Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report the Declining Enrolment Working Group describes the challenges declining enrolment poses to school boards -- primarily reduced funding, which often leads to reductions in education programming, staffing, and other supports for students. It presents enrolment trends in Ontario, a summary of the consultations and research of the working group, and its recommendations. The recommendations focus on four strategic activities: enrolment-based planning; dialogue and partnerships; e-learning and alternative program delivery; and a more effective funding formula. These are presented as ways in which Ontario's elementary and secondary education community can continue to improve student achievement while addressing the impacts of declining enrolment.--Includes text from document.

Book excerpt: In 1980, the Ontario Ministry of education published "Issues and Directions," a set of initiatives drafted in response to the effects of declining school enrollments in Ontario. This publication is a retrospective report, looking back at the initiatives set out in "Issues and Directions" and reporting on their results as of March 1984. After a brief introductory section, the remaining six sections are organized according to the major groupings of information in "Issues and Directions": (1) educational goals, program organization, and curriculum; (2) educational finance, operating grants, and school accommodation measures; (3) the teaching profession, teacher education, certification, and professional development; (4) governance and administration; (5) French-language elementary and secondary education; and (6) anticipating and preparing for the future. Within each section, results are grouped by topic. Summary tables have been included to facilitate the linking of initiative results with the two- and three-starred items of "Issues and Directions." A list of references is provided, along with a guide to acronyms. (TE)

Book Synopsis Narratives in the Making by : Mary Beattie
Download or read book Narratives in the Making written by Mary Beattie and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Corktown Community High School in Toronto, importance is placed on the education of the whole person. An alternative secondary school, it emphasizes the development of self-knowledge and responsiveness to others, creative and critical thought, and connectedness through the self, the school community, and society. Narratives in the Making is based on a research project carried out at the school as part of a large scale national research study, The Exemplary Schools Project. Corktown (a pseudonym) was selected as a participant in this study because of its unusually high rate of student retention, student engagement, achievement, and success. Using narrative accounts of classroom and school practices, profiles of teachers and students, and language that is accessible to both practitioners and academics, Mary Beattie provides insights and explanations of the meaning of success as it is understood by Corktown teachers, students, parents, alumni, and school administrators. She shows how the whole person concept is incorporated into the school environment, and why relationships are at the heart of teaching and learning.
