Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Lichenology by : Dalip Kumar Upreti
Download or read book Recent Advances in Lichenology written by Dalip Kumar Upreti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses in detail molecular, mycobiont culture, biomonitoring and bioprospection of lichens, providing insights into advances in different fields of lichenology by applying modern techniques and approaches and examining how their application has enhanced or changed classical approaches. It offers a valuable resource, especially for beginners, students and researchers from different academic backgrounds interested in the study of lichens. In recent years, the introduction of modern analytical techniques and approaches has significantly improved our understanding of the environment, including lichens. Lichens are unique organisms which possess untapped potential as effective and reliable bioindicators, sources of therapeutic phytochemicals, and as excellent extremophiles. The unique and peculiar characteristics of lichens underline the need for a multidimensional approach to explore their potential in various fields of environment science, botany and chemistry. Modern techniques, especially molecular techniques, have greatly enriched the field of lichen taxonomy and its position in the plant kingdom, revealing little-known species and exploring their evolutionary history, while multivariate analysis and GIS approaches have established lichens as an ideal and reliable tool for monitoring air pollution. Advanced culture techniques have expanded the pharmacological applications of lichens, which was formerly restricted due to their small biomass. The advent of sophisticated analytical instrumentation has now facilitated the isolation and characterization of lichens’ bioactive constituents, even in lower concentrations, as well as the estimation of their stress responses at different levels of pollution. As lichen diversity is adversely affected by increasing air pollution, there is a pressing need to develop effective management practices to conserve, restore and document lichen diversity.

Book Synopsis Biodeterioration of Stone Surfaces by : Larry St.Clair
Download or read book Biodeterioration of Stone Surfaces written by Larry St.Clair and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a timely volume in view of the considerable interest currently shown in the preservation of our cultural heritage, and the extensive and growing literature on the subject. Unfortunately, the latter is to be found in a wide variety of published sources, some aimed at a very specific readership and therefore not all that accessible to those who need this resource. The present volume draws together a spectrum of biodeterioration work from across the world to provide an overview of the materials examined and the methodologies employed to elucidate the nature of the problems, as well as an extensive and current bibliographical resource on lichen biodeterioration. Biodeterioration of historical and culturally important stone substrata is a complex problem to be addressed. Easy, risk-free solutions are simply not available to be dealt with by other than a wide range of expertise. Successful resolution of this issue will inevitably require a multidisciplinary effort, where biologists work in close cooperation with ecologists, geologists, geochemists, crystallographers, cultural property conservators, archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians in order to recommend the most effective management scheme. The advantage of this approach is obvious: multidisciplinary management teams with good leadership can ask more appropriate questions while developing much more thoughtful and informed decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 10th edition, of the acclaimed reference work, has more than 21,000 entries, and provides the most complete listing available of generic names of fungi, their families and orders, their attributes and descriptive terms. For each genus, the authority, the date of publication, status, systematic position, number of accepted species, distribution, and key references are given. Diagnoses of families and details of orders and higher categories are included for all groups of fungi. In addition, there are biographic notes, information on well-known metabolites and mycotoxins, and concise accounts of almost all pure and applied aspects of the subject (including citations of important literature). Book Synopsis The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland by : Clifford W. Smith
Download or read book The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland written by Clifford W. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 1064 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lichen Flora of Great Britain and Ireland published in 1992 was an outstanding achievement for British Lichenology. It was a pioneering work and the first of its type in Europe. This much enlarged revision reflects the considerable accumulation of new information that has occurred since the publication of the first edition and is symptomatic of the enormous advances in lichen taxonomy over the last two decades. There are keys to 327 genera and 1873 species, which is an increase of 386 species since it was first published. The publication provides detailed information on morphology, chemistry and distribution for each species written in language that is readily accessible, avoiding obscure terminology. Both the glossary and introductory sections have been expanded and the latter includes helpful advice on the identification and examination of lichens. The preparation of this new treatment has involved a large number of contributors both in the UK and overseas and represents the culmination of lichen studies at this time. This book is undoubtedly the standard work for the identification of lichens in Great Britain and Ireland and will be indispensable to all serious students of British, Irish and overseas lichenology and other biologists working in related fields of ecology, pollution, chemical and environmental studies."--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Taxonomical Revision of the Caloplaca Saxicola Group (Teloschistaceae, Lichen-forming Ascomycota) by : Ester Gaya
Download or read book Taxonomical Revision of the Caloplaca Saxicola Group (Teloschistaceae, Lichen-forming Ascomycota) written by Ester Gaya and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a revision of the Caloplaca saxicola group (Teloschistaceae, Ascomycetes) of the northern Hemisphere. The revision is based on the study of morphological and anatomical characteristics of approximately 650 specimens and their relevant type material. The specimens and type material studied are documented in drawings of microscopic structures and photos of thallus habit and apothecia. Furthermore the author presents a key to the taxa covered by this study. A statistical analysis was conducted to verify the significance of the spore characters for identification and completes this study. As a result of this revision, the following taxa are now part of the C. saxicola group: Caloplaca arnoldii (Wedd.) Zahlbr.; C. arnoldii subsp. clauzadeana Gaya; C. arnoldii subsp. nana Gaya; C. arnoldii subsp. obliterata Gaya; C. arnoldiiconfusa Gaya & Nav.-Ros.; C. biatorina (A. Massal.) J. Steiner; C. decipiens (Arnold) Blomb. & Forssell; C. pseudofulgensia Gaya & Nav.-Ros.; C. pusilla (A. Massal.) Zahlbr.; C. rouxii Gaya, Nav.-Ros. & Llimona; C. saxicola (Hoffm.) Nordin; and C. schistidii (Anzi) Zahlbr.
