Book Synopsis Strength in Numbers: The Rising of Academic Statistics Departments in the U. S. by : Alan Agresti
Download or read book Strength in Numbers: The Rising of Academic Statistics Departments in the U. S. written by Alan Agresti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical science as organized in formal academic departments is relatively new. With a few exceptions, most Statistics and Biostatistics departments have been created within the past 60 years. This book consists of a set of memoirs, one for each department in the U.S. created by the mid-1960s. The memoirs describe key aspects of the department’s history -- its founding, its growth, key people in its development, success stories (such as major research accomplishments) and the occasional failure story, PhD graduates who have had a significant impact, its impact on statistical education, and a summary of where the department stands today and its vision for the future. Read here all about how departments such as at Berkeley, Chicago, Harvard, and Stanford started and how they got to where they are today. The book should also be of interests to scholars in the field of disciplinary history.
Book Synopsis Analysis of Survey Data by : R. L. Chambers
Download or read book Analysis of Survey Data written by R. L. Chambers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with statistical methods for the analysis of data collected from a survey. A survey could consist of data collected from a questionnaire or from measurements, such as those taken as part of a quality control process. Concerned with the statistical methods for the analysis of sample survey data, this book will update and extend the successful book edited by Skinner, Holt and Smith on 'Analysis of Complex Surveys'. The focus will be on methodological issues, which arise when applying statistical methods to sample survey data and will discuss in detail the impact of complex sampling schemes. Further issues, such as how to deal with missing data and measurement of error will also be critically discussed. There have significant improvements in statistical software which implement complex sampling schemes (eg SUDAAN, STATA, WESVAR, PC CARP ) in the last decade and there is greater need for practical advice for those analysing survey data. To ensure a broad audience, the statistical theory will be made accessible through the use of practical examples. This book will be accessible to a broad audience of statisticians but will primarily be of interest to practitioners analysing survey data. Increased awareness by social scientists of the variety of powerful statistical methods will make this book a useful reference.

Book Synopsis AIDS Research at EC Level by : Andre E. Baert
Download or read book AIDS Research at EC Level written by Andre E. Baert and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At EC level the fight against AIDS, one of the major health problems and socioeconomic diseases today, is also part of the specific RTD programme in the field of biomedicine and health. About 600 research teams are collaborating within 30 concerted actions networks that are underpinned by centralised facilities. For example, the epidemiology research networks are monitored by the WHO/EC collaborating centre in St. Maurice, France. Common experiments on animal models, antiviral screening, genetic analysis of multiple virus strains and provision of reagents for vaccine development are also centralized facilities in AIDS research carried out under the principles of subsidiarity and Community added value. This publication presents an overview of their ongoing research activities in disease control and prevention, viro-immunological research, clinical research and vaccine development. Covered by Current Contents, Life Sciences (ISI), volume 38, no. 19, May 1995, p. 11-12 'Therefore, for anyone doing AIDS research, this is a must volume to have in order to understand what the European Community is doing in AIDS research. Highly recommended for all medical and academic libraries.' - H. Robert Malinowsky, The University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. AIDS Book Review Journal, no. 27, June 1996

Book Synopsis AIDS up to the Year 2000 by : Scenario Committee on AIDS
Download or read book AIDS up to the Year 2000 written by Scenario Committee on AIDS and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1983 the Secretary of State for Welfare, Health and Cultural Affairs appointed the Steering Committee on Future Health Scenarios (STG). The task of the STG is to advise the Minister on the future of public health and health care in the long term in the Netherlands with a view to increasing the anticipatory capacity of government policy. Since 1983 the STG has set up a number of committees, including the Scenario Committee on AIDS, with a view to mapping out possible scenarios in their particular field of interest. The committees report in the form of scenario reports, which are of relevance not just to the national government but also to others involved in policy development and opinion formation in the field in question. What proportions will the HIV/AIDS epidemic assume and how many new HIV infections can be averted by HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns? How much care and support will people with HIV and AIDS need and what successes can be expected within the care sector? What will be the social consequences of AIDS and how can ostracism and the social isolation of people with HIV and AIDS be avoided? These and other related questions form the subject of this book, which examines the sociocultural and economic impact of AIDS in the Netherlands up to the year 2000. The book presents a study carried out by the Netherlands Institute of Mental Health (NcGv) and the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM), under the direction of the STG Scenario Committee on AIDS. The researchers look back at the epidemiological, sociocultural and economic impact of AIDS in the Netherlands during the first decade of the epidemic and, on the basis of this, use scenario analysis to project the impact of AIDS up to the year 2000. The future projections relate both to the impact of AIDS and the maximization of efforts to combat the disease. In addition to a scenario exploring the impact of AIDS if developments continue unchanged, alternative scenarios are also put forward. These focus on the impact of significant changes in such diverse fields as sexual behaviour, injecting drug use, the effectiveness and organization of HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, and the demand for delivery of care. The book concludes that the impact of AIDS will only become fully apparent in the second decade of the epidemic. The authors consider the implications of this conclusion for HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, research, care and the efforts to counter the socially undesirable impacts of AIDS.
