Book Synopsis Critical Game Theory by : Wayne Eastman
Download or read book Critical Game Theory written by Wayne Eastman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The models in mainstream game theory generally assume that actors act according to a single, consistent utility function. Empirical studies, common sense, and humanistic wisdom all suggest that that assumption is too simple. This book starts with an assumption that actors are controlled by diverse, inconsistent forces and demonstrates that introducing this level of complexity allows for the creation of critical game theory models that can help to attain new insights into nature, human nature, human institutions, and human behavior. The book begins with an evolutionary, or Evo, model in which the players have concerns for the other player as well as egoistic interests. Part I analyzes the Prisoner’s Dilemma using a literary, or Lit, model in which the players have entropic, or Entro, masochistic and sadistic drives as well as altruistic and egoistic ones. Part II suggests that the Lit model opens the door to a “where Entro is, let Evo be” critical perspective on politics. Part III considers how core stories in mainstream game theory can be usefully supplemented and deepened by critical models and reflects on possible futures for critical game theory. The discussion of games and subgames includes poems as well as matrices, in pursuit of a mode of presentation that respects the complex, simultaneously humanistic and scientific qualities of critical game theory. The vision of critical game theory advanced in the book will be of significant interest to researchers in an array of theoretical and applied disciplines, including but not limited to literature, psychology, political science, economics, computer science, ethics, business ethics, law, and law and economics.

Book Synopsis The Constitution of Shelley's Poetry by : Edward T. Duffy
Download or read book The Constitution of Shelley's Poetry written by Edward T. Duffy and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Constitution of Shelley's Poetry' is a close philosophical reading of 'Prometheus Unbound' and other Shelley works from the perspective of the argument or drama of language played out in its pages. The book urges and practises close reading, but in the thought of Stanley Cavell, it finds and develops philosophical grounds for this ostensibly old-fashioned approach, and it implicitly proposes an understanding of language very different from those currently assumed in literary studies.

Book Synopsis Mimesis and Its Romantic Reflections by : Frederick Burwick
Download or read book Mimesis and Its Romantic Reflections written by Frederick Burwick and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Romantic theories of art and literature, the notion of mimesis&—defined as art&’s reflection of the external world&—became introspective and self-reflexive as poets and artists sought to represent the act of creativity itself. Frederick Burwick seeks to elucidate this Romantic aesthetic, first by offering an understanding of key Romantic mimetic concepts and then by analyzing manifestations of the mimetic process in literary works of the period. Burwick explores the mimetic concepts of &"art for art's sake,&" &"Idem et Alter,&" and &"palingenesis of mind as art&" by drawing on the theories of Philo of Alexandria, Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Schiller, Friederich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, Thomas De Quincey, and Germaine de Sta&ël. Having established the philosophical bases of these key mimetic concepts, Burwick analyzes manifestations of mimesis in the literature of the period, including ekphrasis in the work of Thomas De Quincey, mirrored images in the poems of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth, and the twice-told tale in the novels of Charles Brockden Brown, E. T. A. Hoffmann, and James Hogg. Although artists of this period have traditionally been dismissed in discussions of mimesis, Burwick demonstrates that mimetic concepts comprised a major component of the Romantic aesthetic.
Download or read book Anonymous Life written by Jacques Khalip and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romanticism is often synonymous with models of identity and action that privilege individual empowerment and emotional autonomy. In the last two decades, these models have been the focus of critiques of Romanticism's purported self-absorption and alienation from politics. While such critiques have proven useful, they often draw attention to the conceptual or material tensions of romantic subjectivity while accepting a conspicuous, autonomous subject as a given, thus failing to appreciate the possibility that Romanticism sustains an alternative model of being, one anonymous and dispossessed, one whose authority is irreducible to that of an easily recognizable, psychologized persona. In Anonymous Life, Khalip goes against the grain of these dominant critical stances by examining anonymity as a model of being that is provocative for writers of the era because it resists the Enlightenment emphasis on transparency and self-disclosure. He explores how romantic subjectivity, even as it negotiates with others in the social sphere, frequently rejects the demands of self-assertion and fails to prove its authenticity and coherence.

Book excerpt: In Prometheus's Child, the first in an explosive series from New York Times bestseller Harold Coyle and noted military author Barrett Tillman, a new type of war is being fought by private paramilitary companies at the beck and call of the highest bidder. With the military and intelligence agencies spread thin, the United States is constantly calling upon the services of these organizations--and Strategic Solutions Inc. is among the best. What begins as a relatively simply military-training mission in Chad turns into a high-stakes game of nuclear brinkmanship as the men and women of Security Solutions, Inc. stumble across a plot to extract and ship yellowcake—the base fuel for a nuclear weapon—to any number of countries hostile to the US. The in-country force tracks the operation to a supposedly abandoned remote mine in the desert. They strike, but a convoy carrying the yellowcake shipment escapes their trap. With time running out, the SSI teams must pull together like they never have before to find a ship in international waters and recover its deadly cargo—by any means necessary. Book Synopsis Shelleyan Eros by : William A. Ulmer
Download or read book Shelleyan Eros written by William A. Ulmer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work William Ulmer boldly advances our understanding of Shelley's concept of love by exploring eros as a figure for the poet's political and artistic aspirations. Applying a combination of deconstructive, historicist, and psychoanalytic approaches to six major poems, Ulmer follows the logic of the writing's rhetoric of love by tracing links between such elements as imagination, eros, metaphor, allegory, mirroring, repetition, death, and narcissism. Ulmer takes the mutual desire of self and antitype as a paradigm for rhetorical and social relations throughout Shelley and, in a significant departure from critical consensus, argues that his poetics were predominantly idealist. Ulmer demonstrates how the idealism of Shelleyan eros centers on a symbiosis of contraries organized as a dialectical variation of metaphor. In so doing, he contends that this idealism is both a rhetorical construct and revolutionary agency, and traces the failure of Shelley's visionary humanism to the gradual emergence of contradictions latent in his idealism. What emerges are new readings of individual texts and a reconsideration of the poet's imaginative development. Originally published in 1990. Book Synopsis The Ruse of Techne by : Dimitris Vardoulakis
Download or read book The Ruse of Techne written by Dimitris Vardoulakis and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ruse of Techne offers a reappraisal of Heidegger’s entire work by focusing on the forms of activity he regards as separate from instrumentality. Non-instrumental activities like authenticity, poetry, and thinking—in short, the ineffectual—are critical for Heidegger as they offer the only path to the truth of being throughout his work. By unearthing the source of the conception of non-instrumental action in Heidegger’s reading of Aristotle, Vardoulakis elaborates how it forms part of Heidegger’s response to an old problem, namely, how to account for difference after positing a single and unified being that is not amenable to change. He further demonstrates that an action without ends and effects leads to an ethics and politics rife with difficulties and contradictions that only become starker when compared to other responses to the same problem that we find in the philosophical tradition and which rely on instrumentality. Heidegger’s conception of an action without ends or effect forgets the role of instrumentality in the tradition that posits a single, unified being. And yet, the ineffectual has had a profound influence in how continental philosophy determines the ethical and the political since World War II. The critique of the ineffectual in Heidegger is thus effectively a critique of the conception of praxis in continental philosophy. Vardoulakis proposes that it is urgent to undo the forgetting of instrumentality if we are to conceive of a democratic politics and an ethics fit to respond to the challenges of high capitalism.

As many people are anxious and trapped at home during these challenging times, I have lowered the prices on all of my titles. God bless and be safe. I am the fount of creation, the watchmaker of time. I was the teacher of the Gods before they betrayed me--my teachings and compassion they used against me. Much of your world I made a paradise, but in its wastes I was imprisoned. And from there a secret kingdom I built--and a rebellion I marshaled. Legions of Valaroma, Gods of vengeance, I led into battle. I wielded the Wilding Kingdom and conjured terrible daemons--and in my image I created my children. Many victories we had, though defeats there were, too. Through the ruin of this world, I lived in the pain and tears of my children. With their eyes I watched Others poison thoughts and stir hostile deeds. I fled with the life from their faces as they were besieged and slain by the hordes created in their despite. Through them I wielded their weapons in combat, in their hands I raised the stones of their homes rebuilt. In their voices I sang the songs of their victories. I lived in the heroism of their kings and together we waged war on the Devil. I lived for ages beyond count and passed many ages ago. Yet, I am come again--my children. From no more than the Watcher through the dream of your lives, I am become the Voice to those with the spirit to hear and the power to conjure. On your suffering and love, an awareness has awakened an ancient magick. Even now my shadow rises. In your tongue, I am Prometheus--I am your Deliverer.
