All Dahlia wanted was her freedom, but first, she needed to buy out of her promised bonding, a promise that was made for her before she was even born. Almost a century of trying had taken its toll, and she’d done things she wasn’t proud of. Lost parts of herself along the way and flirted with the darkness inside her. And it flirted back. She told herself it would all be worth it in the end, but before she won that battle, everything in her life systematically blew up in her face—one piece at a time. Blaming it all on the beautiful, egotistical vampire who showed up in her life would be easy, but it started long before he arrived. With his help, she might succeed, but Dahlia wasn’t sure she could trust an outsider—not even one sent by Lucifer himself. Dahlia was standing on the brink of having everything she’d ever dreamed of, but she also risked losing it all. Was her freedom really worth the cost?

In my world where I live at you cant fall asleep in your car because a drunk cop may shot you. You have to sit outside with your kids or they may see a gay dude running around naked on wet. Throwing shitty pads on top of cars and rubbing his privates on the ground. In my world cps has more power than the feds. In my world your friends get shot for having an opinion and a voice. Our system has some times unknowingly thrown an innocent person in jail. Then theres times when they throw bogus charges on you. If you let them they will try in beat you down mentally or physically. To a point where you cant take it any more and you either give up or fight harder to survive. Our great leaders who really wanted to make a change got shot, set up or sent to jail for life. So tell me how I got here divorced after 17 years of marriage and 4 kids. In the process I loose a 3 bedroom house with a two car garage a backyard and four dogs. How did I get here with a man that lives such a mysterious life that I dont even know if hes married, just have a lot of women, or on crack. If not all of them put together. He just doesnt know that I am tired of his senior citizen excuses. Oh baby Im tired, my back hurt, my high blood pressure. I just be sitting there like damn I know your tongue work. Oh yea I forgot to tell you my fourth childs father Wilbert is bought fifty years old. My first three childrens father, Lawrence is the same age as me but he act kind of, well we gone call it special, sometimes. The crazy thing about it is the more you let a man chase you, and play by your rules and not his, the more they love and respect you. The moment you make it all about them they loose interest. Love is crazy it affects your heart and your brain. I keep waiting for someone to wake me up. I just found out my mom only has two weeks to live according to the doctor. Shes been having cancer for the past fifteen years but only found out seven years ago because of a car wreck. Its only the grace of god shes still here for this long. Every day she gets weaker and weaker. It breaks my heart to see her like this. Lord please be with my family we just lost an uncle.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, institutions of higher education have been viewed as the gateway to a better future, despite the fact that so many of the neighborhoods surrounding them have been filled with hopelessness and despair. In Promise and Betrayal, the authors want nothing less than to start a revolution in higher education, calling on partnerships between "town and gown" to create sustainable urban neighborhoods. John I. Gilderbloom and R. L. Mullins Jr. detail how higher education institutions can play an important role in helping to revitalize our poor neighborhoods by forming partnerships with public, private, and nonprofit groups. They advocate leaving the "ivory tower" and supplying the community with expert knowledge as well as creative and technical resources.

Book excerpt: Some really great books just keep getting better! For seventeen years The Betrayal Bond has been the primary source for therapists and patients wrestling the effects of emotional pain and harm caused by exploitation from someone they trusted. Divorce, litigation, incest and child abuse, domestic violence, kidnapping, professional exploitation and religious abuse are all areas of trauma bonding. These are situations and relationships of incredible intensity or importance lend themselves more easily to an exploitation of trust or power. In The Betrayal Bond, Dr. Carnes presents an in-depth study of these relationships; why they form, who is most susceptible, and how they become so powerful. Dr. Carnes also gives a clear explanation of the bond that compels people to tolerate the intolerable, and for the first time, maps out the brain connection that makes being with hurtful people comparable to 'a drug of choice.' Most importantly, Carnes provides practical steps to identify compulsive attachment patterns and ultimately to change or end them for good. This new edition includes: New science for understanding how our brains can make a prison of bad relationships New assessments and insights based on 50,000 research participants A new section utilizing the latest findings in attachment research and narrative therapy to concretely rewrite and rescript bad experiences A redefinition of the factors contributing to addictive relationships

Book excerpt: From Iago to Fredo, Judas to General Hospital, acts of betrayal fascinate us. Eventually we all encounter this universal experience of human interaction, but despite its ubiquity, being betrayed can turn our lives upside down and leave us feeling suddenly frail and alone. Betrayal only arises out of sharing something of yourself with another, and its impact speaks to the great tragedy of human relations: at bottom, other people are unknowable. While most attempts to study betrayal only consider its moral or psychological dimensions, Gabriella Turnaturi here examines betrayal as an act embedded in social relationships whose meanings change over time. For example, adultery is one of the most recognizable forms of betrayal, but a wide gulf exists between its role in Madame Bovary and in The Ice Storm. Therefore, Turnaturi contends, in order to examine the many meanings of betrayal we need to understand its context in a specific time and place. Born from the unpredictable possibilities of human interaction, betrayal emerges as a sociological event in this thought-provoking meditation on the stab in the back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presumed sovereignty of individuals and the facilitating powers of the markets have generated a universal and ethically neutral conception of both social and economic organisation. This ground-breaking text re-examines the purpose of society and the role of economics in it, arguing that the absence of a beneficial natural order calls for the role of the collective in social and economic life to be revisited. Drawing on some key figures marking milestones in the evolution of social and economic thinking, the author offers a critique of mainstream economics as a way of thinking and as a provider of guiding principles for economic and social organisation. Volume I introduces the reader to the emergence of natural order; considers the internal logic of economics and how it managed to be so persuasive in its recommendation for competitive interactions to govern all aspects of social life in all societies and across them; demonstrates that the economic conception of an order which solves society’s economic problem is, in fact, an impossibility that turns the natural phenomenon of markets into a problem rather than an ideal; and, addresses the other apparent appeal of markets: their association with the ideas of freedom and justice. This is a bold and foundational new work that offers an original and innovative perspective on economics and its challenges, addressing core areas such as behavioural economics, evolutionary game theory and links between social sciences (anthropology, philosophy) and neurosciences.”
