Book Synopsis Topics in Environmental Economics by : M. Boman
Download or read book Topics in Environmental Economics written by M. Boman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-07-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows, we believe, the breadth and the complexity of issues that econo mists now tackle in their analysis of the connections between the ecosystem and the economic system. The book offers contributions to such disparate issues as the value of preserving the wolf in Sweden and the proper distribution of permits in an effective global warming treaty. Because these questions remain at the fore front of important resource allocation problems that need to be confronted, it is only appropriate that they are represented in a book that intends to paint a picture, albeit certainly incomplete, of the vibrant and progressing state of environmental economics. The contributions cover five areas of environmental economics: policy instru ments, cost-benefit analysis, cost-efficiency, contingent valuation and experimental economics. Each area is worthy of a book by itself, but here we have made a point of focusing on problems that seem directly applicable to the pressing policy issues of today. Thus, the contributors address topics that are directly relevant to interna tional and regional policy making, as well as those that are linked to development of supporting information systems (e.g. resource accounting). In addition, the con tributions seek to provide high-level applications of measurement techniques as well as pertinent critiques of these methods. The next section provides a summary overview of the book.
Book Synopsis The Image Trap by : M. S. S. Pandian
Download or read book The Image Trap written by M. S. S. Pandian and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Image Trap analyses the phenomenon of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), the legendary film star-cum-politician of Tamil Nadu, as a modern-day political myth. This book offers fascinating details about the extent to which MGR was successful in creating a stereotypical cinematic persona, and what repercussions it had on Tamil Nadu. Delineating the cultural elements that were meticulously mobilised to constitute MGR’s on-screen image, it analyses the popularity he enjoyed among the poor whose interests he constantly violated. This is done by means of what Pandian termed as constructed biographies which are popular narratives that ingeniously present the cinematic as real. It brings out the interface and interplay between the media and political processes. A blend of essay writing, political rhetoric and scholarship, the book features the complete filmography of MGR and is a must for understanding the contemporary politics of the state.
Book Synopsis The Ecological Theater and the Evolutionary Play by : George Evelyn Hutchinson
Download or read book The Ecological Theater and the Evolutionary Play written by George Evelyn Hutchinson and published by New Haven : Yale University Press. This book was released on 1965 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this delightful collection of essays, the author of The Enchanted Voyage and The Itinerant Ivory Tower turns his attention to the influence of environment on evolution. His discussion of the nature of the terrestrial environment we know leads to an account of possible ecological conditions on other bodies in the universe. Mr. Hutchinson also deals specifically with some influences on man's evolution, emphasizing the extremely recondite nature of these forces. One of the other pieces looks at the relationship of natural beauty to works of art, particularly in the context of comparisons between natural history museums and art galleries. The final essay, "The Cream in the Gooseberry Fool," is an entertaining account of an English country clergyman's work with the European magpie moth, which resulted in one of the most significant early discoveries in genetics. The treatment throughout requires no technical learning, though the most important and modern theoretical results are cited in the footnotes.

Download or read book Productivity and innovation written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the section on the link between innovation and productivity the paper surveys the representative empirical studies of this relationship on industry and enterprise level, including the evidence on private and social returns on investment in R&D and innovation in Canada and abroad. [...] A revision of Statistics Canada productivity measurement methods in the early 2000s reduced the methodological differences that rendered problematic comparison of Canadian productivity levels and growth with that of the U. S. and other industrialized countries.2 Over the 1994-2000 period, the Gross Domestic Product per capita in Canada averaged about 83% of GDP per capita in the United States. [...] While the MFP continued to grow in the U. S. even after bursting of the dot.com bubble and the ensuing economic slowdown, it reversed its trend in Canada and ceased to grow, as can be seen in Figure 2. According to their figures the level of MFP in Canada relative to the U. S. decreased from 0.71 in 2000 to 0.66 in 2004. [...] At the beginning of the period Canada's R&D/GDP has been less than half of the U. S. level in the total economy, and less than one quarter of the U. S. level in manufacturing. [...] Economic growth and productivity The basics of economic growth process can be illustrated10 by the following simplified relationships: Output is function of the quantity of resources used in production and the productivity (efficiency) of the production process Output = resources used in production.
Book Synopsis Technology Use and Industrial Transformation by : John R. Baldwin
Download or read book Technology Use and Industrial Transformation written by John R. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines technology use in Canada's manufacturing sector and how a set of technology-using manufacturing establishments performed relative to non-users. Data originates from a recent Statistics Canada survey, asking manufacturing firms about their use of 22 advanced manufacturing technologies, and panel data taken from the Census of Manufacturers. Results show that the use of advanced manufacturing technology is widespread, especially in large firms, that multiple-technology use is the norm, and that technologies are generally combined within, as opposed to across, production stages. The technology revolution has been felt more in the area of inspection and communications and less in fabrication and assembly. In terms of performance, technology-using establishments pay higher wages, enjoy higher labor productivity and are gaining market share at the expense of non-users.
Book Synopsis Measurement Issues and Behavior of Productivity Variables by : Ali Dogramaci
Download or read book Measurement Issues and Behavior of Productivity Variables written by Ali Dogramaci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a set of papers from the leading edge of current research on productivity analysis. The focus is on alternative forms of measurement, methods, and their implications. The book begins with a chapter by V. Corbo and J. de Melo comparing the effects of using different production frontier models for measuring technical efficiency when using census data. The second chapter (by H. Pesaran and R. Tarling) is a detailed analysi·s of measurement of labor and its variations over time. The next two chapters concern the measurement of capital. The first of these is written by M. F. Mohr; the second is by B. M. Fraumeni and D. W. Jorgenson. The final chapter is by I. B. Kravis, A. W. Heston, and R. Summers and concerns the behavior of productivity and service prices. Decisions for improving productivity rely upon explicit as well as implicit assumptions on how productivity is related to a variety of factors. Determining the right relationships hinges on how these factors are measured and how the models are set. This is why better understanding of measurement issues and behavior of variables related to productivity can lead more effective policies. We plan to continue in this series to present the current research of major different schools of thought in the field.

Download or read book Production Frontiers written by Rolf Fare and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a mathematical programming approach to the analysis of production frontiers and efficiency measurement. The authors construct a variety of production frontiers, and by measuring distances to them are able to develop a model of efficient producer behaviour and a taxonomy of possible types of departure from efficiency in various environments. Linear programming is used as an analytical and computational technique in order to accomplish this. The approach developed is then applied to modelling producer behaviour. By focusing on the empirical relevance of production frontiers and distances to them, and applying linear programming techniques to artificial data to illustrate the type of information they can generate, this book provides a unique study in applied production analysis. It will be of interest to scholars and students of economics and operations research, and analysts in business and government.
