Book Synopsis Theory and Practice of Geophysical Data Inversion by : Andreas Vogel
Download or read book Theory and Practice of Geophysical Data Inversion written by Andreas Vogel and published by Vieweg+Teubner Verlag. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume cover a wide spectrum of recent developments in geophysical data inversion, including basic mathematics and general theory, numerical methods, as well as computer implementation of algorithms. Most of the papers are motivated by problems arising from geophysical research and applications both on a global scale and with respect to local geophysical surveys, underlining the increasing importance of geophysical exploration methods in various fields, such as structural geology, prospecting for mineral and energy resources, hydro geology, geotechnology, environmental protection and archaeology. The first section of the book deals with basic mathematics and general theory underlying geophysical data inversion. Papers presented here are concerned with stabilization algorithms to solve ill-posed inverse problems, sensitivity of kernel function estimations to random data errors and reduction of errors in inverse modelling of response functions by linear constraints, numerical procedures for approximating the solution to boundary value problems, accuracy and stability of inverse ill-posed problems constituted by problems of moments, and fast Fourier transforms for solving potential field problems. The second section contains papers on gravity and magnetics, dealing with the solvability of the inverse gravimetric problem for sources represented by point masses and other elementary, solution of the inverse problem in cases of nonuniformly distributed data as obtained by palaeomagnetic studies, satellite observations, and surface projections of buried archaeological targets by inverse filtering of geomagnetic data.

Book Synopsis Geomathematically Oriented Potential Theory by : Willi Freeden
Download or read book Geomathematically Oriented Potential Theory written by Willi Freeden and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Earth`s surface deviates from its spherical shape by less than 0.4 percent of its radius and today’s satellite missions collect their gravitational and magnetic data on nearly spherical orbits, sphere-oriented mathematical methods and tools play important roles in studying the Earth’s gravitational and magnetic field. Geomathematically Oriented Potential Theory presents the principles of space and surface potential theory involving Euclidean and spherical concepts. The authors offer new insight on how to mathematically handle gravitation and geomagnetism for the relevant observables and how to solve the resulting potential problems in a systematic, mathematically rigorous framework. The book begins with notational material and the necessary mathematical background. The authors then build the foundation of potential theory in three-dimensional Euclidean space and its application to gravitation and geomagnetism. They also discuss surface potential theory on the unit sphere along with corresponding applications. Focusing on the state of the art, this book breaks new geomathematical grounds in gravitation and geomagnetism. It explores modern sphere-oriented potential theoretic methods as well as classical space potential theory.

Book Synopsis Gravity, Geoid and Earth Observation by : Stelios P. Mertikas
Download or read book Gravity, Geoid and Earth Observation written by Stelios P. Mertikas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings include the written version of papers presented at the IAG International Symposium on "Gravity, Geoid and Earth Observation 2008". The Symposium was held in Chania, Crete, Greece, 23-27 June 2008 and organized by the Laboratory of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. The meeting was arranged by the International Association of Geodesy and in particular by the IAG Commission 2: Gravity Field. The symposium aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid, geodynamics and Earth observation. Besides covering the traditional research areas, special attention was paid to the use of geodetic methods for: Earth observation, environmental monitoring, Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS), Earth Gravity Models (e.g., EGM08), geodynamics studies, dedicated gravity satellite missions (i.e., GOCE), airborne gravity surveys, Geodesy and geodynamics in polar regions, and the integration of geodetic and geophysical information.
