This book was released on 1980 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ellipsoid algorithm associated with Shor, Khachiyan and others has certain theoretical properties that suggest its use as a linear programming algorithm. Some of the practical difficulties are investigated here. A variant of the ellipsoid update is first developed, to take advantage of the range constraints that often occur in linear programs (i.e., constraints of the form l
Book Synopsis Sparse Matrix Computations by : James R. Bunch
Download or read book Sparse Matrix Computations written by James R. Bunch and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sparse Matrix Computations is a collection of papers presented at the 1975 Symposium by the same title, held at Argonne National Laboratory. This book is composed of six parts encompassing 27 chapters that contain contributions in several areas of matrix computations and some of the most potential research in numerical linear algebra. The papers are organized into general categories that deal, respectively, with sparse elimination, sparse eigenvalue calculations, optimization, mathematical software for sparse matrix computations, partial differential equations, and applications involving sparse matrix technology. This text presents research on applied numerical analysis but with considerable influence from computer science. In particular, most of the papers deal with the design, analysis, implementation, and application of computer algorithms. Such an emphasis includes the establishment of space and time complexity bounds and to understand the algorithms and the computing environment. This book will prove useful to mathematicians and computer scientists.

Book Synopsis Practical Methods of Optimization by : R. Fletcher
Download or read book Practical Methods of Optimization written by R. Fletcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully describes optimization methods that are currently most valuable in solving real-life problems. Since optimization has applications in almost every branch of science and technology, the text emphasizes their practical aspects in conjunction with the heuristics useful in making them perform more reliably and efficiently. To this end, it presents comparative numerical studies to give readers a feel for possibile applications and to illustrate the problems in assessing evidence. Also provides theoretical background which provides insights into how methods are derived. This edition offers revised coverage of basic theory and standard techniques, with updated discussions of line search methods, Newton and quasi-Newton methods, and conjugate direction methods, as well as a comprehensive treatment of restricted step or trust region methods not commonly found in the literature. Also includes recent developments in hybrid methods for nonlinear least squares; an extended discussion of linear programming, with new methods for stable updating of LU factors; and a completely new section on network programming. Chapters include computer subroutines, worked examples, and study questions.
Book Synopsis Large Scale Linear and Integer Optimization: A Unified Approach by : Richard Kipp Martin
Download or read book Large Scale Linear and Integer Optimization: A Unified Approach written by Richard Kipp Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook about linear and integer linear optimization. There is a growing need in industries such as airline, trucking, and financial engineering to solve very large linear and integer linear optimization problems. Building these models requires uniquely trained individuals. Not only must they have a thorough understanding of the theory behind mathematical programming, they must have substantial knowledge of how to solve very large models in today's computing environment. The major goal of the book is to develop the theory of linear and integer linear optimization in a unified manner and then demonstrate how to use this theory in a modern computing environment to solve very large real world problems. After presenting introductory material in Part I, Part II of this book is de voted to the theory of linear and integer linear optimization. This theory is developed using two simple, but unifying ideas: projection and inverse projec tion. Through projection we take a system of linear inequalities and replace some of the variables with additional linear inequalities. Inverse projection, the dual of this process, involves replacing linear inequalities with additional variables. Fundamental results such as weak and strong duality, theorems of the alternative, complementary slackness, sensitivity analysis, finite basis the orems, etc. are all explained using projection or inverse projection. Indeed, a unique feature of this book is that these fundamental results are developed and explained before the simplex and interior point algorithms are presented.
Book Synopsis Milestones in Matrix Computation : The selected works of Gene H. Golub with commentaries by : Raymond Chan
Download or read book Milestones in Matrix Computation : The selected works of Gene H. Golub with commentaries written by Raymond Chan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-02-22 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text presents and discusses some of the most influential papers in Matrix Computation authored by Gene H. Golub, one of the founding fathers of the field. The collection of 21 papers is divided into five main areas: iterative methods for linear systems, solution of least squares problems, matrix factorizations and applications, orthogonal polynomials and quadrature, and eigenvalue problems. Commentaries for each area are provided by leading experts: Anne Greenbaum, Ake Bjorck, Nicholas Higham, Walter Gautschi, and G. W. (Pete) Stewart. Comments on each paper are also included by the original authors, providing the reader with historical information on how the paper came to be written and under what circumstances the collaboration was undertaken. Including a brief biography and facsimiles of the original papers, this text will be of great interest to students and researchers in numerical analysis and scientific computation.
