Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert A. Rankin, one of the world's foremost authorities on modular forms and a founding editor of The Ramanujan Journal, died on January 27, 2001, at the age of 85. Rankin had broad interests and contributed fundamental papers in a wide variety of areas within number theory, geometry, analysis, and algebra. To commemorate Rankin's life and work, the editors have collected together 25 papers by several eminent mathematicians reflecting Rankin's extensive range of interests within number theory. Many of these papers reflect Rankin's primary focus in modular forms. It is the editors' fervent hope that mathematicians will be stimulated by these papers and gain a greater appreciation for Rankin's contributions to mathematics. This volume would be an inspiration to students and researchers in the areas of number theory and modular forms.

The research in these areas has lately shown that if the magnetic compounds are opportunely functionalized and modified with moieties and specific functional groups, a plethora of challenging multidisciplinary applications is available, including the development of magnetically controlled particles, stimuli-responsive materials, magnetically guided chemical/drug-delivery systems, sensors, spintronics, separation and purification of contaminated groundwater and soils, ferrofluids and magnetorheological fluids, contrast agents for MRI, and internal sources of heat for the thermoablation of cancer. Magnetic compounds have been found to be highly selective and effective in all these application fields, from the molecular level to the microscale. This book aims at underlining the latest advances in the field of magnetic compounds, nanosystems, and materials, covering a large variety of topics related to novel synthesis and functionalization methods and the properties, applications, and use of magnetic systems in chemistry, materials science, diagnostics, and medical therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it was in print for a short time only, the original edition of Multiplicative Number Theory had a major impact on research and on young mathematicians. By giving a connected account of the large sieve and Bombieri's theorem, Professor Davenport made accessible an important body of new discoveries. With this stimula tion, such great progress was made that our current understanding of these topics extends well beyond what was known in 1966. As the main results can now be proved much more easily. I made the radical decision to rewrite §§23-29 completely for the second edition. In making these alterations I have tried to preserve the tone and spirit of the original. Rather than derive Bombieri's theorem from a zero density estimate tor L timctions, as Davenport did, I have chosen to present Vaughan'S elementary proof of Bombieri's theorem. This approach depends on Vaughan's simplified version of Vinogradov's method for estimating sums over prime numbers (see §24). Vinogradov devised his method in order to estimate the sum LPH e(prx); to maintain the historical perspective I have inserted (in §§25, 26) a discussion of this exponential sum and its application to sums of primes, before turning to the large sieve and Bombieri's theorem. Before Professor Davenport's untimely death in 1969, several mathematicians had suggested small improvements which might be made in Multiplicative Number Theory, should it ever be reprinted.

Book excerpt: An authority on the human mind reflects on his intellectual development, his groundbreaking work, and different types of intelligences--including his own. Howard Gardner's Frames of Mind was that rare publishing phenomenon--a mind-changer. Widely read by the general public as well as by educators, this influential book laid out Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. It debunked the primacy of the IQ test and inspired new approaches to education; entire curricula, schools, museums, and parents' guides were dedicated to the nurturing of the several intelligences. In his new book, A Synthesizing Mind, Gardner reflects on his intellectual development and his groundbreaking work, tracing his evolution from bookish child to eager college student to disengaged graduate student to Harvard professor.

It contains carefully selected research papers addressing the arithmetic geometry of varieties which are not of general type, with an emphasis on how rational points are distributed with respect to the classical, Zariski and adelic topologies. The present volume gives a glimpse of the state of the art of this rapidly expanding domain in arithmetic geometry. The techniques involve explicit geometric constructions, ideas from the minimal model program in algebraic geometry as well as analytic number theory and harmonic analysis on adelic groups.

Book excerpt: The rapid development of quantum technologies has driven a revolution in related research areas such as quantum computation and communication, and quantum materials. The first prototypes of functional quantum devices are beginning to appear, frequently created using ensembles of atoms, which allow the observation of sensitive, quantum effects, and have important applications in quantum simulation and matter wave interferometry. This modern text offers a self-contained introduction to the fundamentals of quantum atom optics and atomic many-body matter wave systems. Assuming a familiarity with undergraduate quantum mechanics, this book will be accessible for graduate students and early career researchers moving into this important new field. A detailed description of the underlying theory of quantum atom optics is given, before development of the key, quantum, technological applications, such as atom interferometry, quantum simulation, quantum metrology, and quantum computing.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very fast advances in IC technologies have brought new challenges into the physical design of integrated systems. The emphasis on system performance, in lately developed applications, requires timing and power constraints to be considered at each stage of physical design. The size of ICs is decreasing continuously, and the density of power dissipated in the circuits is growing rapidly. The first challenge is the Information Technology where new materials, devices, telecommunication and multimedia facilities are developed. The second one is the Biomedical Science and Biotechnology. The utilisation of bloodless surgery is possible now because of wide micro-sensors and micro-actuators application. Nowadays, the modern micro systems can be implanted directly into the human body and the medicine can be applied right in the proper time and place in the patient body. The low-power devices are being developed particularly for medical and space applications. This has created for designers in all scientific domains new possibilities which must be handed down to the future generations of designers. In this spirit, we organised the Fourth International Workshop "MIXED DESIGN OF INTEGRATED CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS" in order to provide an international forum for discussion and the exchange of information on education, teaching experiences, training and technology transfer in the area of microelectronics and microsystems.
