Download or read book Produced Water written by Kenneth Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-18 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art review of scientific knowledge on the environmental risk of ocean discharge of produced water and advances in mitigation technologies. In offshore oil and gas operations, produced water (the water produced with oil or gas from a well) accounts for the largest waste stream (in terms of volume discharged). Its discharge is continuous during oil and gas production and typically increases in volume over the lifetime of an offshore production platform. Produced water discharge as waste into the ocean has become an environmental concern because of its potential contaminant content. Environmental risk assessments of ocean discharge of produced water have yielded different results. For example, several laboratory and field studies have shown that significant acute toxic effects cannot be detected beyond the "point of discharge" due to rapid dilution in the receiving waters. However, there is some preliminary evidence of chronic sub-lethal impacts in biota associated with the discharge of produced water from oil and gas fields within the North Sea. As the composition and concentration of potential produced water contaminants may vary from one geologic formation to another, this conference also highlights the results of recent studies in Atlantic Canada.

Book Synopsis Metamorphosis in Fish by : Sylvie Dufour
Download or read book Metamorphosis in Fish written by Sylvie Dufour and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers current data on the two types of fish metamorphoses and their endocrine controls. It will be of interest for fish biologists as well as comparative physiologists and endocrinologists. Metamorphosis is a major developmental phase characterized by morphological and physiological changes. It prepares organisms for a drastic shift in habitat and behavior. Among vertebrates, besides the well-known larval metamorphosis in amphibians, two types of metamorphosis are also described in the life cycle of some fish species. Larval metamorphosis, also called first metamorphosis or true metamorphosis, is encountered in lampreys, representative species of basal vertebrates as well as in some teleost groups, elopomorphs and pleuronectiforms, and possibly also in some other teleost species. Secondary metamorphosis occurs in juveniles of some diadromic migratory teleosts, such as salmons and eels, and compared to larval metamorphosis, involves less drastic morphological changes.

Download or read book Program of Energy Research and Development at Environment Canada, 2001-2003 written by Program of Energy Research and Development (Canada) and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Program of Energy Research & Development (PERD) is a federal program that focusses specifically on Canadian energy issues and their impact. PERD funds energy research & development interests in 12 departments. Environment Canada is a key player in PERD, leading the delivery of environmental science & technology specific to energy issues. This publication first indicates how Environment Canada's energy research & development activities jointly benefit both departmental & PERD mandates. It then describes the department's involvement in PERD over 2001-03 at the project level by profiling PERD projects in six sectors: oil & gas, transportation, buildings & communities, industry, electricity, and climate change. For each project, information is included on objectives, methodology, goals, outputs, successes, and funding.
