Book Synopsis Constructing Frames of Reference by : Lewis R. Binford
Download or read book Constructing Frames of Reference written by Lewis R. Binford and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-06-16 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many consider Lewis Binford to be the single most influential figure in archaeology in the last half-century. His contributions to the "New Archaeology" changed the course of the field, as he argued for the development of a scientifically rigorous framework to guide the excavation and interpretation of the archaeological record. This book, the culmination of Binford's intellectual legacy thus far, presents a detailed description of his methodology and its significance for understanding hunter-gatherer cultures on a global basis. This landmark publication will be an important step in understanding the great process of cultural evolution and will change the way archaeology proceeds as a scientific enterprise. This work provides a major synthesis of an enormous body of cultural and environmental information and offers many original insights into the past. Binford helped pioneer what is now called "ethnoarchaeology"—the study of living societies to help explain cultural patterns in the archaeological record—and this book is grounded on a detailed analysis of ethnographic data from about 340 historically known hunter-gatherer populations. The methodological framework based on this data will reshape the paradigms through which we understand human culture for years to come.

This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland: Vols. 15-18; 1900-1904 Thirteen Council Meetings have been held during the year. The attendance of officers will be found in Appendix A. Ten Ordinary Meetings of Members have been held, and the attendance has been very satisfactory. A list of the papers read at these meetings is given in Appendix B. In former years one of the most interesting features of these meetings was the exhibition of specimens, models, etc., but the Council regret that during the past two sessions very little has been done in this direction, and would urge members to endeavour to renew this instructive custom. In July last, instead of the Ordinary Meeting, a Scientific Conversazione was held, to which one thousand invitations were issued, resulting in an attendance of between 700 and 800 persons. The whole of the rooms of the College were occupied for lectures and displays of scientific apparatus. It proved a complete success, and reflected great credit on all those who assisted and on the Committee of Management. In March last, Vol. XIV. Of the Proceedings, containing the papers read during the 1898 session, was published and distributed. A list of the new members (33) will be found in Appendix C. This number has not been reached for many years past. The Council regret that since the last Annual Meeting death has deprived the Society of two members, viz. Mr. Othman Blakey, who died about a month after his election as a member; and Mr. James Thorpe, a very old member, who did valuable work as Hon. Secretary of the Philosophical Society of Queensland, with which this Society was incorporated in 1884. The Queensland Volume of the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature which was in course of preparation when the last report was submitted, has been completed; and, through the courtesy of the Hon. The Chief Secretary of Queensland (hon. J. R. Dickson), copies were distributed in July last to those who were members of the Society at that time, as well as to a number of Institutions with which the Society exchanges publications. The Council wish to record their appreciation of the manner in which the compiler, Mr. J. Shirley, b.sc., performed this work. The copy of a letter to the Agent General for Queensland, given in appendix D., shows that Professor Armstrong, the Chair man of the International Catalogue Committee, was pleased with the publication. Book Synopsis Taxonomy of Australian Mammals by : Stephen Jackson
Download or read book Taxonomy of Australian Mammals written by Stephen Jackson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxonomy of Australian Mammals utilises the latest morphometric and genetic research to develop the most up to date and comprehensive revision of the taxonomy of Australian mammals undertaken to date. It proposes significant changes to the higher ranks of a number of groups and recognises several genera and species that have only very recently been identified as distinct. This easy to use reference also includes a complete listing of all species, subspecies and synonyms for all of Australia’s mammals, both native and introduced as well as terrestrial and marine. This book lays a foundation for future taxonomic work and identifies areas where taxonomic studies should be targeted, not only at the species and subspecies level but also broader phylogenetic relationships. This work will be an essential reference for students, scientists, wildlife managers and those interested in the science of taxonomy.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of marine phosphorites, the principal raw material for phosphatic fertilizers, appears to be related mainly to marine biological productivity, often associated with upwelling currents during certain intervals of geological time. This book examines the environmental setting and resulting phosphorites which formed during the Miocene period, and investigations of modern oceanic environments where phosphorites are presently forming are also described.

Book Synopsis Evolution of the Insects by : David Grimaldi
Download or read book Evolution of the Insects written by David Grimaldi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-16 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most diverse group of organisms in the 3 billion-year history of life on Earth, and the most ecologically dominant animals on land. This book chronicles for the first time the complete evolutionary history of insects: their living diversity, relationships and 400 million years of fossils. Whereas other volumes have focused on either living species or fossils, this is the first comprehensive synthesis of all aspects of insect evolution. The book is illustrated with 955 photo- and electronmicrographs, drawings, diagrams, and field photos, many in full colour and virtually all of them original. The book will appeal to anyone engaged with insect diversity: professional entomologists and students, insect and fossil collectors, and naturalists.
