Book excerpt: Catalysis is a chemical or biological process whereby the presence of an external compound, a catalyst, serves as an agent to cause a chemical reaction to occur or to improve reaction performance without altering the external compound. Catalysis is a very important process from an industrial point of view since the production of most industrially important chemicals involve catalysis. Research into catalysis is a major field in applied science, and involves many fields of chemistry and physics. The new book brings together leading research in this vibrant field.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers and short communications presented at the 12th Canadian Symposium on Catalysis. The aim of the meeting was to present an update on new and established areas of catalysis research being performed in industry, government and university laboratories. Topics covered relate mainly to resource processing, such as heavy oil and natural gas upgrading, and to environmental issues. Approximately half the papers are included in sections on hydrogenation, carbon-carbon bond formation and environmental issues. The remaining papers cover general topics and homogeneous reactions. Examples include studies of hydroprocessing catalysts, carbon-carbon bond formation via methane oxidative coupling and dimerization of olefins, homogeneous catalysts in polymerization and dimerization reactions, performance of pillared clays, metal-oxygen cluster compounds, zeolites and catalysts prepared by metal oxide vapour synthesis. Studies that address the environmental issues include wet-air oxidation, catalytic elimination of organics, oxidation reactions and catalyst regeneration. The book provides practitioners of catalysis with an update on a wide number of topics and will be particularly useful to those interested in an overview of current catalysis research activities. Specialists in the areas of hydrogenation, carbon-carbon bond formation, homogeneous catalysis and environmental issues will also find a valuable set of new data and interesting discussions on these topics.

Book excerpt: Surface science emerged in the 1960s with the development of reliable ultrahigh vacuum apparatus, providing exact structures of surfaces of metal single crystals, information about their compositions, and relationships between surface structure and composition and catalytic reaction rates. Catalysis, the acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst (substance), provided much of the driving force for the early development of surface science. As surface science continues its rapid development, this book illustrates how it is still driven by the challenges of catalysis and how both theory and scanning tunneling microscopy have forcefully emerged as essential tools. It is also evident how surface science continues to serve as the foundation of catalytic science. This is a compendium written by leading surface scientists presenting an incisive assessment of up-to-date theoretical and experimental results constituting the foundation of fundamental understanding of surface catalysis. Book excerpt: The UK Catalysis Hub is a consortium of universities working together on fundamental and applied research to find out how catalysts work and to improve their effectiveness. The contribution of catalysis to manufacturing contributes to almost 40% of global GDP, making development and innovation within the field integral to industry.Modern Developments in Catalysis provides a review of current research and practise on catalysis, focussing on five main themes: catalysis design, environmental catalysis, catalysis and energy, chemical transformation and biocatalysis and biotransformations. Topics range from complex reactions to the intricacies of catalyst preparation for supported nanoparticles, while chapters illustrate the challenges facing catalytic science and the directions in which the field is developing. Edited by leaders of the UK Hub, this book provides insight into one of the most important areas of modern chemistry — it represents a unique learning opportunity for students and professionals studying and working towards speeding-up, improving and increasing the rate of catalytic reactions in science and industry.

Book excerpt: Most catalysts used in the chemical and petrochemical indus tries are strongly affected by one or another form of deactivation, leading to poor performances and reduced life. The increasing num ber of scientific communications devoted to the subject in recent years, and culminating with an International Symposium held in Antwerp in October 1980, is a measure of the interest it arouses in both the industrial and academic communities. A stage has been reached whereby it was thought that a NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Catalyst Deactivation" might be fruit ful in establishing the state of the art and in stimulating a more systematic research on the phenomenon. Such a meeting was held ~n Lagos, Portugal, from 18 to 29 May 1981. The purpose of the Institute was to present and discuss in a didatic and systematic way the various processes that lead to cata lyst deactivation, namely coking, poisoning and solid state trans formations, and at the same time to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences among the participants, drawn from industry and uni versity. The lectures presented at the Institute are collected in this volume with the exception of Dr. L.L.Hegedus "Catalyst Poisoning", which has been previously published (Catalysis Reviews, Science md Engineering, 23, 377-476, 1981).

Book excerpt: The impact of catalysis on the nation's economy is evidenced by the fact that catalytic technologies generate U.S. sales in excess of $400 billion per year and a net positive balance of trade of $16 billion annually. This book outlines recent accomplishments in the science and technology of catalysis and summarizes important likely challenges and opportunities on the near horizon. It also presents recommendations for investment of financial and human resources by industry, academe, national laboratories, and relevant federal agencies if the nation is to maintain continuing leadership in this fieldâ€"one that is critical to the chemical and petroleum processing industries, essential for energy-efficient means for environmental protection, and vital for the production of a broad range of pharmaceuticals.

Book excerpt: This conference on Catalysis was held under the auspices ofthe NATO Science Committee as part of its continuing effort to promote the useful progress of science through international cooperation. The Science Committee Conferences are deliberately designed and struc tured to focus expert attention on what is not known, rather than what is known. The participants are carefully selected to bring together a variety of complementary viewpoints. Through intensive group discussion, they seek to reach agreement on conclusions and recommendations for future research which will be of value to the scientific community. We believe that the endeavour has been particularly successful in the pre sent case. Some twenty-five papers, either in the form of reprints or specially written reviews were contributed by the participants for advance circulation, to outline the state-of-the art in the three areas ofheterogeneous, homogeneous and metalloenzyme catalysis and to focus attention on key problems. The availability of this background material precluded the need for lengthy intro ductory presentations and permitted rapid initiation of interdisciplinary discussions. All participants gave generously and enthusiastically of their expertise and effort during the week of the meeting, of ten long past normal bedtime hours, and we extend to them our deep gratitude.
