Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the key concepts, principles and implementation options for creating high-assurance cloud computing solutions. The guide starts with a broad technical overview and basic introduction to cloud computing, looking at the overall architecture of the cloud, client systems, the modern Internet and cloud computing data centers. It then delves into the core challenges of showing how reliability and fault-tolerance can be abstracted, how the resulting questions can be solved, and how the solutions can be leveraged to create a wide range of practical cloud applications. The author’s style is practical, and the guide should be readily understandable without any special background. Concrete examples are often drawn from real-world settings to illustrate key insights. Appendices show how the most important reliability models can be formalized, describe the API of the Isis2 platform, and offer more than 80 problems at varying levels of difficulty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Brian Randell on the occasion of his 75th birthday, contains a total of 37 refereed contributions. Two biographical papers are followed by the six invited papers that were presented at the conference 'Dependable and Historic Computing: The Randell Tales', held during April 7-8, 2011 at Newcastle University, UK. The remaining contributions are authored by former scientific colleagues of Brian Randell. The papers focus on the core of Brian Randell’s work: the development of computing science and the study of its history. Moreover, his wider interests are reflected and so the collection comprises papers on software engineering, storage fragmentation, computer architecture, programming languages and dependability. There is even a paper that echoes Randell’s love of maps. After an early career with English Electric and then with IBM in New York and California, Brian Randell joined Newcastle University. His main research has been on dependable computing in all its forms, especially reliability, safety and security aspects, and he has led several major European collaborative projects.

Book excerpt: FIDJI 2002 was an international forum for researchers and practitioners in- rested in the advances in, and applications of, software engineering for distri- ted application development. Concerning the technologies, the workshop focused on “Java-related” technologies. It was an opportunity to present and observe the latest research, results, and ideas in these areas. All papers submitted to this workshop were reviewed by at least two members of the International Program Committee. Acceptance was based primarily on the originality and contribution. We selected for these postworkshop proceedings 16 papers amongst 33 submitted, two tutorials, and two keynotes. FIDJI 2002 was aimed at promoting a scienti?c approach to software engin- ring. The scope of the workshop included the following topics: – design of distributed Java applications – Java-related technologies – software and system architecture engineering and development methodo- gies – development methodologies for UML – development methodologies for reliable distributed systems – component-based development methodologies – management of evolutions/iterations in the analysis, design, implementation, and test phases – dependability support during system lifecycle – managing inconsistencies during application development – atomicity and exception handling in system development – software architectures, frameworks, and design patterns for developing d- tributed systems – integration of formal techniques in the development process – formal analysis and grounding of modeling notation and techniques (e. g.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time computer systems are very often subject to dependability requirements because of their application areas. Fly-by-wire airplane control systems, control of power plants, industrial process control systems and others are required to continue their function despite faults. Fault-tolerance and real-time requirements thus constitute a kind of natural combination in process control applications. Systematic fault-tolerance is based on redundancy, which is used to mask failures of individual components. The problem of replica determinism is thereby to ensure that replicated components show consistent behavior in the absence of faults. It might seem trivial that, given an identical sequence of inputs, replicated computer systems will produce consistent outputs. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The problem of replica non-determinism and the presentation of its possible solutions is the subject of Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Systems: The Problem of Replica Determinism. The field of automotive electronics is an important application area of fault-tolerant real-time systems. Systems like anti-lock braking, engine control, active suspension or vehicle dynamics control have demanding real-time and fault-tolerance requirements. These requirements have to be met even in the presence of very limited resources since cost is extremely important. Because of its interesting properties Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Systems gives an introduction to the application area of automotive electronics. The requirements of automotive electronics are a topic of discussion in the remainder of this work and are used as a benchmark to evaluate solutions to the problem of replica determinism.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the 28 papers presented at ESOP 2004, the 13th European Symposium on Programming, which took place in Barcelona, Spain, March 29– 31, 2004. The ESOP series began in 1986 with the goal of bridging the gap between theory and practice, and the conferences continue to be devoted to explaining fundamental issues in the speci?cation, analysis, and implementation of programming languages and systems. The volume begins with a summary of an invited contribution by Peter O’Hearn, titledResources,ConcurrencyandLocalReasoning, andcontinueswith the 27 papers selected by the Program Committee from 118 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three referees, and papers were selected during a ten-day electronic discussion phase. I would like to sincerely thank the members of the Program Committee, as well as their subreferees, for their diligent work; Torben Amtoft, for helping me collect the papers for the proceedings; and Tiziana Margaria, Bernhard Ste?en, and their colleagues at MetaFrame, for the use of their conference management software.

If you have ever aspired to realize the divine within you, you need look no further - within the pages of this powerful book you will find the means to master The Magic of Forgiveness as Dada J.P. Vaswani describes it. What is forgiveness? Why should we forgive? How can forgiveness empower us, heal us, help us to bury the dead past and begin our lives anew? Answers to these and other burning questions are offered here. Dada J.P. Vaswani, whose knowledge of human nature is profound, but, at the same time, compassionate and non-judgemental, teaches us how to apologize with grace; how to forgive with generosity; how to restore damaged relationships; how to overcome resentment and bitterness; how to forgive ourselves when the need arises; and above all, how to forget after we have forgiven someone. It has been said, "We win by tenderness; we conquer by forgiveness." In this book, Dada J.P. Vaswani shows us how we may conquer ourselves - and the hearts of others - by The Magic of Forgiveness!
