Book excerpt: This book reviews the current state-of-the art of single layer silicene up to thicker silicon nanosheets, and their structure, properties and potential applications. Silicene is a newly discovered material that is one atomic layer think. It is a two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial that is classified as a nanosheet, which has large lateral dimensions up to micrometres, but thicknesses of only nanometres or less. Silicon nanosheets are currently a very ‘hot’ area of research. The unique properties and morphology of such materials make them ideal for a variety of applications, including electronic devices, batteries and sensors. 2D nanosheets of silicon can be considered as analogues of graphene. As silicon is already the major component of electronic devices, the significance of nanosheets composed of silicon is that they can be more easily integrated into existing electronic devices. Furthermore, if 2D nanostructured Si can be implemented into such devices, then their size could be reduced into the nano-regime, providing unique properties different from bulk Si that is currently employed. The book is written for researchers and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to give a comprehensive review of the theory, fabrication, characterisation, and device applications of abrupt, shallow, and narrow doping profiles in semiconductors. Such doping profiles are a key element in the development of modern semiconductor technology. After an introductory chapter setting out the basic theoretical and experimental concepts involved, the fabrication of abrupt and narrow doping profiles by several different techniques, including epitaxial growth, is discussed. The techniques for characterising doping distributions are then presented, followed by several chapters devoted to the inherent physical properties of narrow doping profiles. The latter part of the book deals with specific devices. The book will be of great interest to graduate students, researchers and engineers in the fields of semiconductor physics and microelectronic engineering.

In particular, nonconventional, unusual or innovative neutron scattering experiments (from both the scientific and the instrumental point of view) are described which either have novel applications or provide a new insight into science and technology. Chapters on theoretical aspects are adequately included. The scientific and technical areas cover the following topics: novel neutron scattering techniques and perspectives in neutron scattering instrumentation (including sample environment); soft condensed matter, particularly colloids and polymers; materials science and industrial applications; structure and dynamics of multilayers and nanocrystalline materials; dynamical aspects and quantum effects in molecular magnets; strongly correlated electron systems, with emphasis on dynamic correlations in low-dimensional magnets. All these topics are thoroughly introduced and discussed by acknowledged experts.

This book was released on 1998-12-30 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and manipulating the properties of materials naturally occurring in our world and artificially produced by modern technologies requires detailed information on their properties on the atomic scale. This information is the basis for any kind of research in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, metallurgy, and ceramics. Among the various experimental methods, neutron and photon scattering have become the key techniques of choice. This book provides an overview of the complementarity between neutron and synchrotron x-ray scattering. The most important topics are covered, including structure determination, magnetic correlations, polymer dynamics, thin films and multilayers, photoemission studies, etc; they are thoroughly introduced and discussed by experts from both the experimental and the theoretical side.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the increased availability of synchrotron sources, surface X-ray scattering is a rapidly expanding technique with important applications to surface structures and surface phase transitions, roughening of surfaces and interfaces, and the structure of liquid surfaces, including polymers, liquid crystals, and organic films. Surface studies with neutrons, on the other hand provide important information on liquid andmagnetic films. The contributions to this volume, written by active researchers in the field, provide an up-to-date overview of the highly sophisticated techniques and their applications.

Neutron, especially together with X-ray scattering techniques have been showing the elegant and tremendous achievements in revealing the static and dynamic structures in the wide range of materials, i.e. alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites, and also biological materials for advanced purposes. With the intention on establishing the techniques due to the availibility of the facilities at neutron scattering laboratory in Indonesia and a light X-ray synchrotron laboratory in Singapore, then the next future works and collaborations, especially in the southeast Asian region will be strengthened and enlightened.

Book excerpt: Neutron Scattering: Applications in Chemistry, Materials Science and Biology, Volume 49, provides an in-depth overview of the applications of neutron scattering in the fields of physics, materials science, chemistry, biology, the earth sciences, and engineering. The book describes the tremendous advances in instrumental, experimental, and computational techniques over the past quarter-century. Examples include the coming-of-age of neutron reflectivity and spin-echo spectroscopy, the advent of brighter accelerator-based neutron facilities and associated techniques in the United States and Japan over the past decade, and current efforts in Europe to develop long-pulse, ultra-intense spallation neutron sources. It acts as a complement to two earlier volumes in the Experimental Methods in the Physical Science series, Neutron Scattering: Fundamentals(Elsevier 2013) and Neutron Scattering: Magnetic and Quantum Phenomena (Elsevier 2015). As a whole, the set enables researchers to identify aspects of their work where neutron scattering techniques might contribute, conceive the important experiments to be done, assess what is required, write a successful proposal for one of the major facilities around the globe, and perform the experiments under the guidance of the appropriate instrument scientist. - Completes a three-volume set, providing extensive coverage on emerging and highly topical applications of neutron scattering - Addresses the increasing use of neutrons by chemists, life scientists, material scientists, and condensed-matter physicists - Presents up-to-date reviews of recent results, enabling readers to identify new opportunities and plan neutron scattering experiments in their own field
