanian, Iraqi, and Kuwaiti Arabic. A special feature of the book is his analysis of the pervasive interweave of vernacular Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic known increasingly as Educated Spoken Arabic, by means of which the educated speaker avoids sounding, on the one hand, illiterate or outlandish, and, on the other, bookish and pedantic. Pronouncing Arabic 2 will be invaluable not only to students and teachers of Arabic but also to linguists and phoneticians with a special interest in the language.

As a reference book, it provides friendly theme-based vocabulary lists to perfect pronunciation through both listening and repetition. As an activity book, it helps absorb and practise vocabulary through a variety of engaging exercises. Each of the units in the book is divided into two sections with the first section suitable for early beginners, and the second section for late beginners or early intermediate students. Each section presents key vocabulary followed by a wide range of activities. This book assumes a reasonable knowledge of the Arabic script and basic grammar, and is intended for beginners and early intermediate students to back up learning elsewhere. Vocabulary acquisition and pronunciation are both important but sometimes tricky aspects of learning Arabic, and this book aims to help overcome this.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook of writing and pronunciation is the fruit of several years’ teaching the Arabic language at the United Nations Office in Geneva and interaction with students from fifty different countries, i.e. from different religions cultures, and linguistic origins. It is the collection of lessons prepared to reply specifically to the immediate needs of each student, taking especially into consideration his or her language of origin. The Arabic alphabet contains several letters and sounds which do not exist in other languages. Learners differentiate between them with difficulty and often confuse them. Among the languages which use the Arabic alphabet, there are several letters which are written and pronounced differently, as in Persian, Urdu or Pashto. This is why, whatever the language of origin of the learner, I insist on good handwriting and good pronunciation from the very beginning. In these languages, there are also words of Arabic origin, but they have different meanings. This is also true for other languages which do not use the Arabic alphabet but which are influenced by Islam, such as Malay and Wolof, or by Arab-Islamic civilisation, such as Maltese and Spanish. To know a language is to know the mentality, the way of thinking and of expressing himself, the customs, and the life style of the person who speaks that language. It is never possible to know and understand a people without knowing its language; through studying the language, you can identify with the people and even come to love them. This book is not a treatise on comparative linguistics. However, instead of dealing only with the languages which use the Arabic alphabet, I refer to other languages, since I find that there are common features which every student of Arabic must know, whatever his language of origin, whether or not it uses the Arabic alphabet.

Book excerpt: If you are intending to start your journey of learning Modern Standard Arabic or still stuck in some stages without mastering both Arabic script and pronunciation, then this book is the key to unlock the doors towards the next stages. As English speaker, whether you are native or not, you will be amazed how English and Arabic overlap in a wide area in terms of sounds, and you will be impressed how regular the Arabic spelling is, which will make the process of learning pronunciation -at least at the level of recognition- very straightforward. Knowing that recognition is part of ultimate learning, this book will cover the common area of sounds between English and Arabic using the Arabic letters and International Phonetic Alphabet when no English equivalent is available. As for those sounds that are not in English, articulation strategies and techniques are clearly illustrated and precisely explained. At the End of this book, you will find both recognition and acquisition exercises, for you to practice what you have learned along the way. The goal of this book is to make you a Romanization-free Arabic learner, which will give the freedom to look up any Arabic text out there.

This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contrastive analysis of Arabs’ errors in English pronunciation regarding segmentals—consonants, consonant clusters, and vowels—and suprasegmentals—main word stress. It also explains the main interlingual reasons behind these errors, and presents some teaching suggestions for surmounting them. The findings show that the subjects substitute their own Arabic sounds for unfamiliar English ones, producing incorrect English sounds. In addition, they apply Arabic main word stress rules instead of English ones, producing incorrect English stress patterns. The book also shows that English sounds and stress patterns that are both different and more marked than corresponding Arabic ones caused learning difficulties for the subjects.
