Book excerpt: In the Christian tradition, especially in the works of Paul, Augustine, and the exegetes of the Middle Ages, the body is a twofold entity consisting of inner and outer persons that promises to find its true materiality in a time to come. A potentially transformative vehicle, it is a dynamic mirror that can reflect the work of the divine within and substantially alter its own materiality if receptive to divine grace. The writings of Hadewijch of Brabant, a thirteenth-century beguine, engage with this tradition in sophisticated ways both singular to her mysticism and indicative of the theological milieu of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Crossing linguistic and historical boundaries, Patricia Dailey connects the embodied poetics of Hadewijch's visions, writings, and letters to the work of Julian of Norwich, Hildegard of Bingen, Marguerite of Oingt, and other mystics and visionaries. She establishes new criteria to more consistently understand and assess the singularity of women's mystical texts and, by underscoring the similarities between men's and women's writings of the time, collapses traditional conceptions of gender as they relate to differences in style, language, interpretative practices, forms of literacy, and uses of textuality.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Man Booker Prize Winner of the 2012 Costa Book of the Year Award The sequel to Hilary Mantel's 2009 Man Booker Prize winner and New York Times bestseller, Wolf Hall delves into the heart of Tudor history with the downfall of Anne Boleyn Though he battled for seven years to marry her, Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn. She has failed to give him a son and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile from the court, Anne stands starkly exposed, the focus of gossip and malice. At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down. Over three terrifying weeks, Anne is ensnared in a web of conspiracy, while the demure Jane Seymour stands waiting her turn for the poisoned wedding ring. But Anne and her powerful family will not yield without a ferocious struggle. Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies follows the dramatic trial of the queen and her suitors for adultery and treason. To defeat the Boleyns, Cromwell must ally with his natural enemies, the papist aristocracy. What price will he pay for Anne's head? Bring Up the Bodies is one of The New York Times' 10 Best Books of 2012, one of Publishers Weekly's Top 10 Best Books of 2012 and one of The Washington Post's 10 Best Books of 2012

Book excerpt: "You’d think a Miss America swimsuit winner would feel completely confident about her body, right? Not always! So I decided to write the book I wish I’d had as a teen and in college—an honest, funny, practical, medically accurate, totally reassuring guide to how women’s bodies actually look, smell, feel, behave, and change. Alongside real-deal photographs of women just like you and me (no airbrushing, no supermodels, no kidding) you’ll find medical pictures of things you need to be able to recognize, true confessions by yours truly, and the encouragement you need to appreciate the uniqueness, strength, and beauty of your body. What are you waiting for?"—Nancy Redd From fashion magazines to taboo Web sites, curious young women have access to tons of old wives' tales about and thousands of airbrushed and inaccurate images of the female body—misinformation and harmful portrayals that can lead to low self-esteem, self-destructive acts, or even disturbing plastic surgery procedures. Teaming up with a leading physician specializing in adolescent health issues, Harvard graduate and former Miss Virginia Nancy Redd now offers a down-to-earth, healing, and reassuring response to those damaging myths. In Body Drama, Redd gives girls insight into the issues they're often too ashamed to raise with a doctor or parent. She also reveals her own experiences with the culture of "American beauty," and shows readers all the many versions of "normal." From body hair and bras, to acne and weight issues, along with crucial issues such as the importance of a healthy self image, Body Drama is a groundbreaking book packed with informative fast facts, FYIs, how-tos, and moving personal anecdotes as well as hundreds of un-retouched photographs. A highly visual book, it’s the first of its kind for women: filled with real information and real photographs of real bodies, to celebrate all our different shapes and sizes. Named by Glamour magazine as one of America’s top-ten college women "most likely to succeed—at anything," Redd has spent the most recent years of her life on a mission to tackle the issues least discussed but most significant in young women’s lives. Celebrating the many versions of "normal," and replacing seriously erroneous information with the honest, medically proven truth in a language all girls can understand, Body Drama dares to empower a new generation—with facts instead of fantasies, and the priceless gift of self-knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus made many startling claims. Among the most startling, however, must be his assertion that the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms contain things written about him. Ask any Christian to point to Old Testament verses that contain things written about Jesus and you’ll see just how startling a claim this is. The first Christians, however, faced no such problem. As the book of Acts demonstrates, the early church preached Jesus from the Old Testament. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 15 Paul tells us that Jesus not only died according to the Scriptures but that he was raised according to the Scriptures. Paul asserts here that the Old Testament foretells Jesus’s resurrection. Contemporary scholars will warn us to be wary about reading Jesus back into the Old Testament. They’ll suggest that resurrection and the afterlife is an alien concept in the Old Testament. Paul, however, clearly invites us to search the Scriptures for precursors, promises, and prophecies about the resurrection. So, let’s follow the lead of Paul and find Easter in the Old Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we find meaning in worship? How might we worship more meaningfully? These questions invite us into a field of study called liturgical semiotics. This book takes a deep dive into this arena, using the metaphor of breathing as a vehicle for the journey. It is about getting back to what is at the core of the Christian identity, namely worship, and exploring how to find and make meaning in it. In doing so, we will find out not only more about our worship, but about ourselves. Liturgical semiotics is not only about the liturgical event, but about the semiotician as well. Along the way, using BREATHE, GASP, and RASP as guides, we will read the signs of our worship, connect the dots of the stories it tells, and uncover new meanings. We will also find ways to make our worship more evocative and more resonant with the current culture. Take a deep breath, and dive in.

Book excerpt: The doctrines of grace have sparked debate as well as inspiration since the beginning of the Reformation. For their proponents, they form the foundation of orthodox belief. For their critics, they represent an assault on free will and the nature of man. Known more commonly as the TULIP of Calvinism, these five tenets have been maligned and denigrated by those who fail to understand them. Worse yet, the truths behind these five points are being lost to generations of new believers as the tradition behind them is being quickly forgotten. Clarity and biblical reflection on the TULIP of Calvinism is required. Through the imagery and lens of modern medicine, Dr. Thomas J. Kessler sheds new light on these crucial aspects of Calvinism and why they deserve appreciation by Christians abroad. The disease of sin has infected and devastated all of humanity. Is there hope for a cure? If so, how was it procured and to whom has it been applied? Can we have confidence in the eternal healing of such a treatment? Drawing from his experiences as a physician and insights from medicine at large, Dr. Kessler sets the record straight. Calvinism represents the biblical concept of God as our great physician, and the sacrifice of His Son as our only cure.
