Book excerpt: Organizations achieve project success by both doing the right projects and doing projects right. This article examines the relationship between using project categorization systems and achieving project success. In doing so, it defines the purpose of project categorization systems and describes the challenges in developing such systems. It also reviews the field's literature on categorizing projects. It then outlines this study's six-step methodology to develop a holistic project categorization system, a process that involved a literature survey, focus group meetings, and Web-based questionnaire. It analyzes the findings from both the focus group and the questionnaire; it evaluates the three multi-dimensional categorization systems that the studied organizations most use. It also explains why organizations and researchers use categorization systems; it suggests how organizations can evaluate and redesign their categorization systems.

Book excerpt: Agile project management has received a lot of attention recently, although much more among practitioners than among researchers. Compared with a traditional approach, it can offer benefits to some projects, but also, it can be inappropriate for others, especially in its native field of software development projects. The question is: How do we determine which approach to use and in which situations? By examining the characteristics of each approach, it is possible to define its appropriateness to a specific project type. This paper focuses on development of a conceptual categorization model for software development projects. It is based on a thorough literature review of the appropriate use of both traditional and agile project management approaches, as well as on a review of the specifics of software development projects. It also builds on existing categorization systems. A total of ten project characteristics were identified, which determine approach appropriateness on an operational level, and a conceptual model of agile software development project characteristics is given and encompasses all of the recognized characteristics. This model represents a first step towards a comprehensive methodology evaluation framework based on project categorization and will serve as a basis for further research in the field of software development project management.

Book excerpt: A taxonomy we didn’t know we needed for identifying and cataloging stray shopping carts by artist and photographer Julian Montague. Abandoned shopping carts are everywhere, and yet we know so little about them. Where do they come from? Why are they there? Their complexity and history baffle even the most careful urban explorer. Thankfully, artist Julian Montague has created a comprehensive and well-documented taxonomy with The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America. Spanning thirty-three categories from damaged, fragment, and plow crush to plaza drift and bus stop discard, it is a tonic for times defined increasingly by rhetoric and media and less by the plain objects and facts of the real world. Montague’s incomparable documentation of this common feature of the urban landscape helps us see the natural and man-made worlds—and perhaps even ourselves—anew. First published in 2006 to great perplexity and acclaim alike, Montague’s book now appears in refreshed and expanded form. Told in an exceedingly dry voice, with full-color illustrations and photographs throughout, it is both rigorous and absurd, offering a strangely compelling vision of how we approach, classify, and understand the environments around us. A new afterword sheds light on the origins of the project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research-based book takes an organization-wide perspective to describe the governance and governmentality for projects in organizations. Governance of projects defines and directs the ways managers of projects, programs, and project portfolios carry out their work. Governmentality is the way the managers of these managers present themselves to those they lead. Governance and Governmentality for Projects starts with introducing existing theories, models and paradigms for governance and governmentality. It then develops a chronological framework of the ways governance and governmentality for projects is enabled in organizations, how it subsequently unfolds in organizations of different types and sectors, and the consequences of different governance approaches for project results, trust, control, and ethical issues in projects. Special emphasis is given to the link between corporate governance and the governance of project, programs and project portfolios. Three real-life case studies exemplify the research findings described in the book. Through its structure this book describes the development of governance and governmentality in the realm of projects from its organizational origins, via observable practices, to expected consequences of different implementations. Aimed at academics, post-graduate students in business and management, reflective practitioners, standards or policy developers, those in governance roles and others in need of a detailed knowledge of the spectrum of project related governance in organizations, this book will help develop a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical and practical underpinnings of the subject, their interaction, and implications for implementation. This allows for understanding and developing of both generic and idiosyncratic governance structures, such as those needed in project-based organizations.

Book excerpt: The article aims to renew the classification system of PMOs within the context of organizational design and proposes an empirical categorization of PMOs based on types of projects: engineering and construction, information systems/information technology, business processes, and new product development. The research adopted a quantitative approach with a survey of 114 entities belonging to 42 departments and agencies within a single public administration. The findings show that this categorization system of PMOs has the potential to support the organizational design of PMOs in organizational context, structural characteristics, functions, and performance. This article contributes to the relevance of organizational design within the project management field.

While Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky and Jörg Sasse have gradually adopted digital imaging tools in the early 1990s, other photographers from the Düsseldorf School have remained faithful to film-based technologies. By evaluating the aesthetic and discursive preconditions of this situation and by extensively analyzing the digital work of these three photographers, this book shows that the digital turn in photography was anticipated by the conceptualization of images within systems, and thus offers new perspectives for understanding the »digital revolution«.
