Book Synopsis Ghosts of the Confederacy by : Gaines M. Foster
Download or read book Ghosts of the Confederacy written by Gaines M. Foster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1987-04-23 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Lee and Grant met at Appomatox Court House in 1865 to sign the document ending the long and bloody Civil War, the South at last had to face defeat as the dream of a Confederate nation melted into the Lost Cause. Through an examination of memoirs, personal papers, and postwar Confederate rituals such as memorial day observances, monument unveilings, and veterans' reunions, Ghosts of the Confederacy probes into how white southerners adjusted to and interpreted their defeat and explores the cultural implications of a central event in American history. Foster argues that, contrary to southern folklore, southerners actually accepted their loss, rapidly embraced both reunion and a New South, and helped to foster sectional reconciliation and an emerging social order. He traces southerners' fascination with the Lost Cause--showing that it was rooted as much in social tensions resulting from rapid change as it was in the legacy of defeat--and demonstrates that the public celebration of the war helped to make the South a deferential and conservative society. Although the ghosts of the Confederacy still haunted the New South, Foster concludes that they did little to shape behavior in it--white southerners, in celebrating the war, ultimately trivialized its memory, reduced its cultural power, and failed to derive any special wisdom from defeat.
Book Synopsis The South to Posterity by : Douglas Southall Freeman
Download or read book The South to Posterity written by Douglas Southall Freeman and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the publication of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind, many Confederate historians were asked, “What shall I read next?” To answer the requests for further writings on the Civil War era, distinguished historian Douglas Southall Freeman assembled this bibliography of the best narratives, memoirs, and other works—those that tell their stories simply, with wit and realism—that provide a good introduction to literature on the Lost Cause. In contrast to most bibliographies, The South to Posterity reads easily and often movingly. In eight masterful chapters, Freeman reviews soldiers’ battlefield accounts; vindications penned just after the war; biographies of and tributes to General Robert E. Lee; women’s commentaries; thoughts from foreign observers and participants; and diaries, letters, and speeches. Finally, he discusses topics yet to be addressed. A new introduction by Civil War historian Gary W. Gallagher provides an excellent background to Freeman’s life and work and considers what has been accomplished in the field since the book first appeared.

Book Synopsis The Voyage of the CSS Shenandoah by : William C. Whittle
Download or read book The Voyage of the CSS Shenandoah written by William C. Whittle and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederate cruiser Shenandoah was the last of a group of commerce raiders deployed to prey on Union merchant ships. Ordered to the Pacific Ocean, the Shenandoah's successes compared favorably with the exploits of the more celebrated Alabama and Florida but have never been as well known because the Shenandoah's story coincided with the war's end. The expedition, however, from England to the Indian Ocean, Australia and the South Pacific, the Bering Sea, San Francisco, and finally to port in Liverpool, was one of the best documented during the Civil War. Among the most significant accounts of the expedition is the journal of Lieutenant William Whittle Jr., which is presented here with annotations from other journals, the official records and logs, and newspaper accounts or the Shenandoah's activities. These fascinating primary sources bring to life the history of this remarkable voyage. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Whose America? by : Jonathan Zimmerman
Download or read book Whose America? written by Jonathan Zimmerman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded edition of his 2002 book, Zimmerman surveys how battles over public education have become conflicts at the heart of American national identity. Critical Race Theory. The 1619 Project. Mask mandates. As the headlines remind us, American public education is still wracked by culture wars. But these conflicts have shifted sharply over the past two decades, from religious issues to national ones, marking larger changes in the ways that Americans imagine themselves. From the Scopes Trial over evolution in the 1920s through battles over school prayer in the '80s and '90s, the twentieth century's bitterest school battles were tied to questions of faith. By contrast, America forged truces over history instruction by adding new groups to a shared patriotic story of freedom and progress. Jonathan Zimmerman forecast as much in his 2002 book, Whose America? Twenty years later, though, Zimmerman has reconsidered: arguments over what American history is, what it means, and how it is taught have exploded with special force in recent years, whether over Confederate monuments, the naming of buildings and institutions, or the very definition of patriotism. In this substantially expanded new edition, Zimmerman meditates on the history of the culture wars in the classroom--and on what our inability to find common ground might mean for our future.
