This book was released on 1995 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the Second International Conference on Algebra, held in Barnaul in August 1991 in honour of the memory of A. I. Shirshov (1921--1981). Many of the results presented here have not been published elsewhere in the literature. The collection provides a panorama of current research in PI-, associative, Lie, and Jordan algebras and discusses the interrelations of these areas with geometry and physics. Other topics in group theory and homological algebra are also covered.
Book Synopsis The Theory of Infinite Soluble Groups by : John C. Lennox
Download or read book The Theory of Infinite Soluble Groups written by John C. Lennox and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central concept in this monograph is that of a soluble group - a group which is built up from abelian groups by repeatedly forming group extensions. It covers all the major areas, including finitely generated soluble groups, soluble groups of finite rank, modules over group rings, algorithmic problems, applications of cohomology, and finitely presented groups, whilst remaining fairly strictly within the boundaries of soluble group theory. An up-to-date survey of the area aimed at research students and academic algebraists and group theorists, it is a compendium of information that will be especially useful as a reference work for researchers in the field.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Knot Theory by : William Menasco
Download or read book Handbook of Knot Theory written by William Menasco and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-08-02 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a survey of current topics in the mathematical theory of knots. For a mathematician, a knot is a closed loop in 3-dimensional space: imagine knotting an extension cord and then closing it up by inserting its plug into its outlet. Knot theory is of central importance in pure and applied mathematics, as it stands at a crossroads of topology, combinatorics, algebra, mathematical physics and biochemistry. * Survey of mathematical knot theory * Articles by leading world authorities * Clear exposition, not over-technical * Accessible to readers with undergraduate background in mathematics
Book Synopsis The Arcata Conference on Representations of Finite Groups, Part 2 by : Paul Fong
Download or read book The Arcata Conference on Representations of Finite Groups, Part 2 written by Paul Fong and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in these proceedings of the 1986 Arcata Summer Institute bear witness to the extraordinarily vital and intense research in the representation theory of finite groups. The confluence of diverse mathematical disciplines has brought forth work of great scope and depth. Particularly striking is the influence of algebraic geometry and cohomology theory in the modular representation theory and the character theory of reductive groups over finite fields, and in the general modular representation theory of finite groups. The continuing developments in block theory and the general character theory of finite groups is noteworthy. The expository and research aspects of the Summer Institute are well represented by these papers.

Download or read book Abelian Groups written by László Fuchs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the subject’s foremost experts, this book focuses on the central developments and modern methods of the advanced theory of abelian groups, while remaining accessible, as an introduction and reference, to the non-specialist. It provides a coherent source for results scattered throughout the research literature with lots of new proofs. The presentation highlights major trends that have radically changed the modern character of the subject, in particular, the use of homological methods in the structure theory of various classes of abelian groups, and the use of advanced set-theoretical methods in the study of un decidability problems. The treatment of the latter trend includes Shelah’s seminal work on the un decidability in ZFC of Whitehead’s Problem; while the treatment of the former trend includes an extensive (but non-exhaustive) study of p-groups, torsion-free groups, mixed groups and important classes of groups arising from ring theory. To prepare the reader to tackle these topics, the book reviews the fundamentals of abelian group theory and provides some background material from category theory, set theory, topology and homological algebra. An abundance of exercises are included to test the reader’s comprehension, and to explore noteworthy extensions and related sidelines of the main topics. A list of open problems and questions, in each chapter, invite the reader to take an active part in the subject’s further development.

Book Synopsis Knots, Groups and 3-Manifolds (AM-84), Volume 84 by : Lee Paul Neuwirth
Download or read book Knots, Groups and 3-Manifolds (AM-84), Volume 84 written by Lee Paul Neuwirth and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a sympathy of ideas among the fields of knot theory, infinite discrete group theory, and the topology of 3-manifolds. This book contains fifteen papers in which new results are proved in all three of these fields. These papers are dedicated to the memory of Ralph H. Fox, one of the world's leading topologists, by colleagues, former students, and friends. In knot theory, papers have been contributed by Goldsmith, Levine, Lomonaco, Perko, Trotter, and Whitten. Of these several are devoted to the study of branched covering spaces over knots and links, while others utilize the braid groups of Artin. Cossey and Smythe, Stallings, and Strasser address themselves to group theory. In his contribution Stallings describes the calculation of the groups In/In+1 where I is the augmentation ideal in a group ring RG. As a consequence, one has for each k an example of a k-generator l-relator group with no free homomorphs. In the third part, papers by Birman, Cappell, Milnor, Montesinos, Papakyriakopoulos, and Shalen comprise the treatment of 3-manifolds. Milnor gives, besides important new results, an exposition of certain aspects of our current knowledge regarding the 3- dimensional Brieskorn manifolds.
Book Synopsis Group Matrices, Group Determinants and Representation Theory by : Kenneth W. Johnson
Download or read book Group Matrices, Group Determinants and Representation Theory written by Kenneth W. Johnson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out an account of the tools which Frobenius used to discover representation theory for nonabelian groups and describes its modern applications. It provides a new viewpoint from which one can examine various aspects of representation theory and areas of application, such as probability theory and harmonic analysis. For example, the focal objects of this book, group matrices, can be thought of as a generalization of the circulant matrices which are behind many important algorithms in information science. The book is designed to appeal to several audiences, primarily mathematicians working either in group representation theory or in areas of mathematics where representation theory is involved. Parts of it may be used to introduce undergraduates to representation theory by studying the appealing pattern structure of group matrices. It is also intended to attract readers who are curious about ideas close to the heart of group representation theory, which do not usually appear in modern accounts, but which offer new perspectives.
