Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing contains accepted papers presented at ICGEC 2015, the 9th International Conference on Genetic and Evolutionary Computing. The conference this year was technically co-sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology, Myanmar, University of Computer Studies, Yangon, University of Miyazaki in Japan, Kaohsiung University of Applied Science in Taiwan, Fujian University of Technology in China and VSB-Technical University of Ostrava. ICGEC 2015 is held from 26-28, August, 2015 in Yangon, Myanmar. Yangon, the most multiethnic and cosmopolitan city in Myanmar, is the main gateway to the country. Despite being the commercial capital of Myanmar, Yangon is a city engulfed by its rich history and culture, an integration of ancient traditions and spiritual heritage. The stunning SHWEDAGON Pagoda is the center piece of Yangon city, which itself is famous for the best British colonial era architecture. Of particular interest in many shops of Bogyoke Aung San Market, and of world renown, are Myanmar’s precious stones-rubies, sapphires and jade. At night time, Chinatown comes alive with its pungent aromas and delicious street food. The conference is intended as an international forum for the researchers and professionals in all areas of genetic and evolutionary computing.

This book focuses on relevant approaches aimed at monitoring and protecting computation and data hosted on heterogeneous computing resources. The most critical security aspects are thoroughly discussed, highlighting the importance of reliable secure computation over remote heterogeneous cloud nodes. This book shows that present cloud computing is inherently insecure therefore advanced execution models have to be developed to prevent unauthorized users from accessing or affecting others' data and computation. The cloud approach enables on-demand scalable services that allow performing large computations without the costs and maintenance/management issues of costly server farms (thus enabling a novel kind of outsourced computing). Essential reading for software and computer engineers as well as data architects and IT professionals to better understand the complexity and heterogeneity of modern cloud- based scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, people living in cities see up to 5000 ads per day, many on public displays. More and more of these public displays are networked and equipped with sensors, making them part of a global infrastructure that is currently emerging. Such displays provide the opportunity to create a benefit for society in the form of immersive experiences and relevant content. In this way, they can overcome the display blindness that evolved over the years. Two main reasons prevent this vision from coming true: first, public displays are stuck with traditional advertising as the driving business model. Second, no common ground exists for researchers or advertisers that outline important challenges. The main contribution of this thesis is presenting a design space for advertising on public displays that identifies important challenges - mainly from an HCI perspective. The results are envisioned to provide a basis for future research and for practitioners to shape future advertisements on public displays in a positive way.

For those seeking a way to change opinions of shared governance from pointless and unlikely to possible and intriguing, Shared Governance in Higher Education, Volume 1 will trigger meaningful conversations by offering valuable new perspectives. Experienced governance members, the contributors provide practical insights for everyone involved in academic governance and illuminate the subtle aspects of governance that make the difference between success or failure. Each chapter takes a different view of governing within institutions of higher education and explores topics such as engaging all stakeholders (including students) in shared governance; building on the benefits of a large, complex system; and bringing together pressing current needs with realistic strategic planning. Several in-depth descriptions of academic challenges, and the many roles of governance in addressing them, are thoughtfully explored. The contributors look both deeply and broadly, moving beyond platitudes. The result is a volume that will appeal to those beginning their terms of service as governance members or transitioning into leadership positions, as well as those looking for ways to assist others via governance symposia or conferences, and that will enable readers to shape their involvement in shared governance in unique new ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercises and Solutions in Statistical Theory helps students and scientists obtain an in-depth understanding of statistical theory by working on and reviewing solutions to interesting and challenging exercises of practical importance. Unlike similar books, this text incorporates many exercises that apply to real-world settings and provides much more thorough solutions. The exercises and selected detailed solutions cover from basic probability theory through to the theory of statistical inference. Many of the exercises deal with important, real-life scenarios in areas such as medicine, epidemiology, actuarial science, social science, engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, environmental health, and sports. Several exercises illustrate the utility of study design strategies, sampling from finite populations, maximum likelihood, asymptotic theory, latent class analysis, conditional inference, regression analysis, generalized linear models, Bayesian analysis, and other statistical topics. The book also contains references to published books and articles that offer more information about the statistical concepts. Designed as a supplement for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses, this text is a valuable source of classroom examples, homework problems, and examination questions. It is also useful for scientists interested in enhancing or refreshing their theoretical statistical skills. The book improves readers’ comprehension of the principles of statistical theory and helps them see how the principles can be used in practice. By mastering the theoretical statistical strategies necessary to solve the exercises, readers will be prepared to successfully study even higher-level statistical theory.

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning Spaces is an emerging field, fuelled by a growing interest in the relationships between learning and spaces in which it takes place, whether conceptual, personal, social, physical and/or virtual. It is concerned with making learning spaces that can better meet the needs of 21st century learners, academics and other related publics. In post-compulsory education this has opened up many interesting and important issues. There remains a lack of any theoretical understanding as to how such spaces should be conceived or designed; and hardly any critical discussion about effective frameworks for either the development of contemporary learning spaces or for assessing their impact on learning, teaching and research. At the same time, there is much debate about what the purposes of post-compulsory education should be, as well as concerns about where and by whom it should be provided. We therefore need to urgently improve our understanding of the interactions between learning and space. It is essential that we not only share perspectives, theories and methodologies but also critically reflect on our own different assumptions, and work together to build better models for post-compulsory education in the future. To help in this process this book is designed as a ‘critical reader’ that can enable researchers, academics, students and managers involved in Learning Spaces to share and engage with some key ideas, issues and texts. A central aim is to bring together some of the best research from across the many different disciplines concerned with learning spaces, including education, architecture, anthropology, human-computer interaction, estate planning and museum studies. Reshaping Learning is thus intended for anyone interested in, and wanting to think more about, learning spaces whether as users, clients or managers; or who are want to better understand interactions between the social and the spatial.
