Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 2nd International Joint C- ference on Automated Reasoning (IJCAR 2004) held July 4–8, 2004 in Cork, Ireland. IJCAR 2004 continued the tradition established at the ?rst IJCAR in Siena,Italyin2001,whichbroughttogetherdi?erentresearchcommunitieswo- ing in automated reasoning. The current IJCAR is the fusion of the following conferences: CADE: The International Conference on Automated Deduction, CALCULEMUS: Symposium on the Integration of Symbolic Computation and Mechanized Reasoning, FroCoS: Workshop on Frontiers of Combining Systems, FTP: The International Workshop on First-Order Theorem Proving, and TABLEAUX: The International Conference on Automated Reasoning with Analytic Tableaux and Related Methods. There were 74 research papers submitted to IJCAR as well as 12 system descriptions. After extensive reviewing, 26 research papers and 6 system - scriptions were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in this volume. In addition, this volume also contains papers from the three invited speakers and a description of the CADE ATP system competition. We would like to acknowledge the enormous amount of work put in by the members of the program committee, the various organizing and steering c- mittees, the IJCAR o?cials, the invited speakers, and the additional referees named on the following pages. We would also like to thank Achim Brucker and Barbara Geiser for their help in producing this volume.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Formal Modeling and Analysis of Timed Systems, FORMATS 2009, held in Budapest, Hungary, September 2009. The 18 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 40 submissions. The aim of FORMATS is to promote the study of fundamental and practical aspects of timed systems, and to bring together researchers from different disciplines that share interests in the modelling and analysis of timed systems.Typical topics include (but are not limited to): – Foundations and Semantics. Theoretical foundations of timed systems and languages; comparison between different models (timed automata, timed Petri nets, hybrid automata, timed process algebra, max-plus algebra, probabilistic models). – Methods and Tools. Techniques, algorithms, data structures, and software tools for analyzing timed systems and resolving temporal constraints (scheduling, worst-case execution time analysis, optimization, model checking, testing, constraint solving, etc.). – Applications. Adaptation and specialization of timing technology in application domains in which timing plays an important role (real-time software, hardware circuits, and problems of scheduling in manufacturing and telecommunication).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift was published in honor of Joshua Guttman on the occasion of his 66.66 birthday. The impact of his work is reflected in the 23 contributions enclosed in this volume. Joshua’s most influential and enduring contribution to the field has been the development of the strand space formalism for analyzing cryptographic protocols. It is one of several “symbolic approaches” to security protocol analysis in which the underlying details of cryptographic primitives are abstracted away, allowing a focus on potential flaws in the communication patterns between participants. His attention to the underlying logic of strand spaces has also allowed him to merge domain-specific reasoning about protocols with general purpose, first-order logical theories. The identification of clear principles in a domain paves the way to automated reasoning, and Joshua has been a leader in the development and distribution of several tools for security analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume arose from the need for a comprehensive coverage of the state of the art in security protocol analysis. It aims to serve as an overall course-aid and to provide self-study material for researchers and students in formal methods theory and applications in e-commerce, data analysis and data mining. The volume will also be useful to anyone interested in secure e-commerce. The book is organized in eight chapters covering the main approaches and tools in formal methods for security protocol analysis. It starts with an introductory chapter presenting the fundamentals and background knowledge with respect to formal methods and security protocol analysis. Chapter 2 provides an overview of related work in this area, including basic concepts and terminology. Chapters 3 and 4 show a logical framework and a model checker for analyzing secure transaction protocols. Chapter 5 explains how to deal with uncertainty issues in secure messages, including inconsistent messages and conflicting beliefs in messages. Chapter 6 integrates data mining with security protocol analysis, and Chapter 7 develops a new technique for detecting collusion attack in security protocols. Chapter 8 gives a summary of the chapters and presents a brief discussion of some emerging issues in the field.
