Book Synopsis B Physics And Cp Violation: Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference by : Thomas E Browder

This book was released on 1998-04-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation is one of the most subtle effects in the Standard Model of particle physics and may be the first clue to the physics that lies beyond. Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons.Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction, which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimisically named “penguin” interferes with another suppressed, first order “tree” amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects.B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Nearly every major high energy physics laboratory now has a project underway to observe the large CP asymmetries expected in the B sector and to test the consistency of the Standard Model. The unitarity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix in the Standard Model implies the existence of three phases, called alpha, beta and gamma, which can be determined by the measurements of CP asymmetries in B decays. About 200 participants gathered in Hawaii in March 1997 to discuss the progress in the field, and this important book constitutes the proceedings of that conference.

Book Synopsis Interactions Between Particle and Nuclear Physics by : Donnelly
Download or read book Interactions Between Particle and Nuclear Physics written by Donnelly and published by American Inst. of Physics. This book was released on 1998-03-09 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the 6th Conference on Intersections Between Particle and Nuclear Physics contains papers from astrophysicists and nuclear and particle physicists from 21 countries. The topics discussed cover many subjects, from relativistic heavy ion physics and high-energy tests of QCD, which require the highest energy accelerators, to low-energy tests of the electroweak standard model. The energy range extended from physics with ultracold neutrons, involving kinetic energies below 10-6 eV to cosmic ray physics, studying primaries at an energy of 1020 eV. There are many connections between topics, such as the role of strange quarks in neutron stars or as possible signal of a quark-gluon plasma. There are new results including neutrino physics from Super-Kamiokande and evidence for a glueball mixed into the scalar mesons. There are also reviews of topics such as CP violation, lepton-flavor violation, and charm physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to cosmology, this text has an emphasis on the basic principles of the subject. It seeks to explain the application of mechanics, thermodynamics and particle physics to questions on the universe as a whole. The volume also explores: general equations of state; unifying the treatment of dust; radiation; cosmological constant, or exotic components; and the treatment of inhomogeneities (clumpy universe) and their effects on observations.
Book Synopsis Neutrinos in Particle Physics, Astronomy and Cosmology by : Zhizhong Xing
Download or read book Neutrinos in Particle Physics, Astronomy and Cosmology written by Zhizhong Xing and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Neutrinos in Particle Physics, Astronomy and Cosmology" provides a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to neutrino physics, neutrino astronomy and neutrino cosmology. The intrinsic properties and fundamental interactions of neutrinos are described, as is the phenomenology of lepton flavor mixing, seesaw mechanisms and neutrino oscillations. The cosmic neutrino background, stellar neutrinos, supernova neutrinos and ultrahigh-energy cosmic neutrinos, together with the cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry and other roles of massive neutrinos in cosmology, are discussed in detail. This book is intended for researchers and graduate students in the fields of particle physics, particle astrophysics and cosmology. Dr. Zhizhong Xing is a professor at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; Dr. Shun Zhou is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Physics, Germany.
Book Synopsis Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter by : Alexander Merle
Download or read book Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter written by Alexander Merle and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a new look at one of the hottest topics in contemporary science, Dark Matter. It is the pioneering text dedicated to sterile neutrinos as candidate particles for Dark Matter, challenging some of the standard assumptions which may be true for some Dark Matter candidates but not for all. So, this can be seen either as an introduction to a specialized topic or an out-of-the-box introduction to the field of Dark Matter in general. No matter if you are a theoretical particle physicist, an observational astronomer, or a ground based experimentalist, no matter if you are a grad student or an active researcher, you can benefit from this text, for a simple reason: a non-standard candidate for Dark Matter can teach you a lot about what we truly know about our standard picture of how the Universe works.

Download or read book Neutrino Mass written by Guido Altarelli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-02-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews the current state of knowledge of neutrino masses and the related question of neutrino oscillations. After an overview of the theory of neutrino masses and mixings, detailed accounts are given of the laboratory limits on neutrino masses, astrophysical and cosmological constraints on those masses, experimental results on neutrino oscillations, the theoretical interpretation of those results, and theoretical models of neutrino masses and mixings. The book concludes with an examination of the potential of long-baseline experiments. This is an essential reference text for workers in elementary-particle physics, nuclear physics, and astrophysics.
