Book Synopsis Brain Function in Old Age by : H. P. Krause
Download or read book Brain Function in Old Age written by H. P. Krause and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental gerontopsychology attempts to test causal hypotheses about old age-related behavioral changes by the manipulation of age-differences. An experimental treatment is introduced with the purpose of equating different age-groups with respect to a potentially relevant function. If the treatment results in an assimilation of the behavior of the different age-groups (age by-treatment interaction), differences in this function are con sidered as causal for the normally observed behavioral differ ence. If it does not result in an assimilation of the behavior of the different age-groups (main effect of treatment), differ ences in this function are considered as irrelevant for the nor mally observed behavioral difference. The different interpretations of age-by-treatment interactions and main effects of treatment in this kind of research are reasonable only if the experimental treatment actually results in an equalization of the age-groups with respect to the func tion of interest. As is shown, such a functional equalization can neither be demonstrated nor assumed in many cases. In such cases, studies with either age-group can be used to investigate hypotheses about potential causes for old age-related behavioral changes, studies with young subjects having important advantages over studies with old subjects. A test of causal relationships by age-by-treatment interactions is possible in cases where the experimental treatment evidently results in an equalization of the age groups with respect to the function in question. Unfortunately, the field of application for this kind of approach is rather limited.
Book Synopsis Physical Work and Effort by : Gunnar Borg
Download or read book Physical Work and Effort written by Gunnar Borg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Work and Effort is a collection of papers presented at the Proceedings of the First International Symposium held at Stockholm on December 2-4, 1975. This book deals with the investigations done on the clinical physiology of work and effort. This text discusses interdisciplinary measures conducted by psychologists and physiologists on both theoretical and clinical issues. Part 1 discusses basic theories; methods and results that can be found in studies relating to fatigue; visual perception; and stress that includes a simple method of rating these estimates of perceptions. Part 2 evaluates differential and developmental problems such as sex, heart rates, and the differences found in aerobic function related to childhood daily physical activities. Part 3 covers topics on clinical and applied studies such as ECG changes in asymptomatic men; perceived pain during tread-mill exercise; and changes in heart rate during work exertion or when driving under traffic conditions. Part 4 evaluates the psychophysiological intercorrelations from a series of experiments and concludes that two factors are present in the perception of exertion during physical work—the local factor and a central factor. The book also includes the use of a model to evaluate the perceived ratings of these two factors. Psychologists, physiologists, physical therapists, physiotherapists, and scientists involved in work improvement will find this book very valuable.

Book Synopsis Human Physiological Work Capacity by : R. J. Shephard
Download or read book Human Physiological Work Capacity written by R. J. Shephard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1978-07-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the objectives of investigations carried out within the Human Adaptability section of the International Biological Programme was to obtain comparable data on population characteristics over a wide range of ecosystems. This volume provides a brief survey of the variables affecting the physiological work capacity of various populations. The items considered include body weight, fatness, maximum oxygen intake, muscular strength, and the process of oxygen transport from the air to the working muscles. The discussion is based largely on data collected under the auspices of the IBP, using methods standardised for the programme. The influence of race, heredity, environment and disease are considered, and a detailed analysis is made of various classes of athlete. The material will be useful to human and environmental physiologists, anthropologists, and those interested in physical education.
Book Synopsis Behavioral Epidemiology and Disease Prevention by : Robert M. Kaplan
Download or read book Behavioral Epidemiology and Disease Prevention written by Robert M. Kaplan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the l~nited States and in Europe~ there has been an increasing interest in the relationship between individual behavior and disease. The American National Academy of Sciences (Hamberg, Elliott, and Parron, 1982)' through its Institutes of Medicine, has estimated that as many as 50 percent of chronic disease cases can be traced to individual behaviors such as smoking, diet, exercise, etc. Similar conclusions have been reached by a variety of European investigators and institutes. The World Health Organization has also expressed considerable interest in individual behavior in relation to the development of chronic disease. Thus, throughout the NATO countries there has been increased awareness of the relationship between behavior and disease. However, communication among investigators in different countries has been rather limited. Further, many different scientific disciplines including psychology, sociology, medicine, microbiology, statistics, and epidemiology have all developed new and different literatures in this field. One purpose of this book is to bring together contributions from scientists in each of these fields. Much of the variance in individual health behavior occurs across countries rather than within countries. Thus, we can learn much from comparing behavior-disease relationships across countries. To date, there have been few studies which have had an adequate international basis for these comparisons. Interest in behavioral epidemiology is a relatively recent phenomena. Thus, many scientists are entering the field without uniform background, experience, or training. This book discusses approaches common in a variety of NATO countries.
