Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1890 and 1906, pioneering scientists in the Netherlands reached an understanding of phase separation and fluid mixture criticality that was far ahead of its time. This book narrates the story of these profound discoveries, and details the collaboration between two Dutch physicists and Nobel prize winners, Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923) at the University of Amsterdam, and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1853-1926) at the University of Leiden.

Book Synopsis The Beauty of Fractals by : Heinz-Otto Peitgen
Download or read book The Beauty of Fractals written by Heinz-Otto Peitgen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now approaching its tenth year, this hugely successful book presents an unusual attempt to publicise the field of Complex Dynamics. The text was originally conceived as a supplemented catalogue to the exhibition "Frontiers of Chaos", seen in Europe and the United States, and describes the context and meaning of these fascinating images. A total of 184 illustrations - including 88 full-colour pictures of Julia sets - are suggestive of a coffee-table book. However, the invited contributions which round off the book lend the text the required formality. Benoit Mandelbrot gives a very personal account, in his idiosyncratic self-centred style, of his discovery of the fractals named after him and Adrien Douady explains the solved and unsolved problems relating to this amusingly complex set.

Download or read book PET Chemistry written by P.A. Schubiger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-01-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personalized medicine employing patient-based tailor-made therapeutic drugs is taking over treatment paradigms in a variety of ?elds in oncology and the central nervous system. The success of such therapies is mainly dependent on ef?cacious therapeutic drugs and a selective imaging probe for identi?cation of potential responders as well as therapy monitoring for an early bene?t assessment. Molecular imaging (MI) is based on the selective and speci?c interaction of a molecular probe with a biological target which is visualized through nuclear, magnetic resonance, near infrared or other methods. Therefore it is the method of choice for patient selection and therapy monitoring as well as for speci?c e- point monitoring in modern drug development. PET (positron emitting tomography), a nuclear medical imaging modality, is ideally suited to produce three-dimensional images of various targets or processes. The rapidly increasing demand for highly selective probes for MI strongly pushes the development of new PET tracers and PET chemistry. ‘PET chemistry’ can be de?ned as the study of positron-emitting compounds regarding their synthesis, structure, composition, reactivity, nuclear properties and processes and their properties in natural and - natural environments. In practice PET chemistry is strongly in?uenced by the unique properties of the radioisotopes used (e. g. , half-life, che- cal reactivity, etc. ) and integrates scienti?c aspects of nuclear-, organic-, inorganic- and biochemistry.

Book Synopsis Control of Self-Organizing Nonlinear Systems by : Eckehard Schöll
Download or read book Control of Self-Organizing Nonlinear Systems written by Eckehard Schöll and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes the state-of-the-art of research on control of self-organizing nonlinear systems with contributions from leading international experts in the field. The first focus concerns recent methodological developments including control of networks and of noisy and time-delayed systems. As a second focus, the book features emerging concepts of application including control of quantum systems, soft condensed matter, and biological systems. Special topics reflecting the active research in the field are the analysis and control of chimera states in classical networks and in quantum systems, the mathematical treatment of multiscale systems, the control of colloidal and quantum transport, the control of epidemics and of neural network dynamics.

Download or read book Photoinduced Phase Transitions written by K. Nasu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new class of insulating solids was recently discovered. Whenirradiated by a few visible photons, these solids give rise to amacroscopic excited domain that has new structural and electronicorders quite different from the starting ground state. This occurrenceis called photoinduced phase transition, and this multi-authoredbook reviews recent theoretical and experimental studies of this newphenomenon.

Book Synopsis Molecular Anatomic Imaging by : Gustav Konrad von Schulthess
Download or read book Molecular Anatomic Imaging written by Gustav Konrad von Schulthess and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2007 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully updated Second Edition focuses sharply on clinical PET-CT and SPECT-CT examinations, omitting lengthy physics discussions. The book is now strictly disease oriented and integrates PET-CT and SPECT-CT applications completely. When both techniques are relevant for a disease, they are discussed together; when only one is relevant, it is discussed alone. More than 1,200 illustrations are included. A bound-in DVD contains over 80 cases to be viewed in three orthogonal planes and different CT windows organized as reference and self-assessment files. The cases provide excellent training and allow readers to test their abilities in making diagnoses on their own.
Book Synopsis The Future of Aerospace by : National Academy of Engineering
Download or read book The Future of Aerospace written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few technological advances have affected the lives and dreams of individuals and the operations of companies and governments as much as the continuing development of flight. From space exploration to package transport, from military transport to passenger helicopter use, from passenger jumbo jets to tilt-rotor commuter planes, the future of flying is still rapidly developing. The essays in this volume survey the state of progress along several fronts of this constantly evolving frontier. Five eminent authorities assess prospects for the future of rotary-wing aircraft, large passenger aircraft, commercial aviation, manned spaceflight, and defense aerospace in the post-Cold War era.
