Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests, Water and People in the Humid Tropics is a comprehensive review of the hydrological and physiological functioning of tropical rain forests, the environmental impacts of their disturbance and conversion to other land uses, and optimum strategies for managing them. The book brings together leading specialists in such diverse fields as tropical anthropology and human geography, environmental economics, climatology and meteorology, hydrology, geomorphology, plant and aquatic ecology, forestry and conservation agronomy. The editors have supplemented the individual contributions with invaluable overviews of the main sections and provide key pointers for future research. Specialists will find authenticated detail in chapters written by experts on a whole range of people-water-land use issues, managers and practitioners will learn more about the implications of ongoing and planned forest conversion, while scientists and students will appreciate a unique review of the literature.

Book Synopsis Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Hurricane Amelioriation Research Project by : United States. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Download or read book Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Hurricane Amelioriation Research Project written by United States. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hurricane Amelioration Research Project is a proposed experiment to be directed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) collaboratively with the Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture and Hydrology. The primary goal of the experiment is to test the hypothesis that maximum surface winds in hurricanes can be reduced 10 to 15 percent or more by seeding the proper clouds in specified portions of the storms with freezing nuclei (silver iodide). SRI International (formerly Stanford Research Institute) prepared the bulk of this report during September 1977 under contract to NOAA. The report presents the results of an analysis of the environmental effects of performing the experiment in the eastern North Pacific off the west coast of Mexico. The analysis covers the environmental effects of dispensing silver iodide and of any resulting changes in the hurricanes; it does not cover environmental effects of the deployment and operation of project aircraft.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Dynamic Meteorology by : James R. Holton
Download or read book An Introduction to Dynamic Meteorology written by James R. Holton and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography. * Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates and beginning graduate students * Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations and laboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web * Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informative laboratory experiments * Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn the material.
Book Synopsis Climatology from Satellites by : Eric Barrett
Download or read book Climatology from Satellites written by Eric Barrett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, was a pioneering study which summarized, within the pre-existing framework of atmospheric knowledge, the more significant findings that emerged from the first decade of climatological analyses of meteorological satellite data. It shows how these data complement and extend the traditional coverage of climatology. The book draws together in one volume research findings which were not previously available in book form and which significantly improve the understanding of climate, especially in regions that were conventionally data-remote.
