This book was released on 1992 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is directed to aquaculture development specialists, coastal resource use planners and government officials involved and interested in the planning and management of coastal aquaculture development within the wider context of resource use in coastal areas. It is intended to serve in the promotion of environmental management of coastal aquaculture. Guidelines are given for improved environmental management of coastal aquaculture based on an overview of selected published experiences and concepts. Potential adverse environmental effects of and on coastal aquaculture practices are addressed with consideration of main socio-economic and bio-physical factors. Methodologies are presented for the assessment and monitoring of environmental hazards and impacts of coastal aquaculture. Selected environmental management options are described for application both at policy-level and farm-level.
Book Synopsis Marine Aquaculture by : National Research Council
Download or read book Marine Aquaculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal farming and ocean ranching of marine fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and seaweed are a major and growing industry worldwide. In the United States, freshwater aquaculture is rapidly becoming a significant commercial activity; however, marine aquaculture has lagged behind. This book examines the obstacles to developing marine aquaculture in the United States and offers specific recommendations for technology and policy strategies to encourage this industry. The volume provides a wealth of information on the status of marine aquacultureâ€"including comparisons between U.S. and foreign approaches to policy and technology and of the diverse species under culture. Marine Aquaculture also describes problems of coordination of regulatory policy among various federal, state, and local government agencies and escalating competition for the use of coastal waters. It addresses environmental concerns and suggests engineering and research strategies for alleviating negative impacts from marine aquaculture operations.

Book Synopsis Crustacean Farming by : John F. Wickins
Download or read book Crustacean Farming written by John F. Wickins and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crustacean Farming: Ranching and Culture, Second edition. John F. Wickins and Daniel O'C Lee. The second edition of an extremely well-received book, Crustacean Farming, deals with all cultivated crustaceans of commercial significance, shrimp, prawns, crayfish, lobsters, crabs, and spiny lobsters, and examines the criteria by which both the feasibility and desirability of farming proposals are assessed. The characteristics and production methods of farmed and candidate crustacean species are described in sufficient detail to enable areas of profitable involvement to be distinguished form other opportunities presenting only very high risks and possibilities for serious loss. Coverage extends right from broodstock acquisition and management through to the operation of hatcheries, nurseries and on-growing units to key aspects of processing and marketing. New to this second edition are ranching and re-stocking operations together with the culture of ornamental shrimp and small crustaceans used as live food in fish and shellfish hatcheries. The sections on crustacean diseases, genetics and nutrition have been extended in the light of recent research advances. Examples of investment and operating costs of the different culture options are compared and an analysis of current trends in world crustacean markets is presented to assist in economic and financial appraisal. Special consideration is given to the place of crustacean farming within the economics of developing nations in relation to social and environmental impact in order to promote awareness of the wider implications of global developments. The consequences of recent research and technical developments are considered, together with concerns over genetic and animal welfare issues. Specific areas where further advances in technology are needed to improve the reliability or productivity of farming systems are highlighted. This important book is a vital tool and reference work for all those involved with crustacean farming worldwide.

Book Synopsis Regional Conference on River Habitat Restoration for Inland Fisheries in the Danube River Basin and Adjacent Black Sea Areas by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Regional Conference on River Habitat Restoration for Inland Fisheries in the Danube River Basin and Adjacent Black Sea Areas written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland waterway management is complex and faces unique challenges as inland waterways have a variety of users. The mixture and overlap of local, regional, national and at times international regulations exacerbate the problem of managing inland waterways. In this context, the regional conference ‘River habitat restoration for inland fisheries in the Danube River basin and adjacent Black Sea areas’ was held on 13-15 November 2018 in Bucharest, Romania. This event was organised by the FAO Regional office for Europe and Central Asia in partnership with the International Organisation for the Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Europe (EUROFISH) and EIFAAC and hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Waters and Forests of Romania. This event offered a unique opportunity for stakeholders to share their experience of the issues affecting the sustainability of the Danube river and Black Sea regions. Over 100 attendees from local community level fisherman and farmers to academics, and national and EU level representatives interacted with to 27 invited speakers. Each speaker focused on one of four session subjects ‘Valuing Inland Fisheries Resources’, ‘Conservation and Management’, ‘Regulatory Framework’ and ‘Shared Country Experiences’. A round table discussion concluded the conference, with all participants invited to express their thoughts and discuss the issues affecting sustainability and inland fisheries in the Danube river basin and the Black Sea. The key findings from this concluding discussion have been complied into a list of conference recommendations included in this publication.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Aquaculture by : Carl D Webster
Download or read book Sustainable Aquaculture written by Carl D Webster and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-08-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine the world's leading aquaculture producers! Sustainable Aquaculture: Global Perspectives is a one-of-a-kind primer on the world's leading sources of aquatic production, presenting expert commentary that includes the latest advancements, developments, and research findings. The book examines essential elements of aquaculture (water quality, nutrition, genetics, culture methods) and addresses problems such as over-fishing, coastal and wetland destruction, and habitat and environmental degradation. Sustainable Aquaculture: Global Perspectives addresses policy measures that are essential for the long-term sustainability of the world's fisheries—and the long-term employment of those who rely on the aquaculture industry for their livelihood. As the world's population increases at an alarming rate, the question of how to ensure global food security is one of extreme importance. But the world's total yield is below expectations and the book examines the reasons why: the under-utilization of natural resources, the lack of adoption of modern scientific methods, the lack of standardized, proven pond fertilization protocols; long-term inbreeding and the loss of genetic variability due to genetic drift. Sustainable Aquaculture: Global Perspectives also addresses: freshwater pearl culture breeding programs pond fertilization regimes fish diseases in tropical climates indoor recirculating culture systems water quality management for shrimp farming and much more! With much of its information available in one place for the first time, Sustainable Aquaculture: Global Perspectives is invaluable as a textbook for introductory aquaculture courses and is an essential resource for professionals and researchers.
