Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polar Human Biology documents the proceedings of the SCAR/IUPS/IUBS Symposium on Human Biology and Medicine in the Antarctic held at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, England on September 19-21, 1972. This book compiles review papers of expeditions conducted by several scientists, demonstrating the multidisciplinary aspects of the work carried out in both polar regions. The first portion of the compilation describes the problems encountered by Antarctic expeditions in the 1930s and today, which illustrates the tremendous changes in the way in which Antarctic expeditions operated then and now. Following the review papers, medical and dental aspects are also described, including a brief discussion on microbiology. The final section of this book deals with psychological and behavioral aspects, indicating that the interpretation of physiological studies of the effects of cold on man would be greatly helped by knowledge of the psychological effects of the polar situation. This text is a good reference for students or individuals conducting research on human and marine biology in the Antarctic regions.

Book Synopsis The Biology of Calanoid Copepods by :
Download or read book The Biology of Calanoid Copepods written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1998-06-02 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special volume of Advances in Marine Biology covers in detail the biology of calanoid copepods. Copepods are probably the most numerous multicellular organisms on earth. They are aquatic animals that live in both marine and fresh water, and are of prime importance in marine ecosystems as they form a direct link between phytoplankton and fish. This volume is essential for all marine biologists. Advances in Marine Biology contains up-to-date reviews of all areas of marine science, including fisheries science and macro/micro fauna. Each volume contains peer-reviewed papers detailing the ecology of marine regions.

Book excerpt: Volume 43 is an eclectic volume with reviews on ecology and biogeography of marine parasites; fecundity: characteristics and role in life-history strategies of marine invertebrates; the ecology of Southern Ocean Pack-ice; and biological and remote sensing perspectives of pigmentation in coral reef organisms. Advances in Marine Biology was first published in 1963. Now edited by A.J. Southward (Marine Biological Association, UK), P.A. Tyler (Southampton Oceanography Association, UK), C.M. Eclectic volumes in the series are supplemented by thematic volumes on such topics as The Biology of Calanoid Copepods. AMB first published 1963 This volume presents a selection of reviews on the biology of lesser-known taxa of the phylum Mollusca, including: The mostly diminutive protobranch bivalves; The slug-like shelled opisthobranchs; The highly specialized and evolutionarily advanced tusk shells; The beautiful, priceless, yet frustratingly hard-to-collect slit shells

Book Synopsis Biogeochemistry of Marine Systems by : Kenneth D. Black
Download or read book Biogeochemistry of Marine Systems written by Kenneth D. Black and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine systems vary in their sensitivities to perturbation. Perturbation may be insidious - such as increasing eutrophication of coastal areas - or it may be dramatic - such as a response to an oil spill or some other accident. Climate change may occur incrementally or it may be abrupt, and ecosystem resilience is likely to be a complex function of the interactions of the factors and species mediating key biogeochemical processes. Biogeochemistry of Marine Systems considers issues of marine system resilience, focusing on a range of marine systems that exemplify major global province types. Each system is interesting in its own right, on account of its sensitivity to natural or anthropogenic change or its importance as an ecological service provider. Each contributing author concentrates on advances of the last decade. This prime reference source for marine biogeochemists, marine ecologists, and global systems scientists provides a strong foundation for the study of the multiple marine systems undergoing change because of natural biochemical or anthropogenic factors.
