Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Electromagnetic Waves, Volume 11: Electromagnetic Wave Theory, Part 1 covers the proceedings of an International Scientific Radio Union (U.R.S.I.) Symposium on Electromagnetic Wave Theory. The book contains 61 chapters that are organized into three sections. The first section presents papers about wave propagation, which includes lateral waves; terrestrial waveguides; and plane waves in dissipative media. Next, the title reviews studies about wave guides, including basic properties of periodic waveguides; theoretical investigation of non-uniform waveguides; and waves in a coaxial line partially filled with plasma. The last section covers topics about surface waves, such as a dielectric prism in the corner of overmoded waveguide; lasers and optical communication systems; and microwave and laser resonators. The text will be of great use to researchers and practitioners of disciplines that study or utilize electromagnetic wave technologies, such as electrotechnics and electrical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wigner Symposia deal with the most recent developments in those mathematical areas which were introduced to physics by E P Wigner, and also with related fields. The central themes of the proceedings of the 5th Wigner Symposium (WigSym5) are quantum algebras and groups, group-theoretical developments, quantum field theory and geometry, and phase space formulations of quantum mechanics. The proceedings also contain papers on the application of these techniques in various branches of physics, and many contributions in which fundamental mathematical and epistemological questions related to the foundations of quantum theory are discussed.

Book excerpt: An important resource that examines the physical aspects of wireless communications based on mathematical and physical evidence The Physics and Mathematics of Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Cellular Wireless Communicationdescribes the electromagnetic principles for designing a cellular wireless system and includes the subtle electromagnetic principles that are often overlooked in designing such a system. This important text explores both the physics and mathematical concepts used in deploying antennas for transmission and reception of electromagnetic signals and examines how to select the proper methodology from a wide range of scenarios. In this much-needed guide, the authors—noted experts in the field—explore the principle of electromagnetics as developed through the Maxwellian principles and describe the properties of an antenna in the frequency domain. The text also includes a review of the characterization of propagation path loss in a cellular wireless environment and examines ultrawideband antennas and the mechanisms of broadband transmission of both power and information. This important resource: Includes a discussion of the shortcomings of a MIMO system from both theoretical and practical aspects Demonstrates how to deploy base station antennas with better efficiency Validates the principle and the theoretical analysis of electromagnetic propagation in cellular wireless communication Contains results of experiments that are solidly grounded in mathematics and physics Written for engineers, researchers, and educators who are or plan to work in the field, The Physics and Mathematics of Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Cellular Wireless Communicationoffers an essential resource for understanding the principles underpinning wireless communications.

Book excerpt: Dust-plasma interactions are of interest not only to space scientists and astrophysicists but lately also to technologists working in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. This book shows the wide scope of this new field, which is presently in a rapid state of development. It includes discussions not only of the physics and dynamics of charged dust in various plasma environments, but also of collective processes in dusty plasmas (new wave modes and instabilities), and the fascinating new development of the crystallization of dusty plasmas in the laboratory.

Book excerpt: Bidirectional transmission over optical fibre networks may yield a large cost reduction because of the reduction of the network infrastructure by a factor two and the potential cost reduction by an integrated transceiver design. It may also provide a cost-effective way to upgrade distribution networks by adding bidirectional channels. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of bidirectional transmission in optical networks. It handles physical aspects: the behaviour of the fibre itself in bidirectional transmission transmission aspects: the behaviour and design of bidirectional systems and network aspects: the influence of bidirectional transmission on network design. £/LIST£ Practical guidelines are also given for bidirectional system design. Audience:This book is aimed at designers, builders and operators of optical networks, e.g. the manufacturers of optical transmission systems, public-network operators, developers of local-area networks, cable-television operators, etcetera. The intended level of readership is graduate level in physics or electrical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mformation about a material can be gathered from its interaction with electromagnetic waves. The information may be stored in the amplitude, the phase, the polarisation, the angular distribution of energy transportation or the spectral characteristics. When re trieved from the wave, certain material properties may thus be determined indirectly. Compared on the one hand to direct material analysis, an indirect method requires calibration and is prone to interference from undesired sources. On the other hand, however, it permits the determination of features inaccessible by direct methods, such as non-destructive material interrogation, high measurement speed, or deep penetration depth. However, being a physical method, the use of electromagnetic waves is still handicapped by the lack of acceptance by many chemists, who are used to applying direct approaches. Historically, the first application of electromagnetic wave interaction with mat ter involved measurement of amplitude changes at a single frequency caused by material properties, and it is still used today by some systems. This approach was soon supplemented by single frequency phase measurements, in order to avoid distortions through amplitude instabilities or parasitic reflections. Such single pa rameter measurements of course require dependence only on one variable in the measured process and sufficient stability of all other ancillary conditions. If that is not the case, the single parameter measurement fails.
