Parker's "On the structure and development of the skull in the ostrich tribe". With this and other excellent papers, W.K. Parker (1866, 1869, 1875, 1876) laid the foundation for the study of the bird's skull. W.K. Parker's work was continued by T.J. Parker (1888, 1891), who investigated the skull of Apteryx. Apart from the studies of the Parkers, the most important contribution to the study of the development of the bird's skull published before 1900 is Suschkin's (1899) excellent and detailed account of Tinnunculus. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Sonies (1907) made a further contribution with his study on the development of the chondrocrania of Anas and Gallus. The first major work to appear after that of Sonies was De Beer and Barr ington's (1934) study on the segmentation and chondrification of the skull of Anas. This was an important contribution, because they not only standardized the nomenclature but also compared the avian chondrocranium with that of reptiles and mammals and discussed morphological problems on the basis of these comparisons.

Book excerpt: Is it ever appropriate to diagnose and treat oral and dental problems without knowing the full extent of the problem? With more than 50% of anatomical structures and associated pathologies located below the gingivae and unseen to the eye, that's the reality without the use of high-quality, accurately interpreted radiographs. Atlas of Dental Radiography in Dogs and Cats presents hundreds of actual radiographic images, which are clearly labeled to facilitate accurate identification of normal and abnormal features. This valuable new atlas shows you exactly how to correlate common dental conditions with radiographic signs. Radiographs are also compared side by side with actual anatomical photographs to confirm surface landmarks visible on the radiographs. Correct positioning techniques for producing diagnostic radiographs as well as helpful tips and pitfalls when obtaining quality radiographs are logically presented. This approach helps you produce consistently high-quality radiographs, sharpen your interpretive skills, and confidently treat a wide range of dental problems. - Presents the most logical and useful approach to dental and oral radiography, using actual anatomical photographs for accurate clinical correlation - Depicts original and color-labeled radiographs side-by-side for accurate identification of normal and abnormal structures - Helps both veterinarians and technicians take the best possible radiographs, interpret them accurately, make sound treatment decisions, and monitor results - Provides clear, technical guidance for taking quality radiographs and identifying artefacts and results of improper imaging technique and film development - Presents clear pictorial instructions – from 2 angles – for correct positioning of the X-ray beam and intraoral films - Offers new opportunities for expanded professional services and revenues in your practice - Provides proof of compliance with standards of care for medical record documentation, helping you legally protect yourself, your staff, and your practice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ACP, the Algebra of Communicating Processes, is an algebraic approach to the study of concurrent processes, initiated by Jan Bergstra and Jan Will em Klop in the early eighties. These proceedings comprise the contributions to ACP94, the first workshop devoted to ACP. The work shop was held at Utrecht University, 16-17 May 1994. These proceedings are meant to provide an overview of current research in the area of ACP. They contain fifteen contributions. The first one is a classical paper on ACP by J.A. Bergstra and J.W. Klop: The Algebra of Recursively Defined Processes and the Algebra of Regular Processes, Report IW 235/83, Mathematical Centre, Amsterdam, 1983. It serves as an introduction to the remainder of the proceedings and, indeed, as a general introduction to ACP. An extended abstract of this paper is published under the same title in the ICALP' 84 proceedings. Of the re maining contributions, three were submitted by the invited speakers and the others were selected by the programme committee. As for the presentations, Jos Baeten, Rob van Glabbeek, Jan Friso Groote, and Frits Vaandrager were each invited to deliver a lecture. A paper relating to Frits Vaandrager's lecture has already been submitted for publication elsewhere and is not, therefore, included in these pro ceedings. Gabriel Ciobanu, one of our guests, gave an impression of his work in an extra lecture. Furthermore, ten presentations were given on the basis of selected papers.

This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark H.A. Davis introduced the Piecewise-Deterministic Markov Process (PDMP) class of stochastic hybrid models in an article in 1984. Today it is used to model a variety of complex systems in the fields of engineering, economics, management sciences, biology, Internet traffic, networks and many more. Yet, despite this, there is very little in the way of literature devoted to the development of numerical methods for PDMDs to solve problems of practical importance, or the computational control of PDMPs. This book therefore presents a collection of mathematical tools that have been recently developed to tackle such problems. It begins by doing so through examples in several application domains such as reliability. The second part is devoted to the study and simulation of expectations of functionals of PDMPs. Finally, the third part introduces the development of numerical techniques for optimal control problems such as stopping and impulse control problems.

Book excerpt: This volume and Stochastic Processes, Physics and Geometry: New Interplays I present state-of-the-art research currently unfolding at the interface between mathematics and physics. Included are select articles from the international conference held in Leipzig (Germany) in honor of Sergio Albeverio's sixtieth birthday. The theme of the conference, "Infinite Dimensional (Stochastic) Analysis and Quantum Physics", was chosen to reflect Albeverio's wide-ranging scientific interests. The articles in these books reflect that broad range of interests and provide a detailed overview highlighting the deep interplay among stochastic processes, mathematical physics, and geometry. The contributions are written by internationally recognized experts in the fields of stochastic analysis, linear and nonlinear (deterministic and stochastic) PDEs, infinite dimensional analysis, functional analysis, commutative and noncommutative probability theory, integrable systems, quantum and statistical mechanics, geometric quantization, and neural networks. Also included are applications in biology and other areas. Most of the contributions are high-level research papers. However, there are also some overviews on topics of general interest. The articles selected for publication in these volumes were specifically chosen to introduce readers to advanced topics, to emphasize interdisciplinary connections, and to stress future research directions. Volume I contains contributions from invited speakers; Volume II contains additional contributed papers. Members of the Canadian Mathematical Society may order at the AMS member price.

This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise treatment of nonlinear noise techniques encountered in system applications is suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. The book is also a valuable reference for systems analysts and communication engineers, as it discusses the basic mathematical theories of nonlinear transformations applied to random processes encountered in communications and control systems. Prerequisites include a familiarity with statistics, probability, complex variables, and Fourier and Laplace transforms. The first five chapters present specific classes of nonlinear devices and random processes that in combination lead to closed form solutions for the statistical properties of the transformed process. Subsequent chapters address techniques based on the use of series representations, general systematic approaches to the subject of nonlinear transformations of random processes, and sampling and quantizing a random process. A helpful Appendix features notes on hypergeometric functions.
