Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of the Barberry Eradication Campaign in Illinois in 1929 The production of rust - resistant varieties of grains probably will be much more successful, however, when all common barberry bushes have been eradicated. The reason for this is shown in the recent important discoveries made in the Canadian Rust Research Laboratories at Winnipeg and by Dr. E. C. Stakman and his coworkers at the University of Minnesota. Both of these groups conducting independent research have proved that entirely new strains of stem rust are produced if two_different forms cross-breed on barberry leaves. The certainty that new forms of the dangerous disease may appear suddenly, makes the eradication of the common barberry all the more imperative, since it is on the barberry alone that this crossing can occur in nature. The new and appar ently resistant varieties of grains are not safe with barberries near. If for no other reason than to protect the new kinds of superwheat which are now in the process of being developed, all common barberry bushes should 1x3 destroyed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of the Barberry Eradication Campaign in Michigan in 1930 These are some of the reasons why so many large escaped barberry bushes bearing fruit are found in Michigan. These bushes are old enough to be the parents and grandparents of a host of others scattered among the wooded hills, in cedar swamps, and on the sand dunes along Lake Michigan. A survey was organized to find and destroy the largest number of common barberry bushes in the shortest possible time in order to quickly reduce the number of fruiting bushes. Many bar berries were missed ih this first hurried search. Originally all bushes were pulled or dug, but because so many of the roots, which were left in the ground by this method, Sprouted the use of chem icals as killing agents was introduced. Common salt or kerosene properly applied killed the bushes and prevented all sprouting. New seedling bushes continually Spring up, however, and it has been found that seeds often germinate after lying inactive on the ground for years. A constant watch and campaign of eradication must be maintained for some years to come. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree-ring dating (dendrochronology) is a method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns. As author James Speer notes, trees are remarkable bioindicators. Although there are other scientific means of dating climatic and environmental events, dendrochronology provides the most reliable of all paleorecords. Dendrochronology can be applied to very old trees to provide long-term records of past temperature, rainfall, fire, insect outbreaks, landslides, hurricanes, and ice storms--to name only a few events. This comprehensive text addresses all of the subjects that a reader who is new to the field will need to know and will be a welcome reference for practitioners at all levels. It includes a history of the discipline, biological and ecological background, principles of the field, basic scientific information on the structure and growth of trees, the complete range of dendrochronology methods, and a full description of each of the relevant subdisciplines. Individual chapters address the composition of wood, methods of field and laboratory study, dendroarchaeology, dendroclimatology, dendroecology, dendrogeomorphology, and dendrochemistry. The book also provides thorough introductions to common computer programs and methods of statistical analysis. In the final chapter, the author describes "frontiers in dendrochronology," with an eye toward future directions in the field. He concludes with several useful appendixes, including a listing of tree and shrub species that have been used successfully by dendrochronologists. Throughout, photographs and illustrations visually represent the state of knowledge in the field.

The book comprises a number of general essays, exploring and challenging common perceptions about such species, and a series of case studies of specific species in specific contexts. Its geographical coverage ranges from the United Kingdom to New Zealand by way of South Africa, India and Palestine; and the essays cover both historical and recent introductions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year we see a remarkable increase in scientific knowledge. We are learning more each day about the world around us, about the numerous biological organisms of the biosphere, about the physical and chemical processes that shaped and continue to change our planet. The cataloging, retrieval, dissemination, and use of this new information along with the continued development of new computer technology provide some of the most challenging problems in science as we enter the Information Age. With the explosion of knowledge in science, it is especially important that students in introductory courses learn not only the basic material of a subject, but also about the newest developments in that subject. With this goal in mind, we have prepared a second edition of Introduction to Plant Diseases: Identification and Management. We prepared this edition with the same general purpose that we had for the first edition - to provide practical, up-to-date information that helps in the successful management of diseases on food, fiber, and landscape plants for students who do not have a strong background in the biological sciences. We included new information on (1) the precise identification of diseases and the pathogens that cause them, (2) the development of epidemics of plant diseases, (3) the application of biotechnology in plant pathology, (4) the use of alternative methods of crop production and disease management that help protect the environment, and (5) diseases that have become more important since the first edition was published.
