Book Synopsis Apoptosis in Cardiac Biology by : Heribert Schunkert
Download or read book Apoptosis in Cardiac Biology written by Heribert Schunkert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apoptosis or programmed cell death is increasingly considered to be a major factor in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease. In patients with heart failure the activation of apoptosis may result in the loss of irreplaceable cardiac myocytes promoting the clinical course of the syndrome. Moreover, in the coronary arteries inflammation and apoptosis may weaken critical structures of the vessel wall leading to plaque rupture and, subsequently, to myocardial infarction. Given these deleterious consequences, it seems almost paradoxical that programmed cell death is an active process that, if initiated under physiological circumstances, is essential for both coordinated tissue growth or destruction of malignant cells. Apoptosis in Cardiac Biology, written by a team of internationally renowned researchers, gives a timely synopsis of basic mechanisms, cellular and structural targets and, finally, clinical implications of programmed cell death in the heart. The expert authors of this volume give concise overviews on general and cell-specific aspects of programmed cell death in cardiac myocytes and fibroblasts, as well as in vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells. Furthermore, novel therapeutic options arising from the outstanding pathophysiological significance of cardiac apoptosis are presented. This comprehensive review of Apoptosis in Cardiac Biology will be of interest to both clinicians and basic researchers who are active in the fields of cardiology and atherosclerosis.

Book Synopsis Cytokines, Novel Cell Death Models and Pathways in Cardiovascular Diseases by : Yuli Huang
Download or read book Cytokines, Novel Cell Death Models and Pathways in Cardiovascular Diseases written by Yuli Huang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cytokines are soluble proteins secreted by a wide variety of cells in the body, playing crucial roles in many physiological responses and are involved in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Recently, there is great progress in discoveries that some novel cytokines, including secreted frizzled-related proteins (SFRPs), adiponectin, and C1q/TNF-Related Proteins (CTRPs), can perform a protective effect in cardiometabolic diseases, heart failure and coronary heart disease. However, the mechanisms underlying the molecular and pathophysiological actions of these cytokines in CVDs are still vague. Novel mechanisms of cell death including pyroptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis, cuproptosis, and PANoptosis have been considered novel therapeutic targets for CVDs. Some cytokines have been shown to regulate the cell death pathway in the incidence and development of CVDs. Further investigations are needed to understand the link between these novel cytokines and novel cell death models and pathways in CVDs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major goals of researchers in the field of apoptosis is to identify targets for novel therapies in cancer, AIDS, and Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of the various components of the apoptotic pathways is the first step to reaching this goal. The 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Sydney Brenner (United Kingdom), H. Robert Horvitz (US) and John E. Sulston (UK) "for their discoveries concerning genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death." Cell death is a fundamental aspect of embryonic development, normal cellular turnover and maintenance of homeostasis (maintaining a stable, constant environment) on the one hand, and aging and disease on the other. This volume addresses the significant advances with the techniques that are being used to analyze cell death. This volume provides the necessary, trusted methods to carry out this research on these latest therapeutic techniques. Once researchers understand the molecular mechanisms of the apoptotic pathways, they can begin to develop new therapies Presents key methods on studying tumors and how these cancer cells evade cell death Eliminates searching through many different sources to avoid pitfalls so the same mistakes are not made over and over
Book Synopsis Magnesium in the Central Nervous System by : Robert Vink
Download or read book Magnesium in the Central Nervous System written by Robert Vink and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain is the most complex organ in our body. Indeed, it is perhaps the most complex structure we have ever encountered in nature. Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. The brain is our connection to the world around us and by governing nervous system and higher function, any disturbance induces severe neurological and psychiatric disorders that can have a devastating effect on quality of life. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. In particular, the critical role of cations, including magnesium, has become evident, even if incompletely understood at a mechanistic level. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Nonetheless, the importance of magnesium to normal central nervous system activity is self-evident given the complicated homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the concentration of this cation within strict limits essential for normal physiology and metabolism. There is also considerable accumulating evidence to suggest alterations to some brain functions in both normal and pathological conditions may be linked to alterations in local magnesium concentration. This book, containing chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field of magnesium research, brings together the latest in experimental and clinical magnesium research as it relates to the central nervous system. It offers a complete and updated view of magnesiums involvement in central nervous system function and in so doing, brings together two main pillars of contemporary neuroscience research, namely providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function, and emphasizing the connections between the molecular changes and behavior. It is the untiring efforts of those magnesium researchers who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of magnesiums role in biological systems that has inspired the collation of this volume of work.

The third section, Hypertension and Diabetes, provides molecular rationale for the pathogenesis of hypertension and diabetic cardiomyopathy, as well as highlighting the importance of hormones toward this end. A necessary resource for clinicians and researchers, this book elucidates the experimental basis of the practice of cardiology. It is the culmination of our advances in the understanding of cardiovascular molecular biology and a blueprint for the efficacious use of targeted therapies.
Book Synopsis Cardiomyocytes – Active Players in Cardiac Disease by : Klaus-Dieter Schlüter
Download or read book Cardiomyocytes – Active Players in Cardiac Disease written by Klaus-Dieter Schlüter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes our current understanding about the biology and patho-biology of cardiomyocytes and depicts common techniques for the study of these cells. The book is divided into two parts; the first part provides insight into role and function of cardiomyocytes under normal conditions and describes embryogenesis and differentiation, in the second part the role of cardiomyocytes in aging and disease is discussed and cellular responses under stress conditions illustrated. Cardiomyocytes represent the main mass of the heart, and cellular malfunction directly modifies heart function leading to subsequent heart failure. As such, cardiomyocytes are causative involved in the main reasons of heart failure, such as post-infarct remodeling, hypertensive heart disease, idiopathic heart failure, and interactions with other co-morbidities such as diabetes. On the other hand, cardiomyocytes are necessarily target of therapy. Therefore, a precise understanding of cardiomyocytes biology is a pre-requisite for proper disease treatment and evidence based medicine. The book is written for cell biologists, pharmacologists and biomedical researchers specialized in cardiac and vascular biology.
