Book Synopsis The Measurement of Productive Efficiency by : Harold O. Fried
Download or read book The Measurement of Productive Efficiency written by Harold O. Fried and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-04-22 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on measuring and explaining producer performance. The authors view performance as a function of the state of technology and economic efficiency, with the former defining a frontier relation between inputs and outputs; the former incorporating waste and misallocation relative to this frontier. They show that insights can be gained by allowing for the possibility of a divergence between the economic objective and actual performance, and by associating this inefficiency with causal variables subject to managerial or policy influence. Derived from a series of lectures held on techniques and applications of the three approaches to the construction of production frontiers and measure of efficiency, this work will be an essential reference to scholars of a variety of disciplines who are involved with quantitative methods or policy.

This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Harold Fried, et al. published The Measurement of Productive Efficiency: Techniques and Applications with OUP in 1993, the book received a great deal of professional interest for its accessible treatment of the rapidly growing field of efficiency and productivity analysis. The first several chapters, providing the background, motivation, and theoretical foundations for this topic, were the most widely recognized. In this tight, direct update, these same editors have compiled over ten years of the most recent research in this changing field, and expanded on those seminal chapters. The book will guide readers from the basic models to the latest, cutting-edge extensions, and will be reinforced by references to classic and current theoretical and applied research. It is intended for professors and graduate students in a variety of fields, ranging from economics to agricultural economics, business administration, management science, and public administration. It should also appeal to public servants and policy makers engaged in business performance analysis or regulation.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Insurance by : Georges Dionne
Download or read book Handbook of Insurance written by Georges Dionne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970's, the research agenda in insurance was dominated by optimal insurance coverage, security design, and equilibrium under conditions of imperfect information. The 1980's saw a growth of theoretical developments including non-expected utility, price volatility, retention capacity, the pricing and design of insurance contracts in the presence of multiple risks, and the liability insurance crisis. The empirical study of information problems, financial derivatives, and large losses due to catastrophic events dominated the research agenda in the 1990's. The Handbook of Insurance provides a single reference source on insurance for professors, researchers, graduate students, regulators, consultants, and practitioners, that reviews the research developments in insurance and its related fields that have occurred over the last thirty years. The book starts with the history and foundations of insurance theory and moves on to review asymmetric information, risk management and insurance pricing, and the industrial organization of insurance markets. The book ends with life insurance, pensions, and economic security. Each chapter has been written by a leading authority in insurance, all contributions have been peer reviewed, and each chapter can be read independently of the others.
Book Synopsis Competition and Techincal Change in the U.S. Telephone Industry by : Nakil Sung
Download or read book Competition and Techincal Change in the U.S. Telephone Industry written by Nakil Sung and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997. While local telephone companies still maintain their monopolistic position, rapid technological advance in telecommunications is destroying the established market structure in the local telephone industry. The U.S. Telecommunications Act of 1996 aimed at eliminating any legal barrier which has suppressed technically feasible local competition. This study attempts to provide pro-competitive evidence on the technological or cost structure of the U.S. local telephone industry. In particular, the study presents strong evidence against cost subadditivity of local telephone companies and shows that local telephone companies have been isolated from the disciplinary effects of competition in comparison with their competitive counterparts. The study not only has policy implications for entry and competition in local telephone markets, but also provides a new approach to the measurement of embodied technical change.

Book Synopsis Output Measurement in the Service Sectors by : Zvi Griliches
Download or read book Output Measurement in the Service Sectors written by Zvi Griliches and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the fall in overall productivity growth in the United States and other developed countries related to the rising share of the service sectors in the economy? Since services represent well over half of the U.S. gross national product, it is also important to ask whether these sectors have had a slow rate of growth, as this would act as a major drag on the productivity growth of the overall economy and on its competitive performance. In this timely volume, leading experts from government and academia argue that faulty statistics have prevented a clear understanding of these issues.
