Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyphenols are plant non-nutrient natural products, or plant secondary metabolites, found in fruits, vegetables and seeds that we consume daily. Their intakes from fruit, vegetables, seeds, and nuts are associated with lower risks of chronic and age-related degenerative diseases. Aging is a dynamic and complex biological process involving multiple actors and subject to a number of genetic and/or environmental influences. The famous free radical theory of aging proposed by Prof. Harman in 1956 states that free radicals lead to oxidative damage, causing cellular dysfunction and physiological decline, and are responsible for aging, with the appearance of degenerative diseases and eventually death. From this hypothesis, antioxidant molecules are capable of slowing down the aging process through the successful scavenging of radical oxygen and nitrogen species. Polyphenols have been shown to prolong the lifespan of different model species operating through a well-conserved antioxidant mechanism. This collection of research and review articles covers the most recent advances in the use of plant polyphenols, ranging from their biological properties and possible functions as medicines, the importance of traditional medicines as a source of inspiration, the rationalization of new uses of plant extracts which lead to applications in modern medicine, the status of modern green-chemistry extraction methods, to some reflections on future prospects.

Book excerpt: Agri 4.0 and the Future of Cyber-Physical Agricultural Systems is the first book to explore the potential use of technology in agriculture with the focus on the technologies, enabling the reader to better comprehend the full range of CPS opportunities. From planning to distribution, CPS technologies are available to impact agricultural output, delivery and consumption. The impact for food security may be significant and this book explores ways to implement CPS effectively and appropriately. Technology, especially computing technology, can play a significant in the field of agriculture by processing digitized data to solve the complex agronomic, agricultural demand and supply issues that impact the food supply chain, and ultimately food security. In Agri 4.0, the cyber physical system synchronously interacts with agricultural systems to control and execute the operation autonomously. Digitalization of agriculture integrates digital computers to assist the processes of agriculture with its digitized data and its allied technology including AI, Computer Vision, Big data, Block chain and IoT. Agri 4.0 digitalizes, estimate, plan, predict, and produce the optimum agricultural inputs and outputs for the required for commercial purposes. It can be used to get a fair, transparent and accountable process to serve the stakeholders. The convergence of IoT, ML, Big data and 5G networks have opened new possibilities to explore and exploit the cyber physical agricultural systems. The management and practices of smart multi-layer architecture and smart supply chain are one of the key application areas in Agri 4.0. The global team of authors also presents important insights into promising areas of precision agriculture, autonomous systems, smart farming environment, smart production monitoring, pest detection and recovery, sustainable industrial practices and government policies in Agri 4.0. - Addresses one of the most complex applications of CPS - Describes various technologies, covering CPS in agriculture from precision agriculture to smart supply chain management - Focuses on the digital framework, tools, and systems capable of supporting Agri 4.0

This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a political and economic union of Arab states, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the Unites Arab Emirates. The GCC was formed in 1981 to strengthen the members’ economic, social and political ties by harmonizing regulations in various fields including economy, finance, trade and customs. The region extends over a territory of 2 673 108 km2 and is home to about 50 million people. The common denominators of the GCC countries are limited natural fertile land, scarce water resources and harsh climate. Depending on the country, the agriculture sector may use as much as 75 percent of the national available water resources. This has enormous environmental costs and significantly affects the sustainability of overall development in the Arabian Peninsula.According to Al-Rashed and Sherif (2000), the lack of renewable water resources is one of the critical constraints to sustainable development in the GCC countries. Rainfall in the Arabian Peninsula is scarce and infrequent. Over-exploitation of fossil groundwater resources, mostly to meet irrigation demands and create greenery lands, has already affected the productivity of aquifers, both quantitatively and qualitatively, despite the fact that much of the freshwater demand in the GCC countries is already covered using desalinated water. Reducing water consumption and increasing water efficiency are essential to enhancing agriculture and moving towards increased self-sufficiency with the production of high-quality, safe and diversified foods in the GCC countries. Exploiting the full potential of protected agriculture should save significant amounts of water, which can be used not only for agriculture but for other needs as well.
