Book excerpt: This report uses data from the 1995-96 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study to profile undergraduates who were enrolled in U.S. postsecondary institutions in the academic year 1995-96. The report begins with an essay that explores the extent to which undergraduates work while they are in school. This essay found that 79 percent of undergraduates reported working while in school; half worked to help pay for their education and 29 percent considered themselves primarily employees who were also taking classes. Working students were employed an average of 25 hours per week, with 20 percent of full-time students also working full-time. Working students noted that working limited their class schedules, and about 25 percent reported that work adversely affected their academic performance. A negative effect was also found between work and one-year persistence. Students who worked fewer hours were more likely than those who worked more hours to borrow to pay for their educations. The report's data tables are grouped into those on the essay's topic; supplemental data about work; enrollment and attendance; degree program, field of study, and grade point average; student characteristics; financial aid; and educational aspirations and community service. (Appendix contains a glossary, technical notes, and methodology information.)

It relies on data from the 1992-93 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, third in a series conducted by the Department of Education. The report begins with an essay that explores the extent to which undergraduates have outside responsibilities and enrollment patterns that increase their risk of not attaining a degree or postsecondary certificate. Following the essay, a compendium of tables provides comprehensive information about enrollment patterns, programs of study, student characteristics, financial aid receipt and employment, students' educational aspirations, and their community service participation. Not since the 1970s has the typical postsecondary student been a recent high school graduate enrolled full-time at a four-year school, and working toward a Bachelor's degree. On the contrary, such students represented only about one-third of undergraduates enrolled in 1992-93. The first section of the compendium contains detailed risk factor tables, and the remaining sections are marked to highlight topic findings. (Contains 9 text tables, 8 figures, and 58 tables in the compendium.) (SLD)

Book excerpt: From 1995-96 to 2007-08, the number of students enrolled in undergraduate education in the United States grew from about 16.7 million to 21 million. These Web Tables provide information on undergraduates during the 1995-96, 1999-2000, 2003-04, and 2007-08 academic years. Estimates are presented for all undergraduates and for undergraduates who attended public 2- and 4-year, private nonprofit, and for-profit institutions by student and enrollment characteristics, hours worked while enrolled, and community service activities. The tables are grouped into three sections. Section 1 presents estimates by selected student characteristics. The tables look at undergraduates' enrollment by age, gender, race/ethnicity, dependency status, marital status and parenthood, income, citizenship, type of high school attended, and parent education. Section 2 focuses on undergraduates' postsecondary enrollment and attendance. The tables display estimates by institution and program level, attendance intensity, in-state attendance, participation in distance education, remedial coursetaking, and attendance at more than one institution. Undergraduate major fields of study are presented for undergraduates who attended public and nonprofit 4-year institutions or were in an associate's degree program at a public 2-year institution. Section 3 looks at undergraduates' work and community service. The tables provide information about students' work intensity while enrolled, average and median hours worked per week, primary role as a student or an employee, participation in community service activities, and the average and median hours volunteered per month. A glossary is included. (Contains 30 tables and 2 endnotes.).

Book excerpt: This report examines the characteristics and first-year behaviors of beginning postsecondary students entering public 2-year, public 4-year, and private, not-for-profit 4-year institutions of higher education, based on data derived from the 1995-96 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. The report begins with an essay that describes the characteristics of beginning students in each sector. Among findings are the following: (1) public 2-year institution entrants are more likely than those entering 4-year institutions to be older, have independent financial aid status, plan to complete a lower level of postsecondary education, and have lower scores on college admission tests; (2) freshmen entering private not-for-profit 4-year institutions are more likely that those at 4-year public institutions to have families with higher incomes, to have higher college admission test scores, to attend full-time, and to have more and differently packaged financial aid; and (3) freshmen at 2-year institutions are more likely to interrupt their enrollment before the end of their first year. The essay is followed by a compendium of tables that provides comprehensive information about enrollment, academic activity, background characteristics, financial aid, employment, educational plans, life goals, institutional involvement, and community involvement. A glossary and technical notes are appended. (DB)
