Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, Vol. 1 of 2 The American edition of the Life and Letters of Thomas H mm: Huxley calls for a few words by way of preface, for there existed a particular relationship between the English writer and his transatlantic readers. From the time that his Lay Sermons was published his essays found in the United States an eager audience, who appreciated above all things his directness and honesty of purpose and the unflinching spirit in which he pursued the truth. Whether or not, as some affirm, the American public discovered Mr. Herbert Spencer, they responded at once to the influence of the younger evolutionary writer, whose wide and exact knowledge of nature was but a stepping - stone to his interest in human life and its prob lems. And when, a few years later, after more than one invitation, he came to lecture in the United States and made himself personally known to his many readers, it was this widespread response to his influence which made his wel come comparable, as was said at the time, to a royal progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, Vol. 2 of 3 With the year 1870 comes another turning-point in Huxley's career. From his return to England in 1850 till 1854 he had endured four years of hard struggle, of hope deferred; his reputation as a zoologist had been established before his arrival, and was more than confirmed by his personal energy and power. When at length settled in the professorship at Jermyn Street, he was so far from thinking himself more than a beginner who had learned to work in one corner of the field of knowledge, still needing deep research into all kindred subjects in order to know the true bearings of his own little portion, that he treated the next six years simply as years of further apprenticeship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Huxley and His Work: From the Smithsonian Report for 1895, Pages 759-779 (With Plate LXXIV) The blow thus dealt against the Owenian archetype was a serious one, and it was nearly coincident with the growing adoption of the doctrine of evolution and the overthrow of the doctrine of types and patterns. At any rate, the Old idea of the vertebration of the skull became an idea of the past. Owen continued to preach it, but his disciples abandoned it, and he was soon left without a single notable follower. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Memoirs of Thomas Henry Huxley, Vol. 2 of 4 In a lecture given by Mr. Faraday at the Royal Institution on the 7th of June, 1850, and briefly reported in the 'athenaeum' and Literary Gazette' for the same month, it was shown that when two pieces of ice, at 32° Fahr., with moistened surfaces, were placed in contact, they became cemented together by the freezing of the film of water between them. When the ice was below and therefore dry, no adhesion took place between the pieces. Mr. Faraday referred, in illustration of this point, to the well-known experiment of making a snowball. In frosty weather the dry particles of ice will scarcely cohere, but when the snow is in a thawing condition, it may be squeezed into a hard compact mass. On one of the warmest days of last July, when the thermometer stood at upwards of 80° Fahr. In the shade and above 100° in the sun, a pile of ice-blocks was observed by one of us in a Shop window, and he thought it interesting to examine whether the pieces were united at their places of contact. Laying hold of the topmost block, the whole heap, consisting of several large lumps, was lifted bodily out of its vessel. Even at this high temperature the pieces were frozen together at the places of contact, though the ice all round these places had been melted away, leaving the lumps in some cases united by slender cylinders of the substance. A similar experiment may be made in water as hot as the hands can bear two pieces of ice will freeze together, and sometimes continue so frozen in the hot water, until, as in the case above mentioned, the melting of the ice around the points Of contact leaves the pieces united by slender columns of the substance. Book excerpt: American Addresses, with a Lecture on the Study of Biology by Thomas Henry Huxley THE THREE HYPOTHESES RESPECTING THE HISTORY OF NATURE. We live in and form part of a system of things of immense diversity and perplexity, which we call Nature; and it is a matter of the deepest interest to all of us that we should form just conceptions of the constitution of that system and of its past history. With relation to this universe, man is, in extent, little more than a mathematical point; in duration but a fleeting shadow; he is a mere reed shaken in the winds of force. But, as Pascal long ago remarked, although a mere reed, he is a thinking reed; and in virtue of that wonderful capacity of thought, he has the power of framing for himself a symbolic conception of the universe, which, although doubtless highly imperfect and inadequate as a picture of the great whole, is yet sufficient to serve him as a chart for the guidance of his practical affairs. It has taken long ages of toilsome and often fruitless labour to enable man to look steadily at the shifting scenes of the phantasmagoria of Nature, to notice what is fixed among her fluctuations, and what is regular among her apparent irregularities; and it is only comparatively lately, within the last few centuries, that the conception of a universal order and of a definite course of things, which we term the course of Nature, has emerged. The essay is an opinionated discussion covering a wide range of subjects reflecting Huxley's views towards society at that time. He puts forward a number of predictions, many of which turned out to be true up to 60 years later. A consistent theme throughout the essay is Huxley's preference towards a decentralised society. When a boy of twelve, his son and biographer writes, he used to light his candle before dawn, pin a blanket around his shoulders, and sit up in bed to read Hutton's Geology. His tastes were scientific but he did not confine his reading to science. He was still a child when he read Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy of the Unconditioned, but his comment on it is not that of a child: It stamped on my mind the strong conviction that on even the most solemn and important of questions, men are apt to take cunning phrases for an swets.
