Book Synopsis Style and Music by : Leonard B. Meyer
Download or read book Style and Music written by Leonard B. Meyer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonard Meyer proposes a theory of style and style change that relates the choices made by composers to the constraints of psychology, cultural context, and musical traditions. He explores why, out of the abundance of compositional possibilities, composers choose to replicate some patterns and neglect others. Meyer devotes the latter part of his book to a sketch-history of nineteenth-century music. He shows explicitly how the beliefs and attitudes of Romanticism influenced the choices of composers from Beethoven to Mahler and into our own time. "A monumental work. . . . Most authors concede the relation of music to its cultural milieu, but few have probed so deeply in demonstrating this interaction."—Choice "Probes the foundations of musical research precisely at the joints where theory and history fold into one another."—Kevin Korsyn, Journal of American Musicological Society "A remarkably rich and multifaceted, yet unified argument. . . . No one else could have brought off this immense project with anything like Meyer's command."—Robert P. Morgan, Music Perception "Anyone who attempts to deal with Romanticism in scholarly depth must bring to the task not only musical and historical expertise but unquenchable optimism. Because Leonard B. Meyer has those qualities in abundance, he has been able to offer fresh insight into the Romantic concept."—Donal Henahan, New York Times
Download or read book Johan Svendsen written by Finn Benestad and published by Peer Gynt Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1877 Svendsen, by then quite famous in Germany and Scandinavia, was invited to conduct a concert of his own works for King Oscar II and his guests at the royal palace in Oslo. A member of the orchestra later described the event: "It was an unpleasant, bitterly cold forenoon. . . . The musicians were not in very good spirits. . . . Then Svendsen jumped up on the cloth-bedecked conductor's platform and said in an authoritative voice: 'Gentlemen, when the royal entourage comes into this room, there is just one king, and that is - me.'" In 1883 he became musical director of the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen and during the ensuing years guest conducted virtually all of the major orchestras of Europe.
Book Synopsis A Composer's World by : Paul Hindemith
Download or read book A Composer's World written by Paul Hindemith and published by Schott Music. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book aims to be a guide through the little universe which is the working place of the man who writes music. As such it talks predominantly to the layman, although the expert composer may also find some stimulation in it... From the center of basic theory our discussion will spread out into all the realms of experience which border the technical aspect on composing, such as aesthetics, sociology, philosphy and so on... We must be grateful that with our art we have been placed halfway between science and religion, enjoying equally the advantages of exactitude in thinking... and of the unlimeted world of faith. Paul Hindemith, from the preface
