Download or read book Croatia written by Marcus Tanner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the ashes of former Yugoslavia an independent Croatian state has arisen, the fulfillment, in the words of President Franjo Tudjman, of the Croats' "thousand-year-old dream of independence." Yet few countries in Europe have been born amid such bitter controversy and bloodshed: the savage war between pro-independence forces and the Yugoslav army left about one-third of the country in ruins and resulted in the flight of a quarter of a million of the country's Serbian minority. In this book an eyewitness to the breakup of Yugoslavia provides the first full account of the rise, fall, and rebirth of Croatia from its medieval origins to today's tentative peace. Marcus Tanner describes the creation of the first Croatian state; its absorption into feudal Hungary in the Middle Ages; the catastrophic experience of the Ottoman invasion; the absorption of the diminished country into Habsburg Austria; the evolution of modern Croatian nationalism after the French Revolution; and the circumstances that propelled Croatia into the arms of Nazi Germany and the brutal, home-grown "Ustashe" movement in the Second World War. Finally, drawing on first-hand knowledge of many of the leading figures in the conflict, Tanner explains the failure of Tito's Communists to solve Yugoslavia's tortured national problem by creating a federal state, and the violent implosion after his death.Croatia's unique position on the crossroads of Europe-between Eastern and Western Christendom, the Mediterranean, and the Balkans and between the old Habsburg and Ottoman empires-has been both a curse and a blessing, inviting the attention of larger and more powerful neighbors. The turbulence and drama of Croatia's past are vigorously portrayed in this powerful history.

Book Synopsis Radical Pedagogies by : Beatriz Colomina
Download or read book Radical Pedagogies written by Beatriz Colomina and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments in architectural education in the post–World War II era that challenged and transformed architectural discourse and practice. In the decades after World War II, new forms of learning transformed architectural education. These radical experiments sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture as much as they challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice. Although many of the experimental programs were subsequently abandoned, terminated, or assimilated, they nevertheless helped shape and in some sense define architectural discourse and practice. This book explores and documents these radical pedagogies and efforts to defy architecture’s status quo. The experiments include the adaptation of Bauhaus pedagogy as a means of “unlearning” under the conditions of decolonization in Africa; a movement to design for “every body,” including the disabled, by architecture students and faculty at the University of California, Berkeley; the founding of a support network for women interested in the built environment, regardless of their academic backgrounds; and a design studio in the USSR that offered an alternative to the widespread functionalist approach in Soviet design. Viewed through their dissolution and afterlife as well as through their founding stories, these projects from the last century raise provocative questions about architecture’s role in the new century.
Book Synopsis Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment IX by : Hermann H. Hahn
Download or read book Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment IX written by Hermann H. Hahn and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2007-05-16 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of whether or not we will reach the ambitious goal of the Millennium Declaration still dominates the discussions of water supply and sanitation experts on all levels, governmental, institutional, technological and operational. Our contribution, the Proceedings of the 12th Gothenburg Symposium, the symposium for the sharing of scientific and practical experience in integrated water resources management, is mainly a technological one. This book, as has its predecessors in the series, provides information and technical solutions to accomplish this mammoth task. It is the outcome of collective experience and know-how exchanged between experts in the field of water technology from all over the world, from the Americas, from Central and Southern Africa, from Europe and from different parts of Asia. However, we must realise that very often it is not the technological development that determines progress but rather the legal, financial and organisational framework. And so this book and this symposium differs from its predecessors in that, for the first time, the focus is also on these non-technical aspects that may or may not set the stage for our technological solutions. The Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatment Series provides authoritative coverage of the key current developments in the chemical treatment of water and wastewater, in theory or practice, and related problems such as sludge production, as well as properties, and the reuse of chemicals and chemically-treated waters and sludges. Chemical Water and Wastewater Treatmentis a valuable resource for managers, scientists, plant operators and others interested in chemical water and wastewater treatment technology.

Book Synopsis Public Mobility Systems by : A. Pratelli
Download or read book Public Mobility Systems written by A. Pratelli and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Mobility Systems deals with real case studies relating to mass transport, rapid transit services, carpooling measures and car sharing strategies. The included papers present case studies from all over the world including: Zagreb, Croatia; Mexico City, Mexico; Holy Makkah, Saudi Arabia and the Gauteng region of South Africa. Papers are also included which relate to the more theoretical aspects of transit systems, which span general methodology, the latest advancements and model analysis. It is well-known that model development cannot replace a deep knowledge and understanding of real world phenomena and human experiences. To this end, the book collects fragments of public mobility systems both from international practices and academic theory, in an effort to share current research and ideas to progress and lay the groundwork for future innovations. The book will be of interest to research and academic organisations as well as practitioners, especially in large civil engineering consultancies. Many papers from the book can also be used as advanced background reading in graduate courses on transport studies and traffic engineering.
