Book Synopsis Discontinuous Groups of Isometries in the Hyperbolic Plane by : Werner Fenchel
Download or read book Discontinuous Groups of Isometries in the Hyperbolic Plane written by Werner Fenchel and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an introductory textbook on isometry groups of the hyperbolic plane. Interest in such groups dates back more than 120 years. Examples appear in number theory (modular groups and triangle groups), the theory of elliptic functions, and the theory of linear differential equations in the complex domain (giving rise to the alternative name Fuchsian groups). The current book is based on what became known as the famous Fenchel-Nielsen manuscript. Jakob Nielsen (1890-1959) started this project well before World War II, and his interest arose through his deep investigations on the topology of Riemann surfaces and from the fact that the fundamental group of a surface of genus greater than one is represented by such a discontinuous group. Werner Fenchel (1905-1988) joined the project later and overtook much of the preparation of the manuscript. The present book is special because of its very complete treatment of groups containing reversions and because it avoids the use of matrices to represent Moebius maps. This text is intended for students and researchers in the many areas of mathematics that involve the use of discontinuous groups.

This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study 79 contains a collection of papers presented at the Conference on Discontinuous Groups and Ricmann Surfaces at the University of Maryland, May 21-25, 1973. The papers, by leading authorities, deal mainly with Fuchsian and Kleinian groups, Teichmüller spaces, Jacobian varieties, and quasiconformal mappings. These topics are intertwined, representing a common meeting of algebra, geometry, and analysis.

Book Synopsis Quadratic Differentials by : K. Strebel
Download or read book Quadratic Differentials written by K. Strebel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quadratic differential on aRiemann surface is locally represented by a ho lomorphic function element wh ich transforms like the square of a derivative under a conformal change of the parameter. More generally, one also allows for meromorphic function elements; however, in many considerations it is con venient to puncture the surface at the poles of the differential. One is then back at the holomorphic case. A quadratic differential defines, in a natural way, a field of line elements on the surface, with singularities at the critical points, i.e. the zeros and poles of the differential. The integral curves of this field are called the trajectories of the differential. A large part of this book is about the trajectory structure of quadratic differentials. There are of course local and global aspects to this structure. Be sides, there is the behaviour of an individual trajectory and the structure deter mined by entire subfamilies of trajectories. An Abelian or first order differential has an integral or primitive function is in general not single-valued. In the case of a quadratic on the surface, which differential, one first has to take the square root and then integrate. The local integrals are only determined up to their sign and arbitrary additive constants. However, it is this multivalued function which plays an important role in the theory; the trajectories are the images of the horizontals by single valued branches of its inverse.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Theory of Higher-Dimensional Quasiconformal Mappings by : Frederick W. Gehring
Download or read book An Introduction to the Theory of Higher-Dimensional Quasiconformal Mappings written by Frederick W. Gehring and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a modern, up-to-date introduction to quasiconformal mappings from an explicitly geometric perspective, emphasizing both the extensive developments in mapping theory during the past few decades and the remarkable applications of geometric function theory to other fields, including dynamical systems, Kleinian groups, geometric topology, differential geometry, and geometric group theory. It is a careful and detailed introduction to the higher-dimensional theory of quasiconformal mappings from the geometric viewpoint, based primarily on the technique of the conformal modulus of a curve family. Notably, the final chapter describes the application of quasiconformal mapping theory to Mostow's celebrated rigidity theorem in its original context with all the necessary background. This book will be suitable as a textbook for graduate students and researchers interested in beginning to work on mapping theory problems or learning the basics of the geometric approach to quasiconformal mappings. Only a basic background in multidimensional real analysis is assumed.
