Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of UIC 2009, the 6th International C- ference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing: Building Smart Worlds in Real and Cyber Spaces. The UIC 2009 conference was technically co-sponsored by the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Scalable Computing. The conference was also sponsored by the Australian Centre of - cellence in Information and Communication Technologies (NICTA). UIC 2009 was accompanied by six workshops on a variety of research challenges within the area of ubiquitous intelligence and computing. The conference was held in Brisbane, Australia, July 7–9, 2009. The event was the sixth meeting of this conference series. USW 2005 (First International Workshop on Ubiquitous Smart World), held in March 2005 in Taiwan, was the ?rst event in the series. This event was followed by UISW 2005 (Second International Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Smart Worlds) held in December 2005 in Japan. Since 2006, the conference has been held annually under the name UIC (International Conference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing). UIC 2006 was held in September 2006 in Wuhan andThreeGorges,China,followedbyUIC2007heldinJuly2007inHongKong, and UIC 2008 held in June 2008 in Oslo, Norway. Book excerpt: On behalf of the Organizing Committee for Pervasive 2008, welcome to the proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Pervasive Computing. The year2008wasthesecondtimeinasmanyyearsthatthePervasiveconferencehas attempted to “globalize”: For the second year in a row the conference was held outside of Europe. The conference is seen as one of the most respected venues for publishing researchon pervasive and ubiquitous computing and captures the state of the art in pervasive computing research. In 2008, as in previous years, the proceedings present solutions for challenging research problems and help to identify upcoming research opportunities. Pervasive 2008 attracted 114 high-quality submissions, from which the Te- nical Program Committee accepted 18 papers, resulting in a competitive 15. 8% acceptance rate. There were over 335 individual authors from 27 countries,c- ing from a wide range of disciplines and from both academic and industrial organizations. Papers were selected solely on the quality of their peer reviews using a double-blind review process. The review process was carried out by 38 members of the international Technical ProgramCommittee (TPC) who are - perts of international standing. The TPC members were aided by 104 external reviewers. It wasa rigorousreviewprocess,in whicheachpaper had atleastfour reviews: three reviews provided by by the Committee members and one review written by an external reviewer. The reviews were followed by a substantive - liberation on each paper during an electronic discussion phase before the start of the Committee meeting.

Book Synopsis Sharing Expertise by : Mark S. Ackerman
Download or read book Sharing Expertise written by Mark S. Ackerman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of knowledge management focuses on how organizations can most effectively store, manage, retrieve, and enlarge their intellectual properties. The repository view of knowledge management emphasizes the gathering, providing, and filtering of explicit knowledge. The information in a repository has the advantage of being easily transferable and reusable. But it is not easy to use decontextualized information, and users often need access to human experts. This book describes a more recent approach to knowledge management, which the authors call "expertise sharing." Expertise sharing emphasizes the human aspects -- cognitive, social, cultural, and organizational -- of knowledge management, in addition to information storage and retrieval. Rather than focusing on the management level of an organization, expertise sharing focuses on the self-organized activities of the organization's members. The book addresses the concerns of both researchers and practitioners, describing current literature and research as well as offering information on implementing systems. It consists of three parts: an introduction to knowledge sharing in large organizations; empirical studies of expertise sharing in different types of settings; and detailed descriptions of computer systems that can route queries, assemble people and work, and augment naturally occurring social networks within organizations.
