Book excerpt: Ultra-Cold Neutrons is a complete, self-contained introduction and review of the field of ultra-cold neutron (UCN) physics. Over the last two decades, developments in UCN technology include the storage of UCN in material and magnetic bottles for time periods limited only by the beta decay rate of the free neutron. This capability has opened up the possibility of a wide range of applications in the fields of both fundamental and condensed state physics. The book explores some of these applications, such as the search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron that constitutes the most sensitive test of time reversal invariance yet devised. The book is suitable as an introduction to the field for research students, as a useful compendium of results and techniques for researchers, and is of general interest to nonspecialists in other areas of physics such as neutron, atomic, and fundamental physics and neutron scattering.

Book Synopsis The Physics of Ultracold Neutrons by : Vladimir Kazimirovich Ignatovich
Download or read book The Physics of Ultracold Neutrons written by Vladimir Kazimirovich Ignatovich and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slow-moving, low-energy ultracold neutrons provide an important tool for investigations in physics. They can be kept in hermetically sealed vessels for up to 15 minutes before they decay, allowing researchers sufficient time to observe the action of very weak fields and yielding valuable insights into neutron properties. In addition to describing how these particles are produced, detected, and analyzed, this book provides coverage of improvements in the techniques of ultracold neutron science--with information on how physicists may increase storage times--and explores ways they can be used for fundamental and applied research. Areas of study reported on include the determination of an upper limit to the electric dipole moment of neutrons, improved measurements of decay time, and new approaches to diffraction and diffusion theory. Although the text avoids mathematical detail, this is covered in appendices at chapter ends. The material is intended for specialists in neutron physics.
Book Synopsis Patterns of Symmetry Breaking by : Henryk Arodz
Download or read book Patterns of Symmetry Breaking written by Henryk Arodz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conceptofspontaneous symmetry breaking plays a fundamental role in contemporary physics. It is essential for the description of degenerate ground states, massless modes, and topological defects. Examples are abundant in condensed matter physics, atomic and particle physics, as well as in astro physics and cosmology. In fact, spontaneous symmetry breaking can be re garded as a cornerstone ofa whole branch ofphysics which intersects the above mentioned traditionally distinct fields. In the year 2000 the European Science Foundation (ESF) started the Pro gramme "Cosmology in the Laboratory" (COSLAB), with the goal to search for and to develop analogies betweencondensed matterphysics, particle physics, and cosmology. Not surprisingly, spontaneous symmetry breaking is among the most useful notions in that endeavour. It has been decided that in the sec ond year of the Programme a School should be held in order to work out and deliver to a wide audience of students synthetic overviews of achievements and of current research topics of COSLAB. This idea has been supported by the Scientific and Environmental Affairs Division of NATO by including the School in the renowned series of its Advanced Study Institutes. The School, entitled" Patterns of Symmetry Breaking", was held in Cracow during 16-28 September 2002. It gathered 17 lecturers and about 60 students. The present volume contains notes ofmost of the lectures from that School. We hope that of the physics of spon it will convey to the reader the breadth and the beauty taneous symmetry breaking.

Book Synopsis Polarization Dynamics In Nuclear And Particle Physics - Proceedings Of The 2nd Adriatico Research Conference by : Asim Orhan Barut
Download or read book Polarization Dynamics In Nuclear And Particle Physics - Proceedings Of The 2nd Adriatico Research Conference written by Asim Orhan Barut and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-12-22 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the four years since the first Trieste Meeting on Spin and Polarization Dynamics in Nuclear and Particle Physics, considerable progress has been made both in the theoretical and experimental aspects of this field. The polarization phenomena have given rise to many more detailed and crucial tests which enhance our understanding of particle physics. New information can also be uncovered in the process of conducting the various tests. For this reason, considerable efforts have been put into the present and future accelerators to extend the experimental data to measure polarization asymmetries for both polarized targets and polarized scattered and produced particles. The 2nd Adriatico Research Conference held in January 1992 brought together both theorists and experimentalists who presented many new findings. These findings have been compiled into this compact volume to give a complete picture of the wide range of theoretical and experimental problems, difficulties, results, prospects and hopes which are at the core of particle physics studies today. It will be a useful guide for the present status of polarization phenomena and their fundamental implications.

Book Synopsis Ultracold Neutrons by : Albert Steyerl
Download or read book Ultracold Neutrons written by Albert Steyerl and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultracold Neutrons is a guide to a fascinating topic. It describes how a simple new idea in experimental neutron physics has changed the landscape of what is often called 'fundamental physics.' Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) are neutrons moving at the low speed of a bicycle rider. They were produced for the first time 50 years ago (in 1968) and are distinguished from ordinary neutrons with much higher energies by their ability to be confined in 'neutron bottles' for durations up to several hundred seconds. This is possible since they are reflected back and forth from the container walls many thousands of times with very little loss. As a result of these long observation times, their properties and interactions with the environment can be studied with superb precision.Directed towards a general readership, this book is an excellent introduction to a field of research that is not highly specialized but touches on many aspects of our physical world, classical as well as quantum mechanical.
Book Synopsis Fundamental Physics with Pulsed Neutron Beams by : Christopher R. Gould
Download or read book Fundamental Physics with Pulsed Neutron Beams written by Christopher R. Gould and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low energy neutron beams are used to address many questions in nuclear physics, particle physics and astrophysics. The scientific issues include elucidating the nature of time reversal noninvariance; understanding the origin of the baryon asymmetry in the Universe; describing the weak interaction between quarks and between nucleons; understanding the origin of the elements in stellar and big bang nucleosynthesis. This book summarizes how spallation neutron sources work and discuss the advantages of pulsed beams in reducing systematic errors in precision measurements. It also describes recent breakthroughs in ultracold neutron production, together with the physics that will be addressed by the new generation of intense neutron sources.
