Book excerpt: Although the origins of parallel computing go back to the last century, it was only in the 1970s that parallel and vector computers became available to the scientific community. The first of these machines-the 64 processor llliac IV and the vector computers built by Texas Instruments, Control Data Corporation, and then CRA Y Research Corporation-had a somewhat limited impact. They were few in number and available mostly to workers in a few government laboratories. By now, however, the trickle has become a flood. There are over 200 large-scale vector computers now installed, not only in government laboratories but also in universities and in an increasing diversity of industries. Moreover, the National Science Foundation's Super computing Centers have made large vector computers widely available to the academic community. In addition, smaller, very cost-effective vector computers are being manufactured by a number of companies. Parallelism in computers has also progressed rapidly. The largest super computers now consist of several vector processors working in parallel. Although the number of processors in such machines is still relatively small (up to 8), it is expected that an increasing number of processors will be added in the near future (to a total of 16 or 32). Moreover, there are a myriad of research projects to build machines with hundreds, thousands, or even more processors. Indeed, several companies are now selling parallel machines, some with as many as hundreds, or even tens of thousands, of processors.

Articles in this volume represent applied mathematics, computer science, and application aspects of parallel scientific computing. Major advances are discussed dealing with multiprocessor architectures, parallel algorithm development and analysis, parallel systems and programming languages. The optimization of the application of massively parallel architectures to real world problems will provide the impetus for the development of entirely new approaches to these technical situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Subjects and Objectives. This book is about algebraic and symbolic computation and numerical computing (with matrices and polynomials). It greatly extends the study of these topics presented in the celebrated books of the seventies, [AHU] and [BM] (these topics have been under-represented in [CLR], which is a highly successful extension and updating of [AHU] otherwise). Compared to [AHU] and [BM] our volume adds extensive material on parallel com putations with general matrices and polynomials, on the bit-complexity of arithmetic computations (including some recent techniques of data compres sion and the study of numerical approximation properties of polynomial and matrix algorithms), and on computations with Toeplitz matrices and other dense structured matrices. The latter subject should attract people working in numerous areas of application (in particular, coding, signal processing, control, algebraic computing and partial differential equations). The au thors' teaching experience at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and at the University of Pisa suggests that the book may serve as a text for advanced graduate students in mathematics and computer science who have some knowledge of algorithm design and wish to enter the exciting area of algebraic and numerical computing. The potential readership may also include algorithm and software designers and researchers specializing in the design and analysis of algorithms, computational complexity, alge braic and symbolic computing, and numerical computation.

Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of articles corresponding to some of the talks delivered at the Foundations of Computational Mathematics conference held at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro in January 1997. Some ofthe others are published in the December 1996 issue of the Journal of Complexity. Both of these publications were available and distributed at the meeting. Even in this aspect we hope to have achieved a synthesis of the mathematics and computer science cultures as well as of the disciplines. The reaction to the Park City meeting on Mathematics of Numerical Analy sis: Real Number Algorithms which was chaired by Steve Smale and had around 275 participants, was very enthusiastic. At the suggestion of Narendra Karmar mar a lunch time meeting of Felipe Cucker, Arieh Iserles, Narendra Karmarkar, Jim Renegar, Mike Shub and Steve Smale decided to try to hold a periodic meeting entitled "Foundations of Computational Mathematics" and to form an organization with the same name whose primary purpose will be to hold the meeting. This is then the first edition of FoCM as such. It has been organized around a small collection of workshops, namely - Systems of algebraic equations and computational algebraic geometry - Homotopy methods and real machines - Information-based complexity - Numerical linear algebra - Approximation and PDEs - Optimization - Differential equations and dynamical systems - Relations to computer science - Vision and related computational tools There were also twelve plenary speakers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Computer algorithms for solving linear algebraic equations: the state of the art" was held September 9-21, 1990, at II Ciocco, Barga, Italy. It was attended by 68 students (among them many well known specialists in related fields!) from the following countries: Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, UK, USA, USSR, Yugoslavia. Solving linear equations is a fundamental task in most of computational mathematics. Linear systems which are now encountered in practice may be of very large dimension and their solution can still be a challenge in terms of the requirements of accuracy or reasonable computational time. With the advent of supercomputers with vector and parallel features, algorithms which were previously formulated in a framework of sequential operations often need a completely new formulation, and algorithms that were not recommended in a sequential framework may become the best choice. The aim of the ASI was to present the state of the art in this field. While not all important aspects could be covered (for instance there is no presentation of methods using interval arithmetic or symbolic computation), we believe that most important topics were considered, many of them by leading specialists who have contributed substantially to the developments in these fields.

It is written to provide a firm understanding of the described approaches to computer scientists, engineers or other experts who have to solve real problems. The meshless solution approach is described in more detail, with a description of the required algorithms and the methods that are needed for the design of an efficient computer program. Most of the details are demonstrated on solutions of practical problems, from basic to more complicated ones. This book will be a useful tool for any reader interested in solving complex problems in real computational domains.

Book excerpt: This volume provides the proceedings of the First European Workshop on Parallel Processing Techniques for Simulation which was held at the end of October 1985. The Workshop was organized within the framework of a joint project sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities under the research part of the multiannua1 programme in the field of Data Processing aming at promoting collaborative research work in the Community. The project involved collaborative work between the Complex Systems Group of the Control Systems Centre at UMIST, the Systems Reliability Service of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and the University of Bergamo, Italy. The aim of this project was to develop decomposition coordination techniques which would be of help in the simulation of complex dynamical systems on parallel processing facilities. One of the major aims of the Workshop was to report on the results produced within the project and to try to relate these to the leading work going on in this field in other centres of excellence. With this in mind, the Proceedings Volume is split up into a number of parts corresponding to the main sessions within the Workshop programme.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is mainly devoted to some computational and algorithmic problems in finite fields such as, for example, polynomial factorization, finding irreducible and primitive polynomials, the distribution of these primitive polynomials and of primitive points on elliptic curves, constructing bases of various types and new applications of finite fields to other areas of mathematics. For completeness we in clude two special chapters on some recent advances and applications of the theory of congruences (optimal coefficients, congruential pseudo-random number gener ators, modular arithmetic, etc.) and computational number theory (primality testing, factoring integers, computation in algebraic number theory, etc.). The problems considered here have many applications in Computer Science, Cod ing Theory, Cryptography, Numerical Methods, and so on. There are a few books devoted to more general questions, but the results contained in this book have not till now been collected under one cover. In the present work the author has attempted to point out new links among different areas of the theory of finite fields. It contains many very important results which previously could be found only in widely scattered and hardly available conference proceedings and journals. In particular, we extensively review results which originally appeared only in Russian, and are not well known to mathematicians outside the former USSR.
