Book excerpt: Can the authentic words and deeds of Jesus identified by the Jesus Seminar furnish a sufficient basis for a credible profile of the Jesus of history? That is the challenge faced by the contributors to this volume. Their efforts have resulted in a unique collection of studied impressions of Jesus. Here readers will see not Jesus the icon of myth and creed, but a provocative young man of first-century Palestine whose vision and determination to live the vision gave birth to a new form of faith and changed the course of history.

Book excerpt: God needs people who are filled with the Holy Spirit, who are worried about their own will or future, and who have adopted the character of the Lord Jesus. These people need to think like He thinks, speak like He speaks, behave like He behaves, and feel like He feels. These people must embrace their faith in the Lord Jesus in order to be tools in God's hands and reveal His character to the world. The Lord Jesus said that many are called but few are chosen. But who is chosen. But who is chosen? How are they identified? Why were anointed men of the past different from men today? In The Profile of a Man of God, Bishop Macedo tries to answer these and many other questions based on what he has seen in the Work of God and, above all, in His Word.

Book excerpt: What kind of man was Jesus Christ? A close examination of the Gospels in their historic and religious context, Alan Watson argues, reveals St. Mark's text as the most plausible account of how Jesus saw himself and how he was perceived by his contemporaries. Finding in Mark that Jesus felt himself beyond the law, basically apolitical, hostile to dogma, and deliberately incomprehensible to his followers and enemies, Watson concludes that Jesus was essentially a cult leader - a charismatic individual who demanded personal faith from his followers with little regard to the consistency or content of his message. This book will be of value to New Testament scholars, clergy, and those interested in biblical scholarship and interpretation.

Book excerpt: Putting on Christ is a roadmap of our heroic journey to Spiritual Rebirth, also referenced in the holy writ as "the gate" that leads to eternal life. This gate is the First Comforter which is received and initiated through a "baptism of fire" and manifestation of the Lord's Spirit. The Savior said, "Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able" (Luke 13:24). For the true seeker and truth seeker, Putting On Christ may prove a valuable guide for the journey along this straight and narrow path which leads to obtaining the knowledge of God on the level as if we had seen Him. When we receive this knowledge, we will have been healed and cleansed by Christ Himself of our sins, vices, and spiritual wounds . This knowledge then opens the door to "obtain all other things pertaining to life and godliness" (Lectures On Faith 7:18). Putting On Christ includes the stories of nine people who were born of the Spirit or born of God in our latter day-six of whom are personally known to me. These nine have obtained the same knowledge-even the perfect knowledge as to God's reality. This experiential knowledge obtained is on par with many who have entered God's Presence through a near-death experience. In either scenario, one can never be the same thereafter. Each will have received "a mighty change" or conversion of the heart towards God. This same knowledge is available to all who have come under heavenly contract with God through the ordinances by proper authority. The Lectures on Faith teach that "whatsoever constitutes the salvation of one will constitute the salvation of every creature which will be saved" (Lectures on Faith, 7:9). Jesus said to Nicodemus: "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). Being born of the Spirit is much more than receiving the Father's promise through "confirmation" after being baptized by water. There is a broken-hearted covenant and cry of the soul we must each make in the depths of repentance, performed in complete surrender, having a committed willingness to do His will in all things thereafter. Once these and other conditions are met, the fulfillment of the Father's promise can then be made experientially "real" for us in our lives-unto the praise and glory of God. This is when we transition from the knowledge about God to the actual, perfect knowledge of God. Indeed, this is salvation. The path is real and He is coming. Waste no time. -Steven Anthony Bishop LDS Author

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALL CHRISTIANS are called to be disciples, yet there are many paths of discipleship. Having models of discipleship is essential to discovering our own unique paths as followers of Christ. Profiles in Discipleship explores twelve "images" or types of Christian discipleship that have guided the thought and action of two dozen influential figures in the Christian tradition. Combining history, theology, and spirituality, the book draws upon the richness of the Christian tradition to shed light on the crucial question of how to live a life of faithful Christian discipleship in today's world. The author presents profiles of twenty-four exemplars of Christian discipleship from the early church to the present day, including Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christians. Among the remarkable men and women whose fives of discipleship are profiled in this book are soldiers and peacemakers, servants and liberators, and artists and protest poets. In studying the lives of these Christians who persevered in discipleship despite their many faults, readers will be inspired to look into their own souls and cultivate the seeds of discipleship there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.

Book excerpt: The book consists primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence (for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"), and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.

This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can you really THINK, ACT, and BE like Jesus? Pastor Randy Frazee believes there are thirty key beliefs, practices, and virtues that help define what Jesus referred to as the two great commandments: to love God and to love others. The Christian Life Profile Assessment Workbook is designed to help you asses where you are in relationship to these beliefs, practices, and virtues. Your responses will help you answer the questions "how am I doing?" and "where do I need to grow?" After you identify areas in which you would like to grow, the workbook provides suggestions and plans to help you realize that growth, such as reading books, memorizing Scripture, attending a seminar, engaging with a mentor, or taking part in a new spiritual discipline. The Christian Life Profile journey is best experienced in a small group community that seeks to encourage, pray for, and hold each other accountable for progress. The goal is to take the profile again, one year later, to monitor the progress you make in your journey. The Christian Life Profile Assessment Workbook is also designed for use alongside the Believe product group in order to enhance the church-wide experience.
