Book Synopsis Spin In Gravity - Is It Possible To Give An Experimental Basis To Torsion? by : Venzo De Sabbata
Download or read book Spin In Gravity - Is It Possible To Give An Experimental Basis To Torsion? written by Venzo De Sabbata and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-07-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of spin is believed to be a necessary tool if one wishes to quantize general relativity. Then the main problem is to see if the introduction of spin generalizing the general relativity from a geometric point of view, i.e. through the concept of torsion, can be experimentally verified. The reader can find in this book both theoretical and experimental arguments which show the necessity for the introduction of spin, and then of torsion, in gravity. In fact, torsion constitutes the more natural and simple way to introduce spin in general relativity. For that reason it is of fundamental importance to see if there are some experiences that indicate — if not directly, then at least indirectly — the presence of torsion. This book presents a discussion on experiments with a polarized-mass torsion pendulum, the search for galactic dark matter interacting with a spin pendulum, a description of a space-based method for determination of the gravitational constant and space-based measurements of spin in gravity, as well as a discussion on theoretical arguments, for instance the nature of torsion and nonmetricity, the viability of gravitational theories with spin-torsion and spin-spin interaction, many-dimensional gravitational theories with torsion, spinors on curved spaces, the spinors in real space-time, etc.We know that until now there has been no evidence for torsion, but this fact cannot prevent us from considering in some detail this implement of research that seems to be important from both a geometrical and a physical point of view.

Book Synopsis The Search for Non-Newtonian Gravity by : Ephraim Fischbach
Download or read book The Search for Non-Newtonian Gravity written by Ephraim Fischbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the attempts to test the predictions of Newtonian Gravity, describing in detail recent experimental efforts to verify both the inverse-square law and the Equivalence Principle. Interest in these questions has increased in recent years, as it has become recognised that deviations from Newtonian gravity could be a signal for a new fundamental force in nature. This is the first book devoted entirely to this subject, and will thus be useful to both graduate students and researchers interested in this field. It describes the ideas that underlie searches for such deviations, focusing on macroscopic tests. A comprehensive bibliography of some 450 entries supplements the text.

Book Synopsis Inner Space/Outer Space by : Edward Kolb
Download or read book Inner Space/Outer Space written by Edward Kolb and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1986-04 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inner Space/Outer Space brings together much of the exciting work contributing to a new synthesis of modern physics. Particle physicists, concerned with the "inner space" of the atom, are making discoveries that their colleagues in astrophysics, studying outer space, can use to develop and test hypotheses about the events that occurred in the microseconds after the Big Bang and that shaped the universe as we know it today. The papers collected here, from scores of scientists, constitute the proceedings of the first major international conference on research at the interface of particle physics and astrophysics, held in May 1984. The editors have written introductions to each major section that draw out the central themes and elaborate on the primary implications of the papers that follow.
