Book excerpt: The first NATO Advanced Study Institute on Nitrogen Ceramics held in 1976 at Canterbury came at a particularly significant moment in the development of this subject. The five-year period, 1971-75, had been an especially fruitful one in very many respects for work in the areas of covalent materials in general, and of the nitrides in particular. The Institute was therefore able to cap ture fully the spirit of excitement and adventure engendered by the outputs of numerous national research programmes, as well as those of many smaller research groups, concerning ceramics potent ially suitable for applications in a high temperature engineering context. It reflected accurately the state of knowledge with respect to the basic science, the powder technology, and the prop erties of materials based on silicon nitride and associated syst ems. The Proceedings of the Institute thus provided a good record for workers already in the field, and a useful textbook for new comers to the subject of nitrogen ceramics. The Canterbury Advanced Study Institute had a valuable educ ational and social function in bringing together for two weeks a large proportion of those workers most closely involved at that time with the nitrogen ceramics. The atmosphere of this meeting, providing both intensive discussions and informal contacts, made a lasting impression on the participants, and inevitably the question was raised of whether, and when, a second Advanced Study Institute might be held on this subject.

Book excerpt: The past five years have been considerable progress in sintering, post-sintering processing, and microstructure/property development in silicon nitride based ceramics. New materials such as sintered alpha-SiC and transformation-toughened zirconia have developed to the point where they provide systems designers with options other than silicon nitride based materials for high temperature, highly stressed structural applications. Successful demonstrations of a number of ceramic materials in engines and other high temperature structures are continuing to provide encouragement to the design community. What these developments would seem to point to, for the near future, is a dynamic highly competitive environment from which reliable, affordable high performance ceramics of many types will find their niche in high temperature engineering systems.

Book excerpt: As optical fiber communication systems have moved out of the laboratory and into commercial use over the past several years, the general field of guided wave and coherent optics has undergone a radical transformation. Research in optical communication has turned heavily towards single-mode technology and, totally new phenomena and applications of the existing technology, outside the communication field, have begun to proliferate. It was for this reason that we decided to organize a NATO Advanced Study Institute assembling the leading workers in this new domain, in order to define the state of the art, and, develop an idea of the new directions the field might take. The lectures and seminars presented at this Advanced Study Institute form the basis for this book. The subjects treated can be roughly grouped as : - New phenomena in optical fibers such as non-linear effects, soliton propagation and polarization conservation. - New applications of fibers, to measurements of rotation pressure, temperature etc ... and medical uses. - Advanced and exploratory work on single-mode fiber communica tion systems including the use of coherent transmission schemes and optical amplification. - Recent developments of optical information treatment based on four-wave mixing. - Integrated optical devices and technologies including bistable devices, parametric oscillators, and optical logic. In addition to these major topics, a number of national reviews and specialized seminars treating new guided wave structures and materials are included. The co-editors admit being rather pleased with the result.

Book excerpt: The suggestion that a NATO Advanced Study Institute would be an excellent forum for reviews and informed discussion on the broad subject of Nitrogen Ceramics, arose out of discussions with colleagues in the Department of Ceramics at the University of Leeds early in 1975. There was no doubt that such a meeting would be both very valuable and timely. Scientific and technological interest in the nitride ceramics and in silicon nitride in part icular had been growing steadily during the 20-year period following 1955. The intensive five-year programme initiated by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U. S. Department of Defence, on the development of a design capability in brittle materials for high temperature applications, had been based principally on silicon nitride and silicon carbide ceramics, and was due to reach the end of its first stage in the autumn of 1976. It was clear that by then a considerable volume of information covering many aspects of silicon nitride would be available for presentation or review. Coincidentally, the same five-year period had seen the discovery, and increasingly detailed investigation, of ceramic materials based on the AI-Si-N-O and similar systems. Besides being of great interest for their crystal chemistry and structural relationships, some of these materials could be assumed potentially to be of equal importance to the silicon nitride ceramics. More recently progress had also been made in the sintering of covalent materials, as demonstrated for the case of silicon carbide.

Book excerpt: This book explores new experimental phase diagrams of non-oxide ceramics, with a particular focus on the silicon nitride, silicon carbide and aluminum nitride, as well as the ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) systems. It features more than 80 experimental phase diagrams of these non-oxide ceramics, including three phase diagrams of UHTC systems, constructed by the authors. Physical chemistry data covering the period since the 1970s, collected by the author Z.K.Huang, is presented in six tables in the appendixes. It also includes 301 figures involving about 150 material systems. Most of the phase diagrams have been selected from the ACerS-NIST database with copyright permission. The book methodically presents numerous diagrams previously scattered in various journals and conferences worldwide. Providing extensive experimental data, it is a valuable reference resource on ceramics development and design for academic researchers, R&D engineers and graduate students.

Using a concise, practical and simple format this comprehensive work explains the concepts behind filled polymer systems and the rheological techniques involved in studying their behaviour. Aware that the readers of the book may come from differing background, the first three chapters familiarize the reader with the basics about polymers, fillers and physicochemical interactions between them, rheology and rheometry. Covering such topics as preparation of filled polymer systems, steady shear viscous properties and extentional flow properties, this book covers the areas of importance from an introductory level through to more complex issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic materials have proven increasingly important in industry and in the fields of electronics, communications, optics, transportation, medicine, energy conversion and pollution control, aerospace, construction, and recreation. Professionals in these fields often require an improved understanding of the specific ceramics materials they are using. Modern Ceramic Engineering, Third Edition helps provide this by introducing the interrelationships between the structure, properties, processing, design concepts, and applications of advanced ceramics. This student-friendly textbook effectively links fundamentals and fabrication requirements to a wide range of interesting engineering application examples. A follow-up to our best-selling second edition, the new edition now includes the latest and most important technological advances in the field. The author emphasizes how ceramics differ from metals and organics and encourages the application of this knowledge for optimal materials selection and design. New topics discuss the definition of ceramics, the combinations of properties fulfilled by ceramics, the evolution of ceramics applications, and their importance in modern civilization. A new chapter provides a well-illustrated review of the latest applications using ceramics and discusses the design requirements that the ceramics must satisfy for each application. The book also updates its chapter on ceramic matrix composites and adds a new section on statistical process control to the chapter on quality assurance. Modern Ceramic Engineering, Third Edition offers a complete and authoritative introduction and reference to the definition, history, structure, processing, and design of ceramics for students and engineers using ceramics in a wide array of industries.
