Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, Vol. 1 The annual meeting of the Society was held this day in the State House, the President, Dr. Samuel H. Pennington, in the chair. Mr. Ernest E. Coe, the Recording Secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting. The President called attention to the death of Ambassador Runyon and on motion he appointed Messrs. Garret D.W. Vroom, William Nelson and William R.Weeks to draft appropriate resolutions, who subsequently reported the following minute, which was ordered to be entered on the records: The New Jersey Historical, Society desires to give expression to the universal sorrow felt throughout our State at the sudden death of the Hon. Theodore Runyon, Ambassador of the United States to Germany, and for many years Chancellor of New Jersey, and we would bear witness to his unblemished character and high ability. Born in the county of Somerset, in this state, and of Huguenot ancestry, he was graduated at Yale college, and admitted to the Bar of New Jersey in 1846. Rapidly rising in his profession, he was soon recognized as a leader of the Essex Bar, then noted for its distinguished and learned members. Appointed Chancellor in 1873, he brought to the discharge of the duties of that office, a ripe experience as a practitioner, a profound knowledge of the law, and a charm of manner that endeared him to all that practiced under him, and at once popularized the Court of Chancery.
