Book Synopsis An International History of Terrorism by : Jussi M. Hanhimäki
Download or read book An International History of Terrorism written by Jussi M. Hanhimäki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide readers with the tools to understand the historical evolution of terrorism and counterterrorism over the past 150 years. In order to appreciate the contemporary challenges posed by terrorism it is necessary to look at its evolution, at the different phases it has gone through, and the transformations it has experienced. The same applies to the solutions that states have come up with to combat terrorism: the nature of terrorism changes but still it is possible to learn from past experiences even though they are not directly applicable to the present. This book provides a fresh look at the history of terrorism by providing in-depth analysis of several important terrorist crises and the reactions to them in the West and beyond. The general framework is laid out in four parts: terrorism prior to the Cold War, the Western experience with terrorism, non-Western experiences with terrorism, and contemporary terrorism and anti-terrorism. The issues covered offer a broad range of historical and current themes, many of which have been neglected in existing scholarship; it also features a chapter on the waves phenomenon of terrorism against its international background. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism studies, political violence, international history, security studies and IR.

Book Synopsis French Arms Exports by : Lucie Béraud-Sudreau
Download or read book French Arms Exports written by Lucie Béraud-Sudreau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From De Gaulle onwards, France’s strategic independence has been predicated on self-sufficiency in modern weapons. To achieve and maintain the requisite defence-industrial base, in the context of limited domestic orders, Paris sought to promote the export of its arms. During the Cold War, this underpinned but was also an expression of France’s determination to resist bipolar domination. France offered customers around the world an alternative to reliance on one superpower or the other; and in doing so it generated the revenue to support an extensive domestic arms industry. The end of the Cold War ushered in fundamental changes, however: Western defence spending shrank and the global market was turned upside down. While France’s arms-export policy was less affected by human-rights concerns than other democracies, it was not immune to pressures stemming from the consolidation of Europe’s defence-industrial base and the increased interest of the EU in regulating the arms trade. This Adelphi book considers how France has responded to changing political and market circumstances in the way that it promotes and controls the export of weapons. It examines the rationale for considering a liberal arms-export policy as essential to French independence, and the institutional arrangements that underpinned this. It tracks the dramatic changes in the global arms market since 1990, in terms of demand and market competition, and charts the response of the French government to these changes. The book underlines how the French machinery of government, as a directing force behind the defence industry, has been resistant to the notion of export restraint – even in the case of sales to authoritarian regimes. However, it argues that France now faces a dilemma over whether to continue with a long-successful course, or to moderate its independence through greater collaboration to bolster European integration and better compete globally.

Book Synopsis Moralizing the Market by : Yves-Marie Péréon
Download or read book Moralizing the Market written by Yves-Marie Péréon and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the late 1960s, France attempted a complete overhaul of its financial regulations without being forced to do so by a stock market crash or the collapse of its banking system. Out of pure political expediency, Gaullist reformers seized the opportunity offered by a minor insider trading case to establish the "Commission des Opérations de Bourse (COB), an independent commission in charge of regulating the securities market. Even more surprisingly, these staunch defenders of national sovereignty drew their inspiration from an American model, the Securities and Exchange Commission. Rather than a comparative study of securities regulation in France and the United States, the book is an investigation of the dynamics of policy transfer in the field of securities regulation. Along the way, it reveals a great deal about French and American perceptions of morality and capitalism, but also, more generally, about the exercise of political power in modern democracies, the interaction between business and government, and the mechanisms of institutional innovation"--
